After blowing up rocks gets boring....

The new mining system is welcomed, though I'm not so excited.

After we have blown up a few rocks and they go kaboom, what reason is there still to mine lesser value resources?

Is there a link into the missions system, why bother filling up a hold with Rutile?

Where is the real depth here, can anyone see?

Are you seeking "purpose" or "meaning"?

The changes were merely meant to improve gameplay involving mining- not to give meaning to the activity itself. That's something you'll need to answer for yourself, as most activities in the game aren't really attached to a greater purpose, other than some sort of "temporary entertainment".

Not trying to sound pretentious or condescending here, just making the point that the game wasn't designed as an all-inclusive self-sustaining economy simulator like EVE was. This game simply included activities as a form of choice entertainment, not to justify an overall goal in the game itself... which is why some feel it's "grindy" or lacks a "narrative" to follow.

Over the years I've come to accept that it was designed as a big bucket of "things to do"- and quit looking for an actual story to follow.

I create my own as I go. *shrugs*

Please Sir, can I/we have some more...

Gruel.

I agree with the OP, I'm afraid.

I was hoping for new activities rather than just new toys.
Maybe we could have had prospecting missions, to find specific deposits in a specific sector of space, and then missions to mine that deposit and missions to protect other NPCs in the same place etc.
As it turns out, that sort of stuff would have tied-in quite well with the changes to exploration too.

I guess the long-term popularity of mining will depend on whether it can compete with cargo and passenger missions for earning credits.
If it can't, it'll remain the preserve of people who just do it for fun, rather than for any good reason.

0 passenger missions done yet, 0 passenger cabins bought yet. No everyone wants max profits.

Never said I "agree" with Frontier's design premise in regard to activities... just stating the facts.

But, by all means, continuing emptying your clip if it makes you feel better to paint me as a target of hostility.

No probs, if you don't like mining then go back to your boring and tedious combat.

Some of us love mining and have been doing it for years and are desperately waiting for this update because miners and explorers have to beg to get table scraps whilst 99% of updates/new stuff are for the pew pew gang.

Personally I'm really excited by the new mining update and cannot wait to get stuck in.

Seems like we have new toys, and yet nothing much new to play with... Boo

Tell me I'm wrong, but I'm 100% positive I have seen missions like "Mine 218 tons of Lepedolite" or "Mine 2116 tons of Water". Very specific missions, for very specific resources.
Granted, I've never seen "Mine 1100 tons of cinnamon from the rings of Uranus" as a mission - and I hope and pray I never do, but that's beside the point. Being told where to mine a resource, well... that's just kind of lame. Shouldn't matter where it comes from, as long as it comes from somewhere.

With the new mission system giving you the ability to make partial deliveries on materials, you can take mining missions of different types and basically strip mine and deposit until eventually, you complete the mission.

A sensible answer. This is not the thread for you! This is an eve-of-beta-last-chance-whine thread.

And if FD did provide new content for mining, like surface mining or whatever, the OP would still complain - cos that is all he does. Who remembers his epic rant on how the new FSS and DSS rendered all small ships useless for exploration as they needed more module space ….

One thing I'm missing from the whole Mining Hotspots :

- "Unobtanium" : new and extremely rare Ores/Alloys/SciFi Mats in Deep Space

Sure folks will go Exploring for those Platinum/Painite/Low Temp Diamond Hotspots.
But what about new shiny stuff? Iridium 77? Radioactive Isotopes? Gemstones anyone?

Other than that - I'm still badly missing Planetary Mining. IMHO that's a no-brainer since Horizons release and should have belonged into any Mining Update.

Mining has always been incredibly boring for me, this new mechanic will not change that. To me it seems almost like real work, something I don’t want in a video game.

The boom thing will become mundane after a while I'm sure, but the new DSS probe mechanism that allows players to identify mining hotspots gives more agency to the player & I like that. I'm not a good enough miner to be concerned about how higher yields are achieved, I would just want to fill my hold faster & chuck less waste away. My main gripe with it was finding the rocks with the right stuff in them & the new system looks like it will address that.

I'd prefer to make an informed decision rather than trial and error every time.

Wait, are mining lasers still a thing after the update? I thought they were being replaced with a new tool that mined at surface level. Or is it only for special asteroids and lasers are for boring old style rocks?
