A One Ship Commander

My Alt is a one ship fleet and if it had to be 1 ship exclusively, it would be the keelback i know it is not a fantastic combat ship but i like how it flys, i l ike the versatility, if i could get a small pad version (and not lose the big brick feel of it) id be stoked

If only the Keelback weren't worse in nearly all accounts than the T6. It has those looks, similar to the FDS, you just want to find a role for it.

Yeah looks are definitely a factor i have a low heat DBS for a smuggling rig for my main but i just can't get excited by it (it does tha tg job very well it just doesn't "look" like a smugglers boat to me)

Myself I just roll with that fact, rather than feverishly insist "I'm teh bestest."

I play D&D/SP RPGs the same way. Not meta, but an interesting character. Flaws actually make it fun.

I like the 'this is what ive got to work with' feel of the vanilla ships i resist the urge to engineer most of the ships i fly, for me working within their limitations is what makes the game interesting

I am flying a "@Bigmaec-outfit"-Phantom back to Colonia right now. This thing feels great: good shields, good jumprange, a good feel to explore the long way with it.

But....I would start by making a checklist: what are musthaves?

1. Small, medium, large
2. Multicrew?
3. Jumprange
4. Slots
5. Fighter Bay
6. Speed

For my trip now, Multicrew is a must, because of getting some squad-members the ability to visit me far out.
Jumprange: a ship must jump more than 40, better 45 LJ.
Speed: small ships with enhanced Thrusters: I love the fast Adder.
SLF: I managed to get a Trident Fighter the last week: makes any ship a great ship.
Slots: the iCourier has many slots, can jump far, is fast as hell, but has no multicrew. No SLF either.

Just did the Blue Juice Highway run out to Colonia, Neutron Highway shaved off heaps of jumps, and paint, the wear and tear on the FSD added up pretty quickly the first time I have used the AFMU in my ship (FSD module integrity dropped below 75% twice) hearing Alix say "frameship malfunction" when you are in the jump tunnel makes the old ring gear tighten up!

If I dropped to a single ship it would probably be the Keelback. So much personality
This might be one reason why I'm not destined to become a one ship commander. I used to love the Keelback, but after spending a lot if time in it, certain flaws started to get on my nerves. I'm not talking gameplay issues, but aesthetics and immersion issues (stupid twitchy useless non-VTOL side thrusters). Before the Keelback, the DBX was my favorite ship. Same thing happened with it. Now I don't own either and probably never will again.

Maybe I'm just a spaceship gigolo 🤷

I'm very surprised no one has said they'd use the Anaconda yet. It's one of the most versatile ships in the game and can do anything and everything well. Personally I hate flying it but I know many pilots who think it's the best ship in the game.

I used to fly a Conda on PS4, but those wires hanging out of the ceiling got on my nerves. What Frontier should have done was have those wires fall out of the ceiling as the ship took damage (being the only ship with a damage model). :D

See above for my howler :D
It's a cheat ship... if you need an Anni you need stabiliser wheels too

'Cheat ship' is a bit harsh but yeah it's definitely easy mode. Same reason that despite me having spent probably 75% or more of my non-exploration time in a Python, I wouldn't use one for a single ship commander precisely because it doesn't impose any real limitations, which would be the attractive gameplay aspect of deliberately limiting myself to a single ship.

You do realise that you can't fly an Anaconda without flying several other ships first?

I once started making a list of all the things I've seen described as cheating in ED. I realised it was going to leave hardly anything to do.

The Conda I flew wasn't cheating. I purposefully used undersized thrusters and other "cheap" components, making it feel appropriately balanced and challenging for a ship its size. Nor was it G5 engineered, the ultimate in "cheating" IMO.

Someday when we get space legs, NPC crew, and the ability to customize ship interiors like we can exteriors (I want a NEW bridge, not this junkyard filthy bridge), the Anaconda could easily become a favorite ship of mine once again.

Well two to be exact and one of them is the starting Sidewinder. A stock Anaconda costs about 140m credits, less at a discount station. As soon as you can afford either a Cobra Mk3 or an Asp, you can make that in an afternoon these days.

I normally have a favorite ship that I use for almost anything, but it changes from time to time. The Mamba is on top of my list, even though I normally don't use it for combat. I did Sag A* in a Mamba, and apart from the somewhat limited jump range (~40 ly), it's a magnificent explorer.

Currently I mainly fly:

Python: Core mining
FDL: Practicing fixed weapons
ASPx: Exploring/exploding
Vulture: "Little Walter" style fighting
Corvette: Bounty hunting and mat scavenging
Mamba: It's just the most pleasurable and exhilarating ship to fly in the game. Far from perfect, but way more exciting than all the rest combined.

Lately I've been thinking about building a ship to go to Colonia and see what life is like there. Then I would leave the rest of my ships at Jameson, so it would have to be something really allround, like a Python. Properly outfitted that ship will do anything. I would miss the Mamba though, so I would probably have it emailed to Colonia, but that ship and a Python would actually do the job ;)

I don't see that many players in Pythons these days like I used to, but it's apparently still loved by many. Is this because people "burned out" on the Python in the early days and are now enjoying a different experience in ships like the Krait?

I skipped the Python during my PS4 playthrough, but if it's good in VR, I might consider it. Someday I'll have to take one for a test drive.

I sometimes wonder what it would be like to own just a single ship and embrace all the challenges that offers.

I did this for a very time in a Vulture. I got my first Vulture back in 2015, back when you had no engineering and had to really know your power management. Then engineering came along and it was awesome to tinker here and there and squeeze every bit I could out of her. Flew to Colonia and back... twice!... really put a lot of blood, sweat and tears in the old girl... then came the Krait II. And that really became my Serenity/Millennium Falcon.

"Now I did a job. I got nothing but trouble since I did it, not to mention more than a few unkind words as regard to my character so let me make this abundantly clear. I do the job. And then I get paid."

"Kid, I've flown from one side of this galaxy to the other. I've seen a lot of strange stuff..."

Here is my list of ships that I went through...

Sidey - Adder - Type 6 (oh, god NO!) - Cobra III - Asp - Cobra III - Python - Vulture - Krait II - Anaconda (didn't see what all the fuss was about) - Kriat II - Cutter (again, big ships.. meh) - Krait II - Corvette (oohhhhhhhh! Now I get it)

I am still a one ship CMDR, but now I have a Corvette. Will say, some days I miss my Vulture. Zipping thru the mailslot at +250 sideways was fun. I am currently chewing my way towards Elite combat. I am about at 50% Pioneer for exploration and 30% thru Tycoon. I want a triple Elite, but man... it is slow going the closer you get. If only the Thargoids would attack another station, I could get closer!

But yeah. I enjoy the One Ship mentality.
