A One Ship Commander

I'm very surprised no one has said they'd use the Anaconda yet. It's one of the most versatile ships in the game and can do anything and everything well. Personally I hate flying it but I know many pilots who think it's the best ship in the game.
Those people need to work out the external camera suite, FAST! I can't bear looking at it, god ship or otherwise.

DISCLAIMER: I plan to take an Eagle out exploring p.soon. This is just me throwing numbers around.

Small ships are generally only good if they're fun for you, or if they're a DBX. Even then, IIRC smaller ships and drives take WAY more damage from wear+tear/neutron jumping - if you plan to use neutron boosts at all, let alone for neutron-highway shenanigans, you should probably look at a good Medium.
The iCourier, DBS and DBX are the only Small ships I'd ever consider 'seriously' exploring in, i.e. getting to Beagle Point for an event or something (and even then, the first two pale in comparison to the latter).

Exploring in an Eagle is quite hardcore, but i guess doable if keeping in the inner 3/4 of the Galaxy.
Saying that because on my alt account, i could not plot a route to Crystaline Shards Systems (Hip 36601) using a 36ly non-engineered DBX.

My small ship preferences would be DBX, Dolphin, Cobra Mk3, Viper Mk4 and last iCourier. And before an Eagle, i would put a Hauler.
While Viper Mk4 and iCourier have roughly the same jump range (about 48ly) i kinda dislike the view from the iCourier cockpit which is kinda crazy because i find the Dolpin's view quite obscured as well..

I guess that with HIP ist more a problem of the permit locked col systems and not one of jumprange though...

I dunno, I'm trying to get there in a 30ly Keelback (not my Asp Scout CMDR ;)) and having managed to Neutron Boost beyond the Col 70 permit wall, I'm having real trouble closing that last 300ly!

Could be, but i never been there in a ship with less than 50ly jump range and also i noticed that stars are pretty rare in that region.

I normally have a favorite ship that I use for almost anything, but it changes from time to time. The Mamba is on top of my list, even though I normally don't use it for combat. I did Sag A* in a Mamba, and apart from the somewhat limited jump range (~40 ly), it's a magnificent explorer.

Currently I mainly fly:

Python: Core mining
FDL: Practicing fixed weapons
ASPx: Exploring/exploding
Vulture: "Little Walter" style fighting
Corvette: Bounty hunting and mat scavenging
Mamba: It's just the most pleasurable and exhilarating ship to fly in the game. Far from perfect, but way more exciting than all the rest combined.

Lately I've been thinking about building a ship to go to Colonia and see what life is like there. Then I would leave the rest of my ships at Jameson, so it would have to be something really allround, like a Python. Properly outfitted that ship will do anything. I would miss the Mamba though, so I would probably have it emailed to Colonia, but that ship and a Python would actually do the job ;)
I love my Mamba too, it's like the F1 of spaceships. I have a FDL but just to say I have one. That offset pilots chair with the bar in your line of view blows it for me.

I think I will have my alt go sidey->cobra 3->Krait Phantom and the Krait will be the "one final ship".

Since I did my soft reset, i have been almost exclusively flying the krait phantom (only like 2 or so outings in my challenger). I literally built it to be like the millennium falcon. I think it has made a lot of things more fun, to the point were I am strongly considering trimming my fleet down to the phantom and my corvette.
I sometimes wonder what it would be like to own just a single ship and embrace all the challenges that offers. In particular, I'm thinking about the venerable Cobra III, the "Jack of all trades" small ship. I wasn't that much of a fan of the Cobra in 2D, but in VR it does have a certain feel to it that I like. It feels like a ship I could bound with, like the Serenity or Millennium Falcon.

That's one of the reasons the single-ship experience attracts me, as there is something to the "a pilot and his ship" (singular) theme that is lost when we have an entire fleet of ships at our disposal, allowing us to do anything and everything well. And that's the other attraction - adding challenge back into the game. When you own a fleet of ships, you can pick the ship that makes any job super easy. If you only own one ship (especially if its a small ship like the Cobra), then everything becomes more challenging, which in turn makes things more rewarding, at least from a satisfaction standpoint. While I might not make top 10% at a CG hauling cargo in a Cobra, making 50% would feel like a true accomplishment. I experienced this when I hit 25% at the last bounty hunting CG using a humble Eagle.

I know some of you play this way, and I'd like to hear your experiences and overall feelings on the matter. I wouldn't sell my all of my current (very modest) fleet, but I could see putting the harder-to-get ships (discount T9 and Corvette) into storage in some remote location and just choosing to fly a single ship for a season. I'm still a bit mixed on how I feel about this. Thoughts?

