It's weird, isn't it, what motivates people?
The PS trophies, for the most part, are all low hanging fruit. Mine X amount of this substance (I recently discovered it was just 25t of Gold), collect 100,000cr in bounties, fly this far, use the SRV that far and so on.
So you can see that they might motivate people to try different aspects of the game just to get the trophy but then you get in game motivations of a similar nature, engineers. As someone was making the point on here just this week, if you go around unlocking all the engineers, they're simply mechanisms to get you to investigate many aspects of the game. Of course the engineers also provide a greater, more useful reward than a badge or trophy, they unlock their engineering capabilities.
On the one hand, I get the idea that something is offer to encourage you to 'explore' all aspects of the game but on the other hand I kind of view it that if you're playing the game to unlock a trophy, then you're doing it the wrong way round.
Each to their own I suppose. What I do understand is, trophies/badges are there and must be conquered for someone who is a completionist. I thankfully don't fall into this category meaning I won't feel compelled to do CQC or form a wing or use SLFs.
