Oh, hmm, Cathy was 1 word too short. I think we should deduct one vote from her for that! Which... still means she wins by a huge margin
Edit: Though if you count "zero-g" as two words (I'd normally write "zero G") then it fits at exactly 100.

How about I put up a drabble checking webpage that does the count for you?
Once I've got the basic one drabble version working it would be simple to add a mass checking page for whoever is running the contest thread that week.
I'll start writing it in a day or so but feel free to beat me to it if you have the knack, just send me a copy of the code when you are done so I can include it in my site.
By the way, this post is 100 words long – does that count as my submission?

Different versions of word will give you different word counts - so the best thing to do is not use hyphenated words, they will somtimes be counted as one word, sometimes as two.
true, but i was thinking something that was an agreed format - as has been said different versions of the same software often give a different count.
I wasn't aware of http://www.wordcounter.net/ but if everyone agree's to use it then we have a common standard to go by when deciding the count.
Confound it! And so anti-clockwise must give way to widdershins...
I propose gentle leeway on hyphenated words, within reason. e.g. x-ray and pan-galactic are in, super-duper-viper-vapouriser is out.

He was excited that the package had arrived. It was the new super-duper nervous system thought control interface kit. The advert had said “Become one with your spaceship! Be a single entity running through the stars effortlessly dodging asteroids. Pirates will explode on your merest whim!”
After much banging, hammering and welding he slipped the plug into his neural interface. He yelled in pain. All the control jets and valves fluttered uncontrollably, and the undercarriage retracted causing the spaceship to land with a thump. He scampered over to disarm the now active missile.
He got out his mouse and keyboard.
