A Guide to Minor Factions and the Background Sim

Congratulations on the new faction. [up]

Hope you didn't have any important real-life stuff planned for the next few weeks. :D

Is your Elite Diplomatic Corp signature meant to be ironic or something?

Also, in the spirit of bluntness that you brought to the thread, your guide is a little out of date, perhaps you should update it before linking to it on this much more up-to-date source. A few examples: Doesn't mention retreat state at all. Still has war duration listed as 3 days minimum, not 4 as it is now. Says war and civil war have 0 day cooldown, not 1 day as observed and repeatedly mentioned here.

Some more:

War is no longer 15% but 5, CivWar /Election 3% not 5.
20 Ly Expansion was never the limit.
Boom is no longer the blocking state it was and now is not only removed by Conflict.

Please stop being grumpy and help me hammering Brett instead. He must get thousands of PMs and mine must be buried deep in the queue :)

Just adding my 2 pennies worth to the request that the BGS has its own Sub Group.

It would really aid those who play it (which is aplenty I am sure you agree), and is just as important as those subgroups are to all the Explorers, or Engineer'ers or CQC players.

We have one thread, which is running at 300 pages almost, is constantly active and and so some questions are lost in the thread.
It would allow for updates and changes to the understood mechanics to be kept readily available to old and new players.

Appreciated

Jim

As requested :)

+1 virtual rep since I can't rep you again so soon.

Thanks! :)

I was going to go to Jaques with the Christmas Carrier Convoy starting Dec 2, but now im thinking... nah. :D

For the record, it only took us 6 weeks of waiting for our faction. Really fast id say... :)

Something just occurred to me about the effect of restricting faction size by means of having conflict states affect an entire faction to the degree they currently do. There are areas in the map where there are NO alliance or empire factions to be found -- these both have fairly well-defined borders. Unless the game is going to eventually "seed" new factions in some way, the border factions of the Alliance and Empire, even if they are expanding, will eventually be so large that the factions themselves -- both NPC and player -- will fall into an endless state of civil war and war, until the border naturally begins to recede back to its original point.

I think this probably applies to a lesser degree to certain government types as well, but less so since the "independent" bloc contains most government types and is seeded throughout the entire map.

And adding to that, if the BGS is going to seed new factions, then the rule about not being able to make native factions retreat would have to change too, or the whole galaxy would get crowded with unremovable NPC factions.

That is realistic. Governing huge parts of space without federal systems is nearly impossible. So this is a literal overextension.

One could argue if FD could add new factions with allegiance in spheres the PP crowd conquered for their Superpower, but this should be the job of PMFs.

It makes some sense that factions would remain in their home system, as they would be nearly impossible to wipe out. But I would prefer if there was some way that factions could become dislodged. It would be interesting if there were a few "exile" factions that kept getting pushed out of systems, possibly further and further away from their home.

Really, dont want to sound condescending, but this information is neither new or needs to be asked about, because you can read about it everywhere.

<snip>

Read it. Asking "how can i win a civil war" feels a bit .... respectless and insulting.

You failed in not wanting to sound condescending.

If your first response to a question being asked is RTFM, or anything akin to it, you are the embodiment of lack of respect. Delete your response and do something more worthwhile, like pick your nose.

Yes, we should really update our guide, but were waiting to see the 2.2 changes once they have been bedded down.

All further the arguement to get our own Sub group, so we can have an update area, a useful further question and answer area, and an area for those days when we are having a less than 'good day' hahaha ;)

So get your PM's to Brett too folks.

That's mine done.

So you really think that RTFM is somehow a uswless statement? And everyone should spin themselves around in an endless dance of answering the most basic questions.

Thats why FAQs were invented. So that discussions can move forward.

Plus my tone has actually gotten me a free peoofreading od our guide. Thanks for that, folks.

Edit: plus the BGS is neither easy nor fast. It is prett hard to play, and decisions you take come and bite you in the butt months later. Having a handy manual to point newbies to is a good thing.

i suggest, that all of us are not getting deeper into discussing how we discuss things, and discuss instead, e.g. "stay on topic" ;-)

___

i guess, either asking walter to update his OP, or (anybody) writing a new one would be a way to go.

the problem i see is, that, while some of the basics are quite fix over some patches (how to trigger a war? how to win an asset?), and are formulated very well in the OP, other "basics" are more complicated (exampel: a factions influence loss is shared/given to all other factions in relation to their influence), and some things are unknown (full list of faction types, that go into election - or i don't think anybody really knows a formula how trade currently effects influence...)

so, as it is now, this thread is the best place to ask any questions ... and i know from myself that some of my own question sound dumb, if i fail to take something basic into account, which i do sometimes.

RTFM can be a valid answer when there is a FM to R. A condition so far unsatisfied :)

Walter2 tried to start a database with a few of us.
Guilty!! I never found the right way to start to contribute or the time.
Would not the best way to start something like this be to compile a list of simple questions? first, Then start turning it into a database as more questions get answered.
I was going to start going through this tread and start it but...........
I am not volunteering.

Which really just leads back to Sentenza and his bombarding of Brett requesting that the BGS gets it's own SubGroup on the forum to make life easier and questions more visible to all.

I might knock up a "dummies guide" at some point, I should have spare time in a couple nights. Noting such a thing would cut out a lot of speculative things to a degree.

It would basically be:
- How to increase a faction's influence generally
- How to decrease a faction's influence generally
- How to start and win a war
- How to expand
- "Global" active states vs "Local" active states (which are secretly global)
- State A
o How to cause it
o Gameplay effects
o Influence Effects
o Other notes
- State B
....

@Jmanis sounds good.

i was wondering, whether a more "action-based guide" would be helpfull, filling the words ("piracy", "trade") in the tables of MB and the BGS livestream with description. "Bountyhunting" -> cash in bounties.

+1 to the sub forum idea. We have been asking for years! Given that there are so many PMFs the argument for it should now be much stronger.

FD do like the black box idea though, so perhaps the lack of a subforum keeps the mechanics somewhat opaque.
