Need to establish what the problem is.

Is it the PSU? - often they bite the dust. If the computer doesn't even turn on I suspect this would be the problem.

If the computer does turn on but doesn't get to the BIOS boot screen then it could be the memory. Try taking it out and reseating it.

If its just hanging with a flashing cursor or seomthing similar and not loading the OS.. its likely to be the hard drive - they wear out, I've been through several over the years.

Ahem, read the thread - MoBo is dead.

So I have an AMD 5050e CPU (AM2, only dual core, 2.6GHz but better than nothing) that anyone is welcome to should they need it (great for HTPCs as it's only 45w TDP).
And I may well have an AM2+ uATX m/board and 8Gb of DDR2 RAM to fit going spare in a couple of months :)

So I asked a few people, but nothing immediately suitable turned up from the back of cupboards (unless you want a Pentium 4 with, er, I think it was EDO RAM).

But if you're signed up for the Beta, so can wait until the new year, I'll have an AM2+ uATX m/board that will take your AM3 processor and other bits and pieces (as long as your case will accept a generic uATX board).

I don't think it'll take your DDR3 RAM, but the 8Gb of DDR2 that's in the m/b now will be as de-commissioned along with the board so I can throw that in too.

It's PCI-E 2 so your video card should be fine, and it has SATA II (3Gb) and IDE ports.

The board's a good one and your CPU is on the compatibility list with the current (latest) BIOS already installed
https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M3N78VM/#support

Can't guarantee it'll last forever but it's been under-stressed and overcooled for quite a while, and has a good reputation (and runs Linux and Windows 8.1 with no problems for me).

If you get a better offer before then, or you really decide to give up your Elite pledge before then, don't let me stop you, but if my board swap goes as planned over christmas, I'll be more than happy to pack this one up and stick it in the post and you're saving me shelf space :)

I'll contact you to arrange delivery etc as timing allows over the new year.... I'm @schmerg on twitter or schmerg.com is me too if you don't hear from me by then...

Bravo community spirit, I looked but only have an old MSI K8N Pro. Every one to their own conscience. I don't think anyone should be told what to do, especially when there are people dying for lack of food and clean water...As for supporting Elite development why don't people just buy Frontier stock? It is the job of shareholders to fund a company. If Frontier and their shareholders can't fund it then may they should sell stock in the project ED. Then I will stump up for more than my Federal Trader purchase. I'm sorry David but you can't have us fund the game then profits go to the shareholders.

Just an update:-

I'd like to say a HUGE 'Thank you' to everyone that helped and especially those who offered me hardware. Thank you, its great to see that theres still good people around :)

To cut a long story short, a new mobo arrived in the mail yesterday, it was ordered 'in secret' by my wife who used her xmas savings money to buy it for me.

Yes, I told her many times not to, but she did. she's not up on hardware but I keep all my old boxes and so she just looked for the mobo box and ordered that, so I have an exact replacement for the one that died.

Didn't know whether to hug her or shout at her for using her money on me, that she really can't afford. but I settled on the former :)

Thanks again everyone!

Great outcome, Give her a hug, she deserves it. :D

Really glad to hear that Steve! I am so glad you are back up and will be able to enjoy the game! And you have got a great other half there mate!! She's a keeper. ;)

Any thoughts from anyone on whether the PSU is to be trusted with the new mobo?

Great news about the new m/b, and obviously a lot less hassle than changing to a different board, but yeah, you might want to check the PSU (and I put all my computers on surge protector power boards too).

Cheap PSUs do have a tendency to go pop and/or push out dodgy voltages, so don't blindly replace it with a cheap PSU, but if you know anyone with a PSU tester (something like http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thermaltake...y-Tester/dp/B005LHTULW/ref=pd_sim_computers_2) or a friendly PC shop who might test your shop for a small fee, it might be worthwhile.

The m/b might have just gone pop by itself, but if it died because the power capacitors were slowly being cooked by a poor PSU, then the new one might go the same way...

Got it up and running now :)

oops.. I never considered the PSU, I guess we'll have to see how it goes.

on another subject, whats a good 'alternative' to Elite right now?
I'm in the mood for a space game and unsure whats fun.

X series?. Oolite?, something else?
