Abandon your attempt to kill pirate

Hey guys -

I'm enjoying this game greatly, as I expected I would. This game is truly amazing.

I'm a bit confused about this "abandon your attempt to kill pirate" mission that pops up suddenly. This is what happened:

1) Got mission in system A to kill pirates in sectors B, C, D.
2) I happen to be in sector E.
3) I find a signal and I stop to see it.
4) It's a -clean- trader.
5) He gives me the "abandon your attempt" thing saying that I don't have to be such a monster and kill innocent traders.

This is the second time that happens.

Is there something I'm missing? This is all very strange. I'm not in the right sector, the guy is not a pirate (it's clean). Could this be a bug?

Is it wrong to assume that every "pirate" will be "wanted"? Because if I get a mission to kill pirates, I assume I'm not going to be killing innocent bystanders and get a bounty because of it.

Thanks guys.

I'm loving this, and I'm here for the long, long haul!

This is an alternative mission path you've been offered. You can choose to abandon the mission in your Transactions panel to get the alternative reward offered by the contact you bumped into (if any), or continue to complete your original contract. Abandoning it may also carry a reputation penalty and/or fine so you need to weigh up your choice accordingly. I haven't had one for an assassination mission myself, but that's the general gist of the hauling equivalents.

I wouldn't take too much stock in what you're being told about the targets being innocent - likely the contact trying to pull the wool over your eyes!

Glad you're enjoying it! Totally agree.

Had the same mission today. The new contact told me to meet him on a different station (which was about 150LY away(!)), and i only had 3 hours to get there.

Thing is, when i got there after 2 hours of travelling, it seemed that i had to abandon the mission first and "pick up my payment".
So does that mean i have to fly back to complete the mission and fly back AGAIN to meet the person?
If so.. oh dear. :S

Yeah, I understand the premise of the mission. What's confusing to me is that it's not a pirate but an innocent trader, and he was on the "wrong" system.

First one is simple, though: the contractee tried to trick me into killing an innocent trader. (which I think it's -awesome- that can happen)

Him being on a completely different system than the one stated in the mission, that sounds weird as I imagine being sent in a wild-goose chase around incorrect systems wouldn't be nice gameplay.

Thanks for the prompt responses!

I had one of these yesterday and also didn't realise that you have to abandon the original mission to activate the alternative. Oh well, I'll know better next time. Lovin' it.

Sadly it's not as deep as that. The guys you are supposed to kill are actually pirates and it's that "innocent trader" trying to lure you to the dark side ;)

IMPORTANT: Tested this mechanic very thoroughly today and it seems that it always happens on the first USS you happen to check out. That's the good news. The bad news is that this mechanic is broken for the "hunt" missions. When you have already killed some pirates and *then* you go to USS and some guy gives you an alternative path, it resets your kill count! Happened to me 3 times, always with the same effect. It works fine for missions without a counter (like delivieries), but if you plan to hunt pirates/traders/authority/whoever, you better stop at the nearest USS *before* you start killing. Lost 1 mission because of it because my killcount was at 6 out of 7, the "trader" approached me, my counter went back to 0 out of 7 and I didn't have enough time left to complete it. Needs fix. Badly.

1. Find the pirate
2. Quest automatically switches, he turns to be a "clean trader" and tells me to return and kill "Authority"

A.From here i tried to do what he tolds me.
I return and search for some signals...Authority scans me and says im clear...I kill them and sometimes get a fine on me.

Or B. Kill the "Clean Trader" he actually had a bounty on his head. The quest doesnt update at all its still tells me to kill the authority.

I wish the quest would update again when the pirate is dead.

This was a "clean trader" (how do I know if he actually is wanted if it says clean?), and sent me to kill "pirates". I just ran out of time, I could only find a single unidentified signal that turned out to be a wanted.

I'm assuming that "wanted" and "pirate" are synonyms, otherwise, I've no idea how to identify a pirate.

Anyways, this is the second mission I fail because of this.

Pirates are members of a pirate faction. Pirate factions tend to have ominous names. Alternatively, just go to an extraction site or asteroid belt and wait for someone to scan you and say "what goodies are you carrying?" Or something similar. Then you shoot them :)

These "alternate mission paths" are one of the most unintuitive mechanics I have ever encountered in a video game. Give us a proper dialog, that states the alternatives we can choose between and a list of rewards/fines/consequenses that every choice implies. THEN I would be able to make a reasonable choice. The way it is now is just highly irritating.

FWIW - I tried a couple of these and couldn't fathom the logic. I didn't want to switch alleigence but it didn't seem to allow me to complete the original mission.

I've just hit a problem with this mechanic.

Mission is to kill 3 pirates. I kill 2, I think, then hit the Clean who tells me to abandon the mission.
I DON'T select abandon. I instead go on to kill more pirates.
I return to the station where I was offered the original Kill Pirates mission: it's not listed in the Bulletin board.
When I look in my transactions, I can see the mission, and can choose to Abandon it.

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to ignore the Clean merchant, go on and kill my pirates, and claim my bounty as per the original mission.

Can anyone explain what I'm missing?

Don't kill the "Clean" merchant. If you check his faction it's not going to be with the pirates you're actually hunting. When I checked he was with the faction that had originally given me the mission! It's a ploy. If you kill him you'll just get a bounty.

You need to keep killing Wanted pirates until the computer tells you the objective is complete. Then your transactions will update and tell you go collect payment. As it is, to find lots of pirates, you might try the navigation beacons near stars.

When you meet the "clean" pirate your kill count for the mission gets reset. Also pirate kills must be in USS's. The kill count doesn't work well either and not all the wanted kills in USS's appear to count. But when you have killed enough pirates you get a "OBJECTIVE COMPLETED" message in really big letters in the middle of the screen, and if you check the "transactions" tab it tells you to go collect your reward. If you just ignore the new mission after the "clean" pirate appears and carry on killing wanted in the USS's you will complete the original mission. To check your progress look in the "transactions" tab, it displays the number of confirmed kills there.

That's not true. I completed my mission at a navigation beacon. So I think you can find them in both USS's and at the beacons.

Did'nt know that. I got interdicted between USS's and it didn't count, just assumed it had to be USS's after that.
First bit of bounty hunting for me, found it a great diversion from trading, and a nice little earner too :)

Seems interdiction kills dont count, but kills in asteroid belts, nav beacons and USS' work.

However, this reseting the kill counter after you meet the Clean guy is absolutely horrific. Just spent about two hours looking for wanteds, was down to 6 out of 7 and boom, all for nothing.

i have this now but the only option appears to be abandon. I'm not being offered anything at the station I took the original mission.
