Newcomer / Intro A question of mining....

Yep, a trade beacon USS appeared near the ring. It's an opportunity to pick up a job. Worth doing once or twice for the experience but unless they buffed the pay since I last checked them out not worth doing.

So, something strange happened tonight.
First, still no painite, though I noticed I'd dropped into the wrong ring. My own fault this time. Still, got some decent silver and gold, so a decent result.

However, while I was mining, I recieved the notification from Verity, "Mission target detected," or something like that. I wasn't on any missions, and I didn't see anything in my contacts list or on sensors... so I have no idea what that was about. Any ideas?
they're optional missions that you get from time to time. I think it's daft that they give you the mission target even though you didn't accept the mission, but that's what happens. It doesn't happen with any other missions. Just ignore it and carry on.

Well, FINALLY got a couple of Painite asteroids (in the same place I've been mining all along, so you know). First one was fair enough, but not far away was another with 41% platinum, 40% Painite and 5% Palladium! Ka-ching! However, some chunks had drifted out of range of my collectors, so I backed up to get them and something (don't know what) hit me and sent me spinning and out of range of the mother lode asteroid... which I could never find again.

On the other hand, I did get a decent haul of Painite, Platinum and Gold. About time!

Why are you mining painite? That's oldschool. Platinum is where the money is now. if you need painite for the engineer, you'll find some with the platinum anyway along with valuable Osmium.
I laser-mine painite in a hotspot overlapped with HighRes site using my Cutter. Can fill 256t cargo in an hour and sell it for 100M Cr.
I use 256t Python to swap cargo since best sell stations don't have L pads.

Really? Looking at current prices of Painite, you shouldn't be able to sell that for more than 80m, give or take, given only low and red demands until the price drops to 290k .

Are the current prices extraordinarily crappy or is there a trick I'm not aware of?

The problem is actually finding that price on offer when you get there. Yesterday I went to 3 stations (all over 400K, with demand over 500, on INARA at the time) with 100t and the best price was under 200K - so at the next one from the list I found price was 207K/t so I cashed-in there as I was becoming royally urined-off by then.

I'm doing about 350T of platimum per hour using a Cutter in an ordinary hotspot. The price for platinum is higher than painite.
