A second commander

So having alts is not going to become a feature (which I think makes the kickstarter options absolutely meaningless... all those systems and ships to choose from and you only choose once), but nobody is stopping you from buying a second game and making a second login, as if you are two people.

Now I was thinking, instead of cluttering up the world with more logins, why not sell additional commander slots for (price of game-5%), that way Frontier knows exactly which ones are "alts" when they need to. It only lowers the threshold by five percent and it keeps things neat and organized for later features to make use of alts.

You could see this as one person representing a company with a few crew members.

I have two logins, it wasn't difficult and I don't see how it clutters the galaxy.

I bought it on sale so it was more than 5% off. You can easily have one direct from FDev and one from steam on the same PC with the same account. And if you don't want to use Steam you can have as many as you like from FDev as long as you create a different Windows user for each Elite Account.

The easiest option is the one already mentioned, one account via the FD launcher and the second account via steam. Works w/o any problems and never the twain shall meet.

Oh come on, who would do such a thing?
Naughty people who have thought through the relative advantages of such knowledge. It is also a way to store commodities is it not, buy yourself a T9 and load it up. Actually its not a bad thing to do particularly if you fly in a group... [arrrr]

In fact now I think of it with my criminal mind you could store massive amounts of UAs in a near unlimited no. of T9s and 'with others' simultaneously bomb whatever you want lol that would be mean I wonder if some group is working on that [squeeeee]

Um, I might point out that just saying that someone "lacks knowledge" does very little to enlight the other people who want to understand the issue, because even someone who "lacks knowledge" can be perfectly right due to good old empirical observation. You should just explain that having two launchers is simpler :)

Btw - I just tried to launch two different copies of the launcher at the same time, and the second launcher just refuses to start: "only one launcher can be active at a time". Each one separately yes, but not both.

I have 3. Two at regular price an another on sale. My primary CMDR does his thing and is supported by my alt. These have horizons and will be getting the next wave of seasons too. The 3rd one stores commodities and is a vanilla one.

There is a CMDR in my friends list that has both accounts running at the same time and flies both at the same time, he just alt tabs to the other CMDR account when its time to land, take off ETC. He is also in the Triple Elite club.

Mine can interact with each other. I use 2 computers and remote software. The 2nd CMDR can't fly from the main computer, but he can drop commodities for the other logged in CMDR. I can either walk to the other computer to fly the other CMDR or switch logins at the main one.

It's also useful for sitting at a marketplace to buy stuff that needs to respawn. My remote CMDR can just sit there while my main one flys about. Very convenient.

Ok, clearly the advantages are lost on all of you :
If people had official alts, instead of multiple games :
1) You could provide a UI to switch without having to quit the game and login again. Your login credentials can be stored as normal. If you have two copies of the game, you need to quit and switch users in the launcher, which was built to assume you only have one user account.
2) If you have a season pass or have backed the game, not to mention all the cosmetic stuff from the store, can then be shared to the alt account.
3) If people misbehave using a second copy of the game, only that copy of the game can be banned. If people misbehave on an alt, the whole account including alts can be sanctioned. So it's worthwile for FDEV to "know" if you are using an alt.
4) Considering how the game works, specifically: the thargoid reveals and the community goals and having a bubble and a colonia area and in general having travel times of half an hour between "interesting things", swapping between tasks is time consuming. Having alts would officially mean "We want you to be able to participate in everything". So being able to "spawn" elsewhere in the galaxy at the click of a button makes sense. Multicrew is sort of like halfway there to accomplishing this, except it doesn't work for singleplayer and you don't get the full benefits/possibilities of having your own ship there.
5)Probably everybody has multiple ships, having official "alts", meaning alternate Holo-me characters, would let you start at the location of one of your other ships. It would make much better use of your fleet.
6) Forget I ever said 5%. It was an arbitrary number, all I wanted to say is, "a discount compared to the full game, at whatever price it is available, but expensive enough to keep trolls from coming back everytime their character gets kicked" (also see point 3).
7) By treating a commander account as a company with multiple characters, it's easier to explain surviving crashing into a sun or a black hole.
8) As mentioned earlier, backers have multiple ways to "start" the game. There's the sidewinder, but also the option to start with an eagle or cobra explorer. Given that you probably never wipe your account, these starter ships have gone to waste. Being able to use alts could give them some meaning again.

And as to why would you want an alt? As people mentioned earlier : It's very potent in multiplayer to fly out multiple shiploads of rares by just waiting in the station with an iEagle and ferry out the stuff while your T9 sits outside. Having about 4 alts and flying back and forth between your ship outside the dumping area means about 3 minutes of flight and activity per trip so 4 alts gives you 12 minutes which is about the time between respawning the allocations/rations of rares.

In other words, doing this gives you the ability to fill up a 500 ton cargo full of rares from one station selling only a handfull at a time. It's not fast but it's faster then flying from station to station.

I bought a second account (disclaimer - I have the LEP)
The money goes to FDev and keeps funding (hopefully) development in ED.

Sounds awful.

It's been done to death.

The game was originally going to have multiple account slots; frankly expecting players to buy a second copy of the game plus second copies of all the expansions just to get something which is common in MMOs as part of the buy-in is more than a bit of a joke. Even so I've said in the past that I would pay for a second account slot, although many wouldn't. I sure as hell wouldn't pay 'just' 5% less than the full price though, make it a tenner for a one-off purchase with all game updates and cosmetic items that you buy being available to both slots and yeah, I'd do it.

As I've said before I'm genuinely amazed at how many people are happy to shell out for full second copies of the game. I think Fdev are taking the proverbial in expecting players to do that to run a second character, not to mention the fact of having to mess around using spoof e-mails and stuff to get registered. Oh and if you want a paintjob or two for your second account you're putting your hand in your pocket again. It's the only aspect of the game where I really do feel they take players for a ride and should have looked at giving people a second slot long, long ago.

FDev have made a couple of vague comments to the effect that it might get looked at at some indeterminate point in the future but to be honest I don't expect them to do anything about it as long as people are willing to throw money at them for it. It just sucks somewhat for those of us who can't justify the expense and expected that it would in fact be included with the base game puchase.

Having said that, it can probably be added to the long, long list of things which are common in MMOs other than Elite in 2017 but which this game, which is essentially a single player game with some MMO-lite features bolted on, doesn't seem to think it needs.