I'm a clipper girl, fit it with 7c bi weaves and beams for combat, swap in a 6A fuel scoop and I can do long distance passenger missions very quickly. Take out the 6A and add cargo and it becomes a trader. I don't mind that it can't land at outposts. There is plenty to do without needing outposts. Did a 4 million passenger run earlier and it didn't take long at all. I keep my courier for love of the courier but with the clipper, I don't need it, just can't part with it.

interesting your 'more challenge more reward' view..i would agree but the truth of my game is that is too glitched to enjoy most the times, the truth would be me putting that extra effort with as much passion as you like i have in the past, and getting not that much extra reward or feeling of acomplishment, but extra sed off because all my efforts are made irrelevant by some bug\glitch witch may very well add rp\cash\pride loss and it certainly wont be in the responsability area of fdev... i can tell you as an opinion if the game actually worked that would be an appealing way of playing (roleplay) for many myself included! (think idd go with the dolphin because i love the passenger transport vibe)

Always fly a Cobra, been to Guardian and Thargoid sites, done some engineering. Frustrations are limited cargo hold, limited jump range, limited...

I don't see that many players in Pythons these days like I used to, but it's apparently still loved by many. Is this because people "burned out" on the Python in the early days and are now enjoying a different experience in ships like the Krait?

I skipped the Python during my PS4 playthrough, but if it's good in VR, I might consider it. Someday I'll have to take one for a test drive.

The Krait does seem to have taken over from the Python in many player's affections. I still prefer the Python, the Krait is more nimble but the Python has better internals with its extra class 6 slot and the internals are more important to me. I know you're not a particular fan of large scale engineering but any sluggishness in handling compared to the Krait can be compensated for more than adequately with some dirty drives. I like the cockpit/bridge on the Python, it's functional but tidy. Can't comment on the VR experience though.

The Conda I flew wasn't cheating. I purposefully used undersized thrusters and other "cheap" components, making it feel appropriately balanced and challenging for a ship its size. Nor was it G5 engineered, the ultimate in "cheating" IMO.

Someday when we get space legs, NPC crew, and the ability to customize ship interiors like we can exteriors (I want a NEW bridge, not this junkyard filthy bridge), the Anaconda could easily become a favorite ship of mine once again.
All credit to you for seeing the issues and dealing with them to allow you to fly the ship as it probably should be (so many don't), my mate has one and feels guilty for Engineering it, but with all the heavweight stuff on board his one is more balanced than many (my clipper looks better when we park up though)

I have a second cmdr that I'm playing in 'ironman' mode.
So recently had been flying in just a lowly sidewinder. Trying to see how much could be achieved.
Found problems with load out. Had to keep swapping modules to do jobs.
Also with just two small hard points, killing anything took ages. (I'm not all that good with fixed weapons).
But generally, there wasn't much I couldn't do.
Got killed by a cmdr at a CG, so had to start again.
Even more recently, upgraded to an Eagle, but tried out the combat zone in the starter system and got killed by npc.
I think maybe the OP's idea of a cobra is the best bet, bigger guns and space to carry stuff.
Was a lot of fun in the sidey all the same. You don't care if you lose it.

If not "just" one ship, maybe at least just "one ship at a time".
Yes this tends to be the way I do things.
I have lots of ships, but only fly one and upgrade it, use it, do as much as possible with it. At some point I'll save enough to get something else then work on upgrading that.
I usually go for multi-purpose builds, can do a bit of everything in any ship I have.

I’ve always been a single ship pilot. I flew a Cobra III for the first two years of the game. I’m now in a Krait Mk 2. I think this ship feels just right. It can do everything including a SLF so allows exploration of all aspects of the game. I have 3 of them, all configured for different roles. I find this just makes it easier to switch load outs.

I did break down and get an Asp for mining. So that’s my other ship buts it’s tailors just for that role and is perfect for it.

I just find that managing a whole fleet is annoying.

This is exactly how I prefer to use engineering - to compensate for weaknesses. I'm a huge realism nut, within reason of course. This means I don't want a large ship whipping around like a small fighter, but I also don't like my high power beam laser having a ridiculously short falloff damage range in the vacuum of space, so I'll engineer to compensate for the latter. I'll also engineer to compensate for using weaker (and thus lighter and cheaper) modules, like D class thrusters instead of A. This helps me compensate for the very low jump range on some ships. Ideally when I'm done engineering a ship, it is "good" all around without being OP.

The canopy struts in front and above the Pythons pilot seat kill that ship for me
I owned the Python for less than 24 hours on my 2+ year old PS4 account. I didn't like it for a multitude of reasons, your reason included. But now, in VR, it has one of the coolest bridges IMO. The canopy framing is not in the way, and it gives a nice sense of depth perspective that really sets apart the ship from the backdrop.

So yesterday I bought a Python, emptying my bank account in the process (sold a couple of other ships including my beloved Vulture to do this), I'm now using it to farm the materials needed to improve it as described above. I don't know if this will be "the" ship, but it has potential! I'll always keep my Eagle, because nothing is as fun as dogfighting in an Eagle in VR, but the Python may become my mainstay mission-running, Bubble exploring, material gathering ship. I guess only time will tell!

I have at least one of every ship we can currently buy and while the Anaconda is a nice craft but it is far from being perfect nor the best ship in the game (IMO). In the context of this thread (restricting yourself to one ship), the L pad requirement pushes it out of the running (IMO) because there are places it would not be able to dock/land for trading/missions/bounties/etc.
