That plane is an overpriced piece of crap.
It can't perform in the rain, the exhaust is so hot that it buckles the steel deck plates on carriers, and random radio signals mess with the fly by wire control surfaces.
It's maybe the last gasp for human flown combat aircraft, and it's a sad one that is on political life support.

It's the same as with F-22/YF-23 competition. The US government chose Lockheed with an inferior and more expensive design. Therefor they WILL pay the price.

My favourite fighter plane is the F-16.
The unit cost of the F-35 is no where near the highest in history.
It's high for a production fighter, but many planes cost a lot more than 100 million USD each.
The total program cost, which exceeds 1.5 trillion Dollars, is definitely up there though...but that covers several hundred aircraft, related R&D, and other materials.
Hope the pilot is ok.
Um, I know the F22 and F35 are stealthy, but I don't think anyone calls them "stealth planes" like F117?
I was always impressed with the F22 and F35, except for the outrageous price tag.
Seriously, world wide military spending is disgusting - can't we all just get along?
I honestly think remote piloted Jets/drones are the future - they can perform better without someone sitting in them, and if they are shot down they can be replaced.

No we can't all get along; The only reason we haven't all died in a massive fireball is deterrence. Russia, for example, could wipe the UK off the face of the planet but they know that the UK can knock them back into the dark ages now matter how 'cocky' they get.
