A founders point of view. Three Days mining then from Startup to dead in 60 sec. This cant be right..

I am founder and from there on in I have dropped in and out of Elite dangerous over the years or as frustration dictates. My curiosity was raised earlier in the year with the announcement of odyssey and I decided I should start playing a bit more.
Other than the usual grind starting to bore me, getting killed two minutes entering a community goal system whilst trying to get to a station by another player, I thought I would try some mining that’s got to be a relatively peaceful and thought provoking past time. So kitted out for mining I have spent three session over three days mining not visiting a station because I want some entertainment not spending half my time looking at hyperspace (I played the original Elite and hyperspace lasted two seconds). Today I started Elite and straight away pirates appear start attacking me and I can’t jump away and end up dead. Now I can deal with these sorts of situations and do not mind the consequences it’s what the game is about. If you are in a combat zone you start far enough away from any adversaries to get prepared and your mind set is as such.. When your mining your mind set is not the same, just give me a minute or two to get orientated and organised what have I cargo have I got what are my resources how is the ship configured before confronting me with an all or nothing situation. All modern combat games have a lead in, you have to get to the area of confrontation etc... to hit me straight in like this within seconds well GIVE ME A CHANCE!

This left me feeling dejected not a feling of having had some entertainment. I have gone from relaxed and happy to my god this has no lead in. So instead of having half an hour’s entertainment I am on here pointing out how Elite Dangerous instantly left me with a bad feeling. Now I am going to go and do something else to try and lift my spirits back up.

The generic pirates that are always spawned when you drop into a ring are just a bad and unrealistic game mechanic. It should be extremely rare that this happens.
Instead it is a boring repetitive mechanical occurrence, that serves no purpose at all, except for being annoying. The pirates only jump in after you just arrived in the ring. What do these automated morons expect? That your hold is filled in 2 seconds? It makes no sense. The way this is implemented only detracts form the experience.

It is the same with these automated pirates that are spawned if you take certain missions. Even if you have a long range jump capable vessel like an upgraded Cutter, a relatively short range jumper like an FDL, or a Corvette can keep up with you, and will keep getting spawned, and spawned, every time you arrive in a system en route to your destination. Clearly you should lose the FDL after the first spawn, but the thing has magical capabilities.

My laser mining ships(Python, Clipper) drop in, kill pirates, then mine in peace.
I was tired of evasive tactics(losing play time), so I just made builds which take care of pirates first.
Basically on Python I mounted OC frags and LR beam in L slots, on Clipper also large OC frags.
Also, I don't mine in HazRes,so I don't encounter hard-to-kill pirate npc's.
Nowadays best resource to "mine" in haz res sites are pirates themselves :)
 
Against NPC pirates, well one could (if one is wealthy enough and has rank) buy something like Cutter. Even with mining rig it can have decent enough weapons and shields to vaporize any greedy npc's with very little risk.
I mine in a clipper because one tap of the boost button puts it out of weapon and scan range of any NPC.

Exactly what I think. If I am in a random location in a ring surley it should take five minutes for anyone to find and get to me. It breaks the illusion..

Seems to me you backed the wrong game.
Now, don't get me wrong, i'm actually glad you did it, too bad it didn't worked for you 😞

As for me, i started 2 years ago and did not had any issues.
Sure, i had a panic moment when i jumped to my first Anarchy system, because you know... the red warning there.... but it went away rather fast
And maybe it made a difference that i did mostly missions and went to mine waaay later, when unlocking the engineers...
 
You could always go further out into the black to do your mining.
That way you won't see any npc ships.
I am 7000ly outside the bubble in my FC spending my time exploring and mostly being first finder of loads of systems. When I find some pristine rings I stop for a while and mine intending to eventually fill up my FC before returning to the bubble and yet I still occasionally get those pesky pirates appearing on the radar. They never do anything and I know it is some sort of glitch or whatnot but it makes me laugh.
 
I hope the devlopers have their eye on this sort of thing for Odessey. These sort of things matter. All the drama should be as a result of the story not the software design. I am sure they have been busy and remain so.

You don't think it's perhaps making a mountain out of a mole-hill?

I mean I get it, it's silly that pirates spawn in a ring when you log in, it's illogical, how would they find you. But it's a minor issue, one you will never have a problem with after doing it once. It's a game.
 
Consider this: The NPC's don't "find" you, they are there when you drop in and you fly into their scan range. This is the scenario I most often encountered when mining even the bubble's fringes. The closer you are to the bubble's center, the more likely there will be pirates out hunting, enough of them so that any ring you drop into will have a few. After all, they got families to feed, too!

I did 26 weeks out in the black and never encountered one pirate, though, so that's an opition, although if you are doing ship-only mining your route back willl be haunted by interdictions, so be prepared.

Hmm, that's awkward.

From a Founder I'd expect to know how the Game mechanics work - and the glaring shortcomings of Open Play in Player Hotspots like CG Systems (?)
I say this because things are like they are since many years now (?)

It's completely normal for NPCs to spawn when parked in an Asteroid Belt Ring or Cluster within considerable range of the bubble and entering or logging back in.
And Hotspots in Open are FFA PvP/GvP, everything goes, no rules.

And if the own Ship isn't considerably Engineered (don't know if that in this case).... it's a truly dangerous Galaxy.
Most Players - spoiled by their G5 Engineering - don't even realize anymore how dangerous.
(Disclaimer : I've lost perfectly good "makeshift" A-Grade but unengineered Ships... since I simply forgot how incredibly weak they are and got cocky lol ... it's an eye-opener and I thoroughly recommend once in a while taking a fully unengineered Ship into a typical Combat Scenario)
 
There are so many little things like this to learn, and re-learn in the game...

