What REALLY happened on Pad 3 at Hutton Orbital

Emarr, still hungover, opened the box of Bariho Ursine gums bought on Clement Orbital just before departing for H.O.

A note fell unnoticed onto the floor.

Finishing the last few as the Type-6 softly caressed the landing pad, the note was spotted.

“Congratulations on purchasing Bariho's new Healthy Ursine gumsweets.
Still delicious, but now sugar-free.
Side effects may...”

A sudden cold sweat, stomach cramps and tectonic intestinal rumblings, meant that reading on was superfluous. Side effects were happening and with a vengeance promising to be swift, excruciating and unstoppable. They didn't disappoint.

The consequences went far beyond a cabin deep-clean.

Punishment duty

"So, you're the new guy huh?"
"Yes sir."
"Right, I'm Major Anderson, and I'll be in charge of your kitchen patrol."
"Kitchen patrol?"
"Yea, it's what we call the Hutton patrol, it's been used as a punishment assignment so much, it got named after
the historical nickname for the potato peeling punishment used in armies centuries ago. That reminds me, who
did you cheese off to get this gig?"
"Uhh, General McCreevy."
"Oh her, figures, she's a big proponent of 'do as I say, not as I do', did you call her out on her gin habit?"
"Yes, I did."

Into The Unknown

Remote, isolated, distant, quiet, reclusive and barren used to describe Hutton Orbital.

On any given day it was rare to see a ship docking.

Sometimes it would be days between ships.

...Until they announced needing scrap for "the mug".

Now there are hundreds and hundreds of ships lined up outside the platform with daily convoys bringing hundreds of thousands of tonnes of scrap and the station is so full of pilots there is rumor of turning the platform into a station!

Will Hutton Orbital ever return to it's deathly quiet lifestyle or will it be changed forever?

Time will tell

There's a nasty rumour going about that a white-haired old miner was hanging around Hutton Orbital offering pilots free barrels of scrap as a bribe to vote for him. I'd just like to say that this is a nasty and vicious lie with absolutely no basis in fact.

On a completely separate note, which has no connection to the previous paragraph, I'd like to welcome any new commanders to this thread. Every Thursday Night a thread is spurred off from this main thread. This allows you to vote for any kind and generous Drabble writers you know, writers such as Frank, who diligently passed out free scrap at Hutton Orbital, and did it without the merest thought of recompense.

I feel prospective voters should be warned, some drabblers will try to woo you for your vote with promises of riches and rewards. Please don't be swayed, don't vote for any mononymous Commanders, they can't be trusted!

Now that I've carried out my public service warning... GET DRABBLING EVERYONE!

We're into the double figures with a number of Commanders still recovering from the Hutton run. I hope to see you all in here when you're rested. Just be sure to submit before tomorrow evening.

MUG!

A Message from "Friends of Frank"

My esteemed colleague appears to have developed mononymaphobia. Of course we, being British, are above the sort of mud-slinging politics that are much more prevalent in other parts of the world. I would ask you, when the voting starts this Thursday night, to bear in mind the last comment of his above post, which was to call you all "mugs!"

I, on the other hand, have nothing but the greatest respect for all you people out there, and I'm sure when the time comes, you will choose the candidate that will take this thread though to the next topic choice in the most efficient and fiscally sound way possible.

I refute Mr Midden's libellous comments regarding mononymous Commander names, and ask you to remember to vote for the drabble writer that's been on this forum the longest and has never won a drabble contest week legitimately. Ignore any other drabble writer who has previously won.

So, in summary ...
1. Vote for the person who has written a drabble and been on the forum the longest
2. Don't vote for any previous week's winners.

I'll get the current Drabble list up this evening (y'all's time). Gotta get ready for a client meeting.

And I've got my drabble written in my head. Gotta find time to type it up while en route to Hutton Orbital for the 42nd time. :/

HUTTON ORBITAL!!! Wash yer ears out son....

'Nope, don't need any animal meat. We've got lumps of it around the back.'

The perpetually confused Kow had surpassed even his levels of bewilderment this time.

'B.b.b.b.but.... what the hell am I going to do with all those?'

A haggis stained finger pointed to his ship that smelled like it had been dug up after a thousand years under a dungheap, The bleating was deafening everyone in a 100 yard radius.

'Took me weeks to get here......'

He removed the clothes-peg from his nose

A small woolly head nuzzled his leg in apparent sympathy.

'Coulda sworn he said Mutton...'

That's an illegal drabble for ... some reason (I'll find or fabricate a reason somehow)
And T.J. has won before, so my 2nd point stands (vote for someone who hasn't won yet) ... and last week doesn't count as I cheated :p

To be fair I'm only claiming back my 2 votes that some others believe they now own the rights to.

Always Check Your Levels

0.11 light years to go according to the scanner I get up out of the pilots seat to stretch my legs
Hutton Orbital, who even bothered going there in the first place I'd already checked the whole ship no point in doing that again
A cargo bay full of scrap and a fuel-tank...wait I didn't check the fuel....I did refuel...I think...
Running back into the cockpit..check the fuel level... I didn't refuel
oh..Scrap...
Calculating I work out i can reach the station if i dump my load
Cargo-less
And thats when I saw Simoof

Mug Meet

Hutton's packed concourse had never seen it's like, the galaxy's finest commanders standing cheek by jowl, mugs aloft, their grandest achievement shining gloriously in hand.

Remnants of scrap lay discarded; chaos before rebirth. The humid air smelling faintly of hydrogen drifted between the raised metal receptacles. Gleans of condensate added to the mist of triumph as cold ale collided in celebration.

"Huzzah!" <for thousands of heroes>
"Huzzah!" <for sickness eradicated>
"Huzzah!" <for a community of comrades>

As Hutton Orbital rejoiced it's heroes of toil, it's champions of scrap, not a soul looked smug, for it was all for the MUG!

Cleaonymus and Texas Stu I'm counting you both short on words. Stu i think that you've maybe included the 3 words of your title.

Erik's going to raise the poll tomorrow so to anyone thinking of entering a drabble, go ahead and stick one in. It's simple, just write a 100 word short story set in Elite: Dangerous on this week's topic - Hutton Orbital.

Fly Safe or Fly Dangerous - we don't mind :D

First.... YEAH!!! T.j HAS RETURNED!!!! I didn't even read his drabble before repping it! :D

Second.... Thank you, Midden, for getting the summary post up. Today's been more than hectic with Hutton and clients. But tomorrow is free and I'll get that dirty poll of Frank's up in time to keep y'all happy.

My poll isn't dirty. I wash it every day.. And I give it a good rub to make it sparkle.
