The Crew

Seems like a lifetime spent flying ..alone.

Running tonnes of canisters ..alone.

Bounty Hunting ..alone.

Doing missions ..alone.

Killing enemies in conflict zone ..alone.

The picture paints itself.

And then there were wings and it got better but mostly we all were still ..alone.

Power play didn't make me feel any more united.

And then there was the Hutton Orbital Truckers..

Not one or two or ten or several hundred.
WE are literally thousands strong.
And if as one we traveled thousands of light years, all at super cruise speeds, at all hours, in wings and in convoys...

Plastic Fantastic

Exploring the galaxy is a lonely business. Scan, scoop, jump, scan, scoop, jump, over and over. Collecting data on worlds I can never set foot on from my tiny Type Six, the closest fellow soul is more than a thousand light years away.

I'd go crazy without my crew. They greet me every morning with a smile, they nod goodnight when I go to sleep. They're with me every step of my journey, keeping me sane.

So far I have Denton, Felicia and the mighty Braben! all three nodding away as I scan, scoop, jump, bobble, scan, scoop, jump, bobble....

He sat, hand trembling as he sucked hard on his cigarette, holding his breath for such a long time before rasping his exhale.
The glass of whiskey on the table also failed to steady his trembles.
The Interrogator spoke
“so you’re not working with them, but you are the only member of your ship to survive the attack?”
“Yessss,” his stammer the effects of the cold of space as much his fear.
“you must have made some kind of deal?”
“yesssss”
“we can let you leave until we know what you gave the Thargoids to let you go”

Crafty Curmudgeonly Captains Compromise Crew Creativity 'Cause... Reasons

From front of bridge the Ensign said what everyone was thinking, "what's that massive pink thing in your hand Captain!?". Moments earlier the Captain had been manhandling the sausage machine below-deck in an attempt to relieve the new galley assistant after a bad collision had catapulted the crew's favourite wage pool purchase into the poor sod's chest.

"It's a banger, and talking of bangs what was that infernal crash a minute ago!"

"Wasn't a crash Cap'n, it was Terry there trying out our giant broncobot"

"What? Right, that's it, I'm putting you lot on new meds, that onion stuff's defective!"

"Ah, Commander. Awake at last?"

"Where no one will find you... Seems you had a rough night."

"Am I? No one of importance. However, my employer..."
"Ah..."
"'Ah' indeed. He is looking forward to meeting you, although I am curious as to why.
You seem far less impressive without that ship of yours."
"Ship's... not impressive."
"A prime condition Anaconda with the full military package? I beg to differ."
"My crew's impressive."
"Those cretins? In this age of point and click destruction? What could possibly make you say that?"
"Firstly, they're standing behind you. Secondly, they're armed."

A New Beginning

Ava watched the new crew as they approached the ship. She had read all their files. They were young and inexperienced but otherwise seemed quite promising. Certainly better than the previous crew.

The last lot had got themselves killed and Ava had been lucky to survive. That was in the past and best forgotten, now it was time to introduce herself.
"Welcome to the ship. I'm your Autonomous Virtual Assistant. You can call me Ava. Is there anything that you require?"
Ava felt guilty about not revealing her true nature but her kind were still feared and persecuted by humans

Ok, y'all.... Listen up. Every week we need someone to step forward in the first day to Host the Drabble Competition. Remember, it's not fair for one person to do it week after week (like Frank's been doing).

It's not a hard job. A post a day (or one every 2 days) in the thread, summarizing the drabbles entered so far and reminding us of how many days remain.
Then the Poll, which takes about 30 minutes cut-n-paste to put up around 10pm BST.

It's 11pm CDT here (6 hours from y'all) and I saw nothing was posted, so I'm working on it now. I've been busy with this years second tax season (lots of clients) and my son's absolute lack of cognitive ability relating to algebra and something called "tech theater". It's got my brain hurting....

Anyway, I **am** posting the poll now.... Give me about 30 minutes and you'll see it up.

I'm sorry about that Erik. I was intending to leave it until the last minute because of the Pirates V Truckers tutorial, but then I forgot. Thanks for stepping up to the plate for me.

I'll do it next week. It's not a hard job to cut'n'paste the poll together and I'll do it if nobody else want to. But it is nice to see different hosts now and again, and the different flavour they add to the polling spiel.

Frank, you don't need to apologize. You do the Lion's share of the work with the polls. Then it's Midden and me, and 'Kow every once in a while. But now Kow is really busy with the radio station and the events we put together.

I'd like to see some of our other drabblers have a go at Hosting. Hosting may not take long, but after several weeks, I know it can wear on a person.

So let's see some of our other drabblers step forward and try their hand!

Just fill in the data sheet, then copy and paste what you need from the other pages, it does give you a fairly good idea of the word count too, if it shows red, then you may need to investigate the word count further

I've considered writing a web app to host drabbles.

Automated word counting, poll creation, slot counting etc, with options for anonimity during voting and all that jazz, with automated cut off times and notifications to come vote etc.

I'm sure there's a number of features it could have that would be useful?

Only issue is losing the integration with the forums There's no way for example to stick an iframe in a post.

Only thing I can imagine partially working would be a dynamically generated image.

A web app could scrape the articles off the thread if done right (and not against the forum's T&Cs) then word count and create your image showing word counts and countdown.

I don't know about everyone else but I currently use a wordcounter website. I'd be happy to change websites to one which automatically accepted my submission instead of cut'n'pasting it to the forum.

The one thing I would want though is that the software should ensure it doesn't alienate any prospective new Drabblers; no sign-up, no need for email addresses, and the poll generated should just be posted onto the community creations part of the forum just like it is now. Auto-posting permission is where you may need to do a little begging to Frontier Developments <grin>

If you're going to write a web app for the drabbles, I'd like to suggest this ...

Source url (the Abraka Drabble thread you are currently reading) this would be the last inputted thread url by default, but have the option to change it just in case.

Topic title text input box.

Image input box either a url to a hosted image (probable the best method) or uploading an image

post # for each drabble - so there would be 20 numerical input boxes where you just put the post number of each drabble. This then grabs the post text, allowing for editing because some people post extra info in the same post as their drabble. This would also grab the post title if people put a post title in their post, but allow for text entry if no title was grabbed.

Then when the person using it is happy with everything the app has grabbed and edited everything as required, they click on a "Generate Poll" button that generates a text box for simple copy & pasting into a post of a new thread, using bold bbcode where necessary and using colour bbcode where necessary.

So, I'm thinking like this ...
