a mad idea: remove chaff from the game

I don’t use chaff on the challenger because there is a viable counter to it right now...simply deselect target and use yer gimbals like fixed...problem sorted.

I do use it on the cutter simply cos I got more utility slots and also because in open, the only other players I need worry about are those using fixed and most use gimbals which means one needn’t worry too much about them so long as ye have chaff.

Removing the chaff entirely would mean a balance pass on combat as a whole. Chaff serves a purpose and quite frankly, if yer having issues countering it, then ye really should try using fixed as chaff won’t affect fixed at all. The use of gimbals is a compromise with chaff being the consequence...so no I disagree and ask why fix something that isn’t broken?

Deselect targets that drop chaff and fire as fixed, once the chaff's gone reselect and use gimbals. Best of both worlds.

Keep in mind that, like turreted weapons, gimbals can be forward locked. So if chaff is an issue or if you want to snipe from a long distance, just toggle them over to forward fire. It at least gives you the option to play with either mode at a marginal DPS loss. I quite like that flexibility.

And on that note, chaff adds an additional mechanic, so I wouldn't advise removing them. It would make combat more linear and boring. Plus it can be used for confetti to celebrate something in-game, along with the flak cannon :)

the gimballs are useless at the moment imo

I guess you're playing kb+m?

edit: Nevermind, misinterpreted the op.

However, I don't agree. Chaff is fine imo. Take it away and everyone will fill the empty utility slots with more shield boosters...

Yeah, I know the "trick" with deselecting targets. Frankly I don't bother anymore (gimballed multis) 'couse it conflicts with aiming my rails as you would have to aim at two different places at the same time for both of those type of weapons to hit.
Lets stay on topic, chaff being annoying. And making no sense for the future targeting technology ;)

Small change that changes everything combat related.

Good? Bad?
Go ahead, post your thoughts.

Quite mad. Tooo easy already. Its not small if it changes everything combat related.

Perhaps learn to fly with FA off (even a little) and all fixed weapons are much easier to aim.

Seems people are suspecting me to be some salty dude that hasn't git gut yet.
Hardly.

Let me reverse that suspition for the lols:
"what's the matter? Afraid that some noob will blast you in his turreted noobconda when your chaff will be taken away?"

No chaff. Really? So wanting to reenforce a meta thats accesible to everyone so noone actaully has to put in any work or get better?

I'm sorry but they are a needed mechanic.

In this Cmdr's opinion (Mostly PvP based) , It's already pretty unbalanced, IE: some of the skill based weapons being sh**tier than the fire and forget ones. But to have a Meta that revolves essentially around easy mode is utter tripe.

The meta, should there be one, should ALWAYS revolve around a skill based weapon or item. Make people put in the time and effort to get the most out of thier ships.

Might I add, by your logic, I also prepose we remove ALL tracking weapons of any kind including seekers or torps.

Chaff isn't annoying, it can just add a bit of a challenge/advantage depending on your loadout.

I'm currently using rails and plasma chargers with no problems. As rails have to charge to fire you've got time to change your point of aim while that happens.

Nooooo I like chaff, it wastes one or even two slots that could be used for boosters and is completely ineffective against my Chiefs fixed beams and tbh my Corvettes gimbaled beams when I deselect.

Chaff is a big win for my TTK.

Rather than removing chaff, can we just rename them to "flares", since our senors are based on heat, flares are what they are, and the idea of space-chaff is inherently nonsense because radar doesn't work in space?

One thing I always wondered :
Unlike real life, our heat-based (IR) Sensors and Weapons have zero issues when this occurs against adverse background - like a bright Sun.

In my books, both Sensor resolution and accuracy of Gimbals and Turrets would be adversely affected by aiming at a Target that has a hot Sun right behind it. Or a very hot Planet surface for that matter.

That would be really cool. And make Nav Beacon and hot-planetside combat/smuggling/whatever a lot more interesting.

I would depend the efficience of chaff on the type of sensor a ship has installed. A-class sensors are heavy and powerhungry, but should reduce the effect of chaff on your weapons. That way it would be players own choice if he sacrifys jumprange and speed for better weapon focus.

+1. I would go even further. Remove all target malfunction/disruption/confusion from the game. [hehe]

I think it would be way more interesting to remove shields from the game! Now that would be interesting indeed!
