A One Ship Commander

Kind of a challenge I'm thinking of to.

I have always played with a rather low number of ships (max of 3-4 ships). Never bought Large ship except for the T9 when I helped for the last IIs.

I actually own a fully engineered Sidey that I use for hacking installations and exploration (went to Colonia with a decent 32 ly jump rang with SRV), a Krait Phantom that I use for mining, cargo mission and exploration and a Mamba for combat.

Krait Phantom would definitely be my choice for a one shi only challenge.

There is a certain appeal to this "one ship at a time" playstyle. It would be quite the feeling to pick one ship and completely sell off everything else.

If I had to choose one ship today to play this way I'd pick the Krait Phantom. Good internal space, decent combat chops, able to explore or trade or mine or fight with decent capability in all of them.

But then that versatility might be the reason NOT to pick the Krait Phantom too? The entire point of the one ship approach is to add challenge to the game, to provide restrictions which make choices more meaningful.

Flying something like a Keelback or a Cobra IV might be a lot more fun simply due to the fact they AREN'T the best at anything. Picking a limited ship as your one and only would add some real challenges to playing and require constant decision making.

Makes me think about Isinona and how he takes even the smallest of ships and turns playing them into incredible experiences. He never makes much money and he often loses fights, but if you have fun like that does losing even matter?

...Keelback or a Cobra IV...

I still don't really understand the Keelback - slower, less manoeuvrable than the T6, yet purporting to be a 'Q-ship' - did the two design goals get swapped over? It doesn't help that I'm not a big fan of the SLF, so for me there's nowt to recommend it - excepting that it does sound epic - to my ears it has one of the best 'soundtracks'.

The Cobra IV does make sense to me, but only if I think of it as a mini-Python and not an evolution of the Cobra III. Comparing the III to the IV is a little like comparing a Porsche Cayenne with a Renault Espace.

If I went with one ship, it would have to be the Krait Mk II. It can do everything well, and you can have an SLF too.

But I like varitety, I get bored with being in the same ship all the time.

This is my current conundrum.

I love the idea of one ship - my ship - but I cannot find one to settle on.

Krait Phantom is what I am leaning towards, but struggling to make peace with the interior and cockpit.

Would love an iClipper but large cuts out a lot, plus that weapon convergence is dire.

I love the cockpit feel of my python, but the trade off of nearly 100ms boost speed against the krait hurts.

If I recall correctly, this was the way Elite (1984) and all other versions of that era were originally designed.

You got one ship and had to trade up with credits to a more capable ship.

So, what the OP suggests is more in line with returning to "Elite's" roots.

I would vote on a "One Ship Commander" provided I could keep a ship of my choice from my shipyard, plus all my engineered modules which fit that ship.

o7....

Yes, that's right. In FE2 you could have but one ship at a time, and my go to (after staring out in the Sidewinder) was the Cobra MkIII. I found it to be the most capable ship for playing that particular game, large enough to fit most of the modules and weapons I needed, including passenger cabins to pick up those lucrative passengers with hit men on their tail, and with a good enough jump distance (with military drives) to make getting to missions in time (that was also a thing then) possible. That said, the older games were like ED was in the beginning. You couldn't outfit a ship perfectly, or optimally because there wasn't space, you always had to make trade offs, something that's almost never necessary now in ED.

As others have suggested, if I had another CMDR slot, I'd certainly consider playing that way for a while, but I'm certainly not in the market to buy another copy of the game, nor discard my five years of progress. :)

This game is much longer playing than those earlier games too (I would generally play FE2 for about a year at a time, then take a break for a year and then start a new game), and for me at least one of the motivating features in ED is building and then engineering ships for specific purposes, and switching between them to mix things up a bit, and to add challenge by using smaller less powerful ships to do things that medium ships could do with relative ease.

Thoughts?
When I started playing ED (v1.3/v1.4), I originally thought that the Asp Explorer would be the ship I would aim for and exclusively fly BUT now, I feel that the most appropriate ship for such a goal would be the Krait Mk II.

It can land anywhere, has a decent base jump range, can be used for multi-crew, has SLF capability, and has a base turn of speed that is fairly decent. Adaptable, dynamic, and tough enough to fight out with the big 3.

If you're gonna' run one-ship, make it a Cobra Mk III.
I pretty much skipped this ship during my PS4 days, mainly because I didn't like the [lack of] sense of scale of this ship on a small monitor, but that means it feels fresh and new to me on PC VR. This is one of the things I find compelling about it.

I also much prefer small ships over medium and large for similar reasons, though once we have space legs and NPC crew, this may change.

@OP: I know you already said that you won't use it, but IMO if I was relegated to one ship and one ship only it would be my Python. I have few ships, but this and my Corvettes are my favorites.

I would go with the Python though, because while it's not a expert at any one thing, it does a pretty decent job of taking on multiple roles. YMMV. :)

I have cough*several*cough accounts, and have opted to try this on one of them.

This is perhaps, the most ideal choice - its a solid all rounder and ticks all the nostalgia buttons.

That said, I decided instead to use perhaps the most reviled ship in the game...

...the Asp Scout.

Yeah. I don't know why, either!

Haven't done much with it yet - earned enough to buy it whilst still in the Newbie Permit Locked Zone, and have only done some light haulage and high res bounty grabbing for the Reorte CG so far.

Asp Scout is actually good though.

Better than a Mk IV for sure.

The Cobra Mk III is my go to open gameplay ship. The Cobra is a whole lot of fun & good enough at just about everything. Plus, if I lose my Cobra Mk III in open, no sweat, since a Cobra Mk III rebuy is relatively inexpensive.

Except you won't die in Open with a Cobra because:

A) Gankers will ignore you the moment a a high volume trade ship appears.
B) The Cobra is actually able to evade things.
