After blowing up rocks gets boring....

It doesn't seem that mining has any meaningful impact on the game, nor any unique repercussions or possibility of varied outcomes from what you do. It's funny that we got a retooling of the BGS, but every change of any significance is around combat. Everything other than combat is just trading with extra steps. I hope that chapter 4 is not the last we'll see of Frontier's enhancement of non-combat activities, and I hope we'll see further development of the BGS soon.

Wait, are mining lasers still a thing after the update? I thought they were being replaced with a new tool that mined at surface level. Or is it only for special asteroids and lasers are for boring old style rocks?

The existing way of mining will still be available. Wish I could say the same about exploration ;)

Yes.

And so are mining lances. Remember those?

I don't think FDev do. [sad]

Unless there are more Jaques type events, deep in the black, a broken Station found & in need of many, many mining materials to get each module back on line, then I can't really see myself doing any mining past the Beta.

Once the novelty of the 'eyecandy' effects have worn off, it seems as though a player will still be able to mine the exact same materials from a rock.....only in greater volume.

Nothing to entice me, as a non-miner, into the mining profession.

It's all about getting that Painite more efficiently.

This.

Funny thing, there's another thread complaining about lack of ships with enough slots and hardpoints for mining. And a thread here complaining that it will get old fast. Well, the old mining system did get old fast, becuase there weren't enough choices to be made, approaches to be refined, skills to be learned and too much RNG.

Maybe Mining will be a skill thats too easy to master (we shall see), but learning, improving, repeating and mastering a skill is something I find very enjoyable. I think games in general are based on this premise, no?

Something along this lines is surely coming. Something more mundane like a Mining CG certainly, but also some bigger end to work towards, through mining.

That, to those predisposed to the idea, sounds only like a very long trip of grinding.

Geesh No!....not another one week mining CG with low levels of achievement. Use ALL the new methods introduced, from the Codex, through Explorations, maybe even Squadrons, to Mining.

Something different!!

Aye, it's like I was saying elsewhere.

Mining has always been on the fringe.

Combat is pretty core to the game.
The trading role is leveraged heavily via CGs.
Exploration (of various forms) is about discovery, seeing new things.

And mining is just this extra thing bolted on, it's like the 3rd wheel on a date.

The only reason most people ever mine is because they had to unlock Selene Jean(?).

It needs better integration into the game somehow, it needs to tie in to wider ED, there should be reasons to do it.

While the new mining may be fun for a bit, without some motivation to mine you can just see it becoming something the majority of people never do.

While exploring can you go out blowing up rocks for fun, or does it requre all sorts of equipment on the ship?

I'm struggling to see how I can do the DWE2 trip in my 'Conda, fitting in the current mining modules as well.

The new method will probably require even more slots for modules.

The new mining system is welcomed, though I'm not so excited.

After we have blown up a few rocks and they go kaboom, what reason is there still to mine lesser value resources?

Is there a link into the missions system, why bother filling up a hold with Rutile?

Where is the real depth here, can anyone see?

just try it, then have a moan perhaps?

The new scanner is a utility mount, and as I assume the your DWE2 build will have both the exploration scanners anyway, you wont need more modules than were needed for the old mining approach.

Each time a ship is destroyed and a new one is created, be it player or NPC, it should cost the sector it was created in Resources.
This should be reflected in the Markets especially for Mined materials.
Because this doesn't happen it makes everything pointless except for credits.

Until Frontier grow some balls and let what happens effect the Bubble dynamically its all just an arcade game about credits.

Sad but true.
