A One Ship Commander

I've always kept the Cobra. I've A-rated and fully engineered it and fitted an SRV and corrosive cargo rack. I now make excuses to fly it as often as possible. It's great for surface missions.

I've done something like it before, moved my entire fleet to the Witch head nebula and stuck with a Cobra MK3 (after playing with the Freewinder until I got enough funds).

It was fun for a while, but when you started to A rate everything and finish engineering it, I got a little bored of it. So I shipped my fleet back and got bored of that (again) after a short while - the reason I did the above in the first place (I had over 20 ships each for a specific purpose).

Then I decided to only have a small fleet, and switch roles around. The current result is in my Inara profile.

I have since bought and sold ships, with the self imposed rule of not going over a fleet of 10 (ideally around 5 but it's difficult - I do like variety).

Cobra 3 will always feature in it, but I also love the Courier - so much fun to fly and 100% gank proof while still combat and prospecting capable. Boosts to 810 and can defeat NPC pirate lords.

I might reduce my fleet to 2 or 3 ships again in the future, the 2 above and maybe the Corvette, Krait or Python would be a good combination.

What about a one loadout commander?
That would be a Cobra Mk IV (no contest) if you are restricting yourself to S ships.

If you are willing to include M size vessels either the Python or one of the Kraits would be the easy answer.

At L size - I would go with the Anaconda, again no contest.

I made an alt who is a single ship Cmdr. It changes a quite a few things - no impetus to earn loads of credits and no need to care much about collecting loads of mats/data, but less flexibility for mission options or ability to impact the BGS.

I used an iCourier exclusively for years. Now I sometimes use a iClipper instead. I can solo both for extended periods. If there was a medium imperial ship I'd probably use only that one. The funny thing is that I'm a Fed all the way.

I do have a billion credits worth of other ships, but I use them for hangar flair only.

If they ever decide in their infinite generosity to give PC players an additional character slot so we can make a second commander without actually buying another copy of the game (you know, like console players can...)

Due to the fact that console players need to pay an extra subscription amount for each account (or you get solo only play) I doubt many console players have a second CMDR.

I use my courier for sneaky planetary activities. Midnight black with red thrusters is cool

Well I tried the Cobra for awhile, but the same things I didn't like on PS4 continue to bother me even in VR. And since VR is the name of my game these days, I keep coming back to two ships that I really, really enjoy flying - the Eagle and the Type-7.

So I'm thinking of being a "two car family" - my little sports car / roadster RX-Eagle, and my minivan T7. I actually do better in combat with my Eagle than I do in the Cobra, and it can run most missions and has a decent jump range for exploring. The T7 is my cargo runner of choice; being limited to large pads is rarely a problem for me. The T7 is also a favorite deep-space long-duration exploration ship.

Neither of these ships are king at what they do, but they are king at making those things fun IMO. I think these are the two ships I'll be flying most often for now on, at least until space legs and NPC crew. Obviously I won't be doing Elite pirate assassination missions or killing Thargoids, but I did enough of that on PS4. On the other hand, I'd happily wing up with anyone who would like having a nippy Eagle pilot assist them in these things :D

I play almost exclusively in solo, so I imagine that actually quite a few console commanders who do the same do in fact have a second commander.

This is wrong. On PS4, we can have multiple accounts for free. I have two CMDRs on PS4, no extra charge at all, so it's actually BETTER on console.

Hmmm they didn't let my son play without a PS plus account and I have one.... I guess that could have changed in the past two years.

Or indeed that lol.

I'm basing my knowledge of what players can and can't do on consoles on previous forum posts about the issue by the way, since if I was on console I'd be playing my second account instead of having a grumble about it on here ;)

Nope, only one account need to pay the subs and designate "home console" for that account. Then you can make more accounts and all benefit from that subscription.

If things were the way that they were when this game first came out and you could only have one ship, I would be in the FDL as I like PvP.
So while I am glad that I can have other ships, it would be quite the trade off to be stuck in that when trying to do ANYTHING else.

This post appears to say that PS players must pay a subscription* of some sort to access multiple accounts. Is this true, or is it just buy ED (H optional), and be done.

*The subscription might be to/for Sony/PS4 for services on the platform, but its still an 'extra' fee if that's the case.

PC players would regard this as 'extra' as we have no subscription fee's at all.

I wish more people had the sack to do that when they're wrong about something.

True enough, but I'm wondering if @N0va McCool is wrong on this occasion, see above.

I have no axe to grind either way, I'm just confused about the PS4 situation. There seems to be contradictory advice in this thread so far - though that could just be the Glayva - and I'm seeking clarity.

As far as I know any online gaming on consoles requires a single subscription to the console's services. That's not a cost specific to Elite, if you game online on a console you'll already be paying it regardless of whether you own and play Elite or not. There's no additional cost to create multiple Elite accounts over and above that cost, which is not directly linked to the game.

As I said though, that's my understanding; I don't own a PS4 so happy to be proved wrong if that's the case.

Also repped for Glayva, haven't had that in years. Naughty stuff.

I sometimes wonder what it would be like to own just a single ship and embrace all the challenges that offers. In particular, I'm thinking about the venerable Cobra III, the "Jack of all trades" small ship. I wasn't that much of a fan of the Cobra in 2D, but in VR it does have a certain feel to it that I like. It feels like a ship I could bound with, like the Serenity or Millennium Falcon.

That's one of the reasons the single-ship experience attracts me, as there is something to the "a pilot and his ship" (singular) theme that is lost when we have an entire fleet of ships at our disposal, allowing us to do anything and everything well. And that's the other attraction - adding challenge back into the game. When you own a fleet of ships, you can pick the ship that makes any job super easy. If you only own one ship (especially if its a small ship like the Cobra), then everything becomes more challenging, which in turn makes things more rewarding, at least from a satisfaction standpoint. While I might not make top 10% at a CG hauling cargo in a Cobra, making 50% would feel like a true accomplishment. I experienced this when I hit 25% at the last bounty hunting CG using a humble Eagle.

I know some of you play this way, and I'd like to hear your experiences and overall feelings on the matter. I wouldn't sell my all of my current (very modest) fleet, but I could see putting the harder-to-get ships (discount T9 and Corvette) into storage in some remote location and just choosing to fly a single ship for a season. I'm still a bit mixed on how I feel about this. Thoughts?

You have inspired me to take my FDL to Colonia.
Has anyone stripped an FDL down to the bone, what's the max jump range ?
