About to jump into the VR world .. simple question.

One of the things others don't seem to like about VR, drving around in the SRV (I dont get ill from VR it seems), I think is one of the best experiences.

Agreed. I actually enjoy surface prospecting thanks to VR. Really peaceful and relaxing driving around in the little guy. Too bad it makes so many people sick.

I launched off a mountain yesterday - in VR - and after bouncing once I ended up floating down the slope like a ski jumper for what seemed ages .... backwards. Was very very odd.

Would ski jump backwards again.

I have the Lenovo too. It's very good, albeit I've never tried any others to have something to compare to.

Key things to set for the Lenovo in my experience that increase the sharpness without damaging fps:
- WMR rendering (renderTargetScale=2) to 2, NOT the default 1.
- Steam VR I set to 150%, in game HMD quality to 1.0, in game supersampling to 1.0, maybe try that as a starting point and then increase HMD in game if your system can handle it. I only have a lowly GTX 970 and it all works very well at those settings.

Sweet spot is small, position of the headset is key, especially vertically. Slightly out, blurred, get it right text is very sharp.

...

Off topic, people often talk about the stations in VR being amazing, which they are, the scale etc. One of the things others don't seem to like about VR, drving around in the SRV (I dont get ill from VR it seems), I think is one of the best experiences. The scale is obvious on surfaces, more than in space I think. You're in a small vehicle, which your brain is fooled into believing you can literally reach out and touch as it's so close, and outside there's this massive space ship. Parked on top of a mountain, or surrounded by 100 foot water geysers. I can just sit there on planets gawping.

Anyway ...

edit - the rendertargetscale file location etc is in Steed's WMR thread:
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...lity-VR-info-installation-and-troubleshooting

Great points Thistle (I'm pretty sure the rendertargetscale setting is now 2 by default i.e. latest update)

Another thing to point out - peel off the front and rear padding of the headband (it's okay they're velcroed on) and switch 'em over so what was on the rear is now on the front and what was on the front is now on the rear of the headband.
Same comfort but the difference in thickness puts your eyes that little bit closer to the lenses increasing FOV and clarity!!

Yep, definitely makes a difference swapping the padding, although I ended up swapping it back just because it made my glasses *just* too close to the lenses so that they would occasionally touch, which I'm sure would scratch one or both surfaces.

TBH, the full Rift setup with 2 sensors and a pair of touch controllers is now available in Argos for £349...
Considering the same setup cost me close to £1000 when I bought it a couple of years ago.

Another +1 for SRV.

I was at a POI, very close to the Baker's Prospect space station. Nearby was a battered looking wanted Cobra, guarding the POI's crashed probe. I scanned the probe and the Cobra launched and from above began straffing runs, attacking me from above.

I dismissed my shieldless Sidewinder. thinking I'm going to get blown up but at least would end up safe in the ship. So I just watch the Cobra boost away and true for another attack.

Then from above and behind me a station patrol Viper attacks the Cobra! Brilliant!

All this action seems far weightier when you are exposed in the SRV.

Exactly the same for me also Kellan! A lot now for the money no doubt!!

I'd like to try the Rift to compare to the Lenovo (see, now I'm obsessed with VR :D) but not for £350. Considering my Lenovo cost me all of .... £150. And I missed the £105 deal by a few hours. If I'd got that, I'd have ordered 2 ...

Honestly thistle it's an eye opener (no pun intended)......I had fond memories of my Rift ownership but the Lenovo was a big suprise!

As I said in another post, to be sure it wasn't deluding myself I tried a friend's Rift (another avid ED fan) and was slightly dismayed.....and probably offended him by declaring
that I couldn't go back to it!

I'm not knocking the Rift (and don't wish to annoy owners) but the text clarity alone is night and day between the two.

The OP has made a good choice!!

Not bad, it is a good cheap choice to know if you will really like it, if you do, you can plan to buy a high end (maybe next generation) headset in the future and if you don't you won't lose too much.

I hope you enjoy it!

Lmao, that was me. Got my Vive, had that WOW moment in the cockpit, then dropped the SRV on the planet. Hit the gas and cranked into a turn and UH OH!! XD. Sickness hit. It's getting better though.

If you stop playing when motion sickness hits and give yourself a break, it really gets better over time. I was pretty prone to nausea, when i got my headset, not being able to play for longer than 15 minutes in a row. But over a few weeks it got better and better and nowadays i can spent several hours in VR without getting sick at all. The key is not to force yourself. Breaks are important, or you might end up being unable to play in VR at all.
For me, training VR also came with a little surprise, as i totally lost my fear for heights. I wasnt even able to stand on a ladder without having one hand grabbing on to something... That is completely gone.
Well... racing through canyons at almost Mach 3 or jumping over 2 km deep canyons in a buggy on a regular basis might explain the mental and physical changes :D

Warning, schoolboy error incoming. Got my Lenovo yesterday .. forgot that my 1060 6gb only has one hdmi output!.

Got a Displayport to hdmi lead arriving today .. will update once I am up and running.

I think I am more excited than someone of my age should be over a new toy :D

Damn, I had the same problem, completely forgot I had to buy one.

Yeah, I went on a local hunt for the lead/adapter yesterday, every shop I went into (except one) had never even heard the term 'displayport'. t'was a little disheartening. But, hey ho ... should be up and running later on today.

What a numpty!! ;)

Seriously though....it's a bother innit.....don't forget you need Bluetooth 4 also!!!!

Looking forward to your thoughts

P.S. are you sometimes known as SovietAgent?

Ok so after messing around for hours, I have gotten nowhere. the headset apears to be fully recognised in device manager but i'm being told i'm plugged into an incompatable USB controler. any ideas (i have looked into this and already tried a few things out I could find).

still very happy with my purchase BTW :)

Okay, are you using a USB port tied directly to the motherboard? If so, it might not be getting enough juice to do the job. I had to buy a USB 3.0 card for one of my empty slots, one that actually gets powered separately. That cleared it up for me.
