Little Boy Blue and the Man on the Moon

Max seemed agitated. "It was great seeing you Dad, but I've got to get back to work."

"Sure son. I was so close I just had to swing by. We should have a tennis match sometime. A ship this big you'll get plenty practice in free fall. You might have a chance at beating your old man." He looked around the cabin. "What are you hauling anyway?"

Max looked at his feet as his father checked the itinerary.

"Slaves? There are slaves in the cargo hold?"

Max continued to stare down at his feet.

"My son is a slave trader."

Nanodrabblow

Fingers trembling, Frank unwrapped the package. By size it must be from The Publisher -- a dataslate engraving of his first proper book.

All that work, all those hours spent. It wouldnae've happened without that hyperspace glitch, on the jump to Leesti.

Instead of taking thirty seconds to arrive, it took thirty days. By the time he blinked back into normspace, he had a novel.

That would show Simoof and Doc, Twisted and Mogadon, Darkoba and Winnard. Naysayers, curse them.

The paper came off. Frank held the dataslate triumphantly. And saw the title.

"Drabblissiminimus - A Memoir of the Craft, by Psykokow."

A sigh, softly exhaled, tickled his ears.
"This is not what I was hoping for".

His heart sank a little and he launched himself into an effort to defend his purchase.
"It's top of the range stuff. Technically it's of a really high standard, and it's cheaper than the budget you stipulated."

"I'd much rather have paid more for something with quality content, than this....

Trading is about taking good opportunites and spending money to make more money.

You really just don't have a brain.....
for this business, Simoof"

The stuff is of a good technical standard, but.... Susan Boils?"

I would have waited tbh........

:D

I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel a small pang of disappointment when I saw the title of the book. On the bright side I'm looking forward to Psykokow's pronunciation on Friday :)

That was rather the point. ;)

Actually, you've made me think - I may tweak the title to multiply the fun factor.

This disappointing tale of woe
Comes from the heart of Winnard's Hole
-------------------------

Edward was no longer here.
He was no longer even near.
His whereabouts as yet unclear
and so they called him "Far Ted"

He had a book he couldn't write,
His letter "T"s had taken flight,
Disappeared into the night
and soon to follow "Far Ted"

He searched the old, explored the new
For letter lost 'tween S and U
Sadness now inside him grew.
Disappointed "Far Ted"

He never found the missing "T"s
Instead he substituted "P"s.
His book, named after "Listeri",
"A Lipple Ship Who Farped"

<world-weary sigh> Let me begin by thanking all those who put forward a Drabble. I know it wasn't the topic we wanted, but we all did our best under the circumstances.

01 - Darkoba - Nowhere to Go but Down
02 - Simoof - The multi-million dollar upgrade - a tale of woe and suppery. (based on a true story)
03 - {SAS}Stalker - Disappointed
04 - Listeri69 - Cruising for a Bruising......
05 - Splendour - Dis-Appointed
06 - DocStone - DR Ted is a nonce and has nothing to do with this Drabble
07 - Goose4291 - Reassignment
08 - insanephoton - Out in the void
09 - Ian Phillips - Where is the quality content?
10 - Frank - Little Boy Blue and the Man on the Moon
11 - CdrTwisted - Nanodrabblow
12 - Clef_Hanger - "A Lipple Ship Who Farped"

But only 12 Drabbles so far. I guess I can't hide how gutted I am at the low turnout. If there's one very thin silver lining around this massive black raincloud it's that there is still a day before I put the poll up. There's plenty of opportunity few new Drabble writers to fill up the 8 remaining slots.

Everyone should know the drill by now. We've been doing it often enough. A Drabble is a story of exactly 100 words. Our competition sets these stories in the Elite universe, and the subject of this week's contest is DISAPPOINTMENT

Just stick your entry in this thread. I'll stick all the Drabbles in a poll on Thursday night, but be quick. It's limited to the first 20 entries. New contestants are welcomed with open arms. You'll find us all a happy-go-lucky lot. <sigh>

Double the Dismay

"Just let me off the ship," pleaded Kalran.

Rose shook her head. "No, you're a risk and we don't need you pointing your finger our direction. You're staying."

She left Kalran's room and secured it, double-checking communications lockout.

"We're ready to launch," stated Seamus. "There are reports of bounty hunters nearby. Time to slip out. Bloodless, you ready, mate?"

"No, we need ta ditch this crazy Hindu. He's been howling all week o'er what we done to 'is Orca. Lemme kill 'im."

"Not happening," said Rose as she buckled in. "Like it or not, I'm keeping an eye on him."

Three Really Isn't a Magic Number

I first heard the word Troilism at Mistress Payne's Correctional Establishment.

On querying the meaning, and being pleasantly surprised that dwarves weren’t involved, I left my manuscript for proof-reading and immediately departed.

Hurrying homeward, I paused briefly to forewarn my good lady, Clamydia, of my intentions; requesting that she find a willing participant amongst her numerous friends.

At home, after Clamydia had introduced her friend, newly returned from Paris, and coincidentally well-versed in this very practise, we set to with vigour.

Truthfully, despite my wife’s encouragement and that of her friend, Mike Coxwells, it was not all I had hoped.

Sleepless nights - the price of peace

Telakin looks at the mission counter "Remaining time: 30 hours".

It has been a busy week, hauling nearly 1.000.000 tonnes of metals to Herreshoff Gateway in Kwatee, fighting pirates, training newbies, calculating strategies.

His group, the Mercs of Mikunn, are building themselves a new station and tier 3 - already a close call - should bring a commodity market, crucial to sustain the station in the long run, Tier 8 would have brought a shipyard, but only if the contract ran for another 490 days, give or take a few.

"Disappointment? No, we are getting us a shiny new home!"

What the brochures don't tell you!

For the first few days she'd been overwhelmed by the nausea, not to mention the little oompa shapes that can-canned across her vision. Shrooms without the fun.
Last night it had settled enough that she could relax into the dinner, and even enjoy the weightless dancing after whilst the Orca spun gently above the earth-like's metallic ring.
Initially offended at the suggestion of a cruise she was now glad she'd relented, waking this morning had felt blissful.

Except.
The initial skip to the bathroom gone she scowled whilst attaching herself, then winced at the vacumn sucking.

Yup, definitely no poo-phoria.

Room for some more......

Heritage

I could taste victory was close.
I had chased this asp from Lave to Veamit.
Now my interdict unit BITES HARD on his ship and we we’re alone at last.
My coms burst into life with the usual begging and tales of family waiting somewhere for them to return home with essential food… blah blah blah
I continue to fire until something makes me smile
“target shields offline”
Now sweet crumps as kinetic rounds pound their way through my targets hull..
Then protestations over coms cease, and boom, silence.
It’s time to visit his family… wouldn’t want to disappoint them..
