A Guide to Minor Factions and the Background Sim

Hi guys, came here to give some data about the investment state:

-Lasts for 5 days
-Cooldown (time it shows as recovering): 1 day

After the day of cooldown, an expansion went pending. However, it is not from the same system the investment was active in (we've had some sudden spikes of influence lately and we have a few systems over 75% today). So this means I was wrong, and an investment doesn't force an expansion from the same system. Now I need someone to test what happens if there's no system above 75% when the investment ends.

Expansions originate from the first system to reach 75% that can successfully expand, unfortunately the range bonus will be used up by next expansion
Had a few investment states before,
Investment -> Expansion from same system - successful expansion with range bonus (not sure what max range is, faction in Alliance system near maia expanded over 40ly i think)
Investment -> Expansion from different system with targets within 20ly -> Expansion from original investment system - failed Expansion and Investment starts
Investment -> Conflict -> Expansion from original investment system - you get a range bonus

Was there a pending period for the Investment state?

1. boom state is a faction wide state, so it will show boom and have its effects in all system. quickest way to end a boom is by getting the faction into a conflict (war/civil war/election) or expansion/investment/retreat - those states will break boom. alternatively you can trade out the boom bucket, assumption is by selling at the factions markets.

2. generally speaking selling with profit raises infuence. but buying creates more "actions" in the system additionally to that, so you might be able to move the influence further by doing both.

Thank you for confirming re Boom. I do want to start a Civil War, but thought I had to end the Boom first (or wait for it to end), but good to know CW/War overrides the Boom.

You don't really need to end Boom, almost any other state will interrupt it, and why would you? It raises some of the hidden quality of life variables for the system and improves trade, missions and outfitting while it lasts.

In earlier BGS versions ending Boom was a good thing because it blocked Expansion but no longer.

Ditto. Thank you. I think I was recalling a much early game play.

It was suspected (it seems to be in the expansion family of states) We've never let one run long enough in a pending state to find out.

I had evidence that showed a 1-day lockdown by a faction I was watching and noticed it was followed by retreat
When we got put into lockdown, I used a little backwater where we are present on a low inf and put us in retreat. Worked a treat.[yesnod]

Does anyone know how long 'Investment' states last, and if there is a way to bring them to a close quickly.

Without going into details, my chosen fraction will not expand nor will investments work. They have just become blocker states than allow other fraction to grow whilst my chosen fraction loses ground due to this state?

you can break investment with any conflict state.

as for duration - not sure, soething between 5 ticks and 7 ticks.

Ta. THen it will break soon. It has allowed another fraction of the same type to rapidly draw level with us in one of the systems we are in due to them being in Boom and us being shafted by 'Investment'.

It is a shame expansion and Investment states don't automatically stop when they become impossible.

It won't do this without help from someone. Left alone, an expansion or investment will lose about 2% per day.

Hmmm. We live in a very secluded area. There does not seem to be other player activity outside of our group. However we are very active in the small number of systems our fraction is present in.

Interestingly there is no sign of a pending election...

Instead we have Pending Boom, Famine, Civil Unrest and Lockdown. Nice.

EDIT: I'm Assuming all these bad states are because the Investment state has meant we have had next to no missions for about a a week.

Civil Unrest and Lockdown can be caused by a number of factors but they all require player input. Some missions will increase the chance of Civil Unrest or Lockdown for the target faction. Delivering some types of passenger can increase the chance of Civil Unrest or Lockdown. Killing clean ships (murder) belonging to a faction will rapidly cause both Civil Unrest and Lockdown and doesn't require many kills. Selling illegal goods and gaining fines can also cause these states.

Famine can be caused by some missions but lack of player activity also seems to be a cause.

Quicky for you, Does handing in Exploration data in a war state make any difference? and if so does it help the station owners, or the controlling faction? :)

Anyone know what the mechanics for Capital Ship appearances are?
Can players influence when and where Capital Ships appear?

The system I am working in just saw a 13%P gain (without any apparent changes to any other systems) by one of the bad factions and a Capital Ship appeared and this was outside the bubble.
I am starting to feel like there are shenanigans afoot.

It may take a little longer, but I *will* take this system.