I agree fully that the pirates that find you every time you drop into rings is bad game mechanics, and does not really add to the experience. well most of the pirate gameplay leave quite alot to desire. There is no haggle/negotiations going on, you can't even demand stuff from NPC's if you are the pirate, but NPC pirates can tell you drop cargo and do it in an absurd request, drop cargo worth 60 000 credits. how much cargo is that? instead of asking you to drop 10 T of biowaste for example.

So the pirate gameplay is a bit hollow, and even if you are trying to comply with the pirate demands, if you are not fast enough to figure out how much to drop etc, they can still fire at you, while you do nothing, but standing still, no deployed weapons etc, etc. there is no "I yield" button to hit, to signal the pirate that you intend to comply.
So there should be 3 ways to deal with pirates
1. Destroy them, either by yourself or wait for authority to do it for you, but this mean that you have to survive long enough for them to arrive
2. Run away from them, works great if you are in a faster ship, but running away to another system only resets the mechanics for next time you drop in...
3. Comply with giving the cargo, that is not always working... so this can very often turn to either option 1 or 2.




And playing the game on and off for years, you have will have re-learn quite alot of things that have changed over the time, you are the prime target to get hit really, really hard for the Crime and Punishment 2.0... if you haven't already been hit by this. there is a big difference now between a fine and a bounty. A Fine you can always pay off with no problem, if you have a bounty and goes to the station to do the right thing, you receive a free trip to the nearest detention centre that often is 200+ LY from your current location, was super fun when you got this trip in a low jump range ship with no fuel scoop...now atleast you can buy a crappy fuel scoop at the detention centre, took them long enough to add that...


There is a first thing for everything in the game, and all I can give as advice is to be on the lookout and be ready for the unexpected. Flying shieldless was way easier a few years back, now it needs a bit more situational awareness for this.



Also, other players, while mostly a great bunch of people, that prefer to shoot a friendly O7 your way, there are still other players that prefer to shoot at you with weapons. And you can play the game and have hardly seen any hostile players and then one day, you seems to run into hostile players all over the place. So the space is big potential hostile place, and security rating of a system means hardly nothing, so be vigilant if you intend to play in open, then visiting engineers, community goals and founders world is prime hotspots for encountering hostile players, basically any places that will draw lots of players to visit that system, so try to be prepared and more vigilant about player behaviour.
Also note that with engineering and the then the 2.0 update to engineering, the power disparity between a fully engineered combat ship and typical cargo ship build is huge, where the cargo ship can be destroyed in seconds... Do not forget, that NPC ships can also be engineered, and we have no real way to see if another ship have been engineered or not.



So pay attention to what happens, and if it happens once, it is not uncommon for it to happen again, in most cases the game usually indicate and give us a message about these things, but some, like the pirates when dropping into rings todo mining, you have to learn about. And be vigilant when going to places where you are more likely to encounter other players, as it only takes one hostile player to destroy you. So if you do not enjoy being on edge to visit those systems and yet want to see other players, try out the private group Mobius, that is about players sharing the galaxy, without the pew-pew at each others part. or simply go there in solo.


Also a function that have got more attention lately is the possibility to block players that you do not want to play with. So you go to place, and another players decides to destroy you, you can now say thank you (more likely f---off) and block that player, and you will probably never see that player again when you play, so that player got to kill you once and now you are "dead" to him... so those getting blocked alot do not like this function very much, as that limits how many players they can find to destroy.
 
I feel your pain OP. It's a poor mechanic that you can be empty on entry and get immediately scanned, then ignored for the remainder of your mining session. Any pirate worth their salt would wait until you've actually collected something before scanning you and demanding a cut. Add to that poor mechanic the fact that pirates in ships incapable of even making to where you are can drop into your session in unpopulated systems and it's a reminder that the game developers want to ensure no reward comes without some risk of combat. It's amazing pirates haven't started demanding cartographic data.
 
I can appriciate this idea, but rather than avoiding the probem I belive in making the experience of game play better for everyone.

I only made that suggestion about going into the black to do mining because that's what I do.
In unpopulated systems away from the bubble (about 200 ly's) you can easily mine all you want without any problems from NPC pirates. You can even log out whilst in the planetary ring and then log back in again without any NPC's spawning in the system.
The only time you have to worry about pirates is when you enter the bubble again, but by that time you will already be aware of such dangers and be ready for them.
 
Whilst you all offer good advice and thanks for that. From the perspective of games play, entering or leaving a system or rings mid game you have expectations and are probably ready to deal with things. But, to be put in that situation from loading the game without a moment to collect your thoughts is from a game play point of view very unforgiving. Being as I CANT quit the game whilst under attack or a period of time therafter, I should be offered a similar you won’t be attacked for some number of seconds when starting the game. Particulary when I felt I saved the game from what apperead to be a safe place I hadnt seen another ship for over a hour. It just seems like a reasonable expectation and one that can help avoid frustration. I am all for improvements that make playing enjoyable.
The game is called Elite Dangerous, not Elite Knitting Club. It's a game. It's supposed to get your heart beating from time to time. Learn from your experience and what people are telling you.

If you're really worried about getting blown up unexpectedly, do your research about your planned activity first, not afterwards.

Sorry for my heart of stone. You won't get any sympathy from me.

Hmmm! Can they deal with the wing of four (three Vultures and an FDL) that sometimes drop in to check out my cargo hold? I can't see either of those ships lasting one minute.

When I went to the centre (Sag A) to see the black hole there, the first thing I noticed was how busy it was with pirates. They had travelled 26,000LY in their Adders and Cobras. I bet they were gutted when they realised that there was nothing to rob after travelling all that distance with a 15LY jump range.

Dont know about Clipper, or Python but my Cutter with class 8 prismatics can easily deal whatever those ships can offer.
