AI Copilot System ChatGPT style for Immersive Gameplay

Possibly the OP is "new" here and is of the opinion there's really something to "win" ? 🤔🤷‍♂️ Especially when it gets automated...
If you hover (on the PC) over their icon, you can see when they joined the forum (yesterday) and how many posts they submitted (1). You, on the other hand, have been here for almost ten years (a few weeks to go for the anniversary - whare's the party?) and posted over 2,000 messages.

That's not actually the worst thing, if it really only concerns the input. With those LLM chatbots the issue is more the output, because it is completely unreliable, while sounding absolutely convincing at the same time - they are LLMs after all.

I take well catered stuff I have to learn to engage with like the HCS stuff over a sophisticated chat bot that makes up its answer or pulls it from completely unreliable web sources any day of the week.
It is programmed to only respond in the context and lore of Elite. Even if you try it to go out of character, it won't. (Not sure why you'd want to, but still).

Again, it's an early proof of concept for now and it works pretty well in that regard. It can't really do much at this stage.

I wanted to suggest an idea that could bring a whole new level of immersion to Elite Dangerous: an AI powered ship copilot using something like ChatGPT.
That isn’t going to go down well.
Imagine being able to go AFK on a trip to Beagle Point and have your onboard AI handle fuel scooping, jump planning, even logging discoveries all while talking with you like a real copilot.
an actual learning AI that responds dynamically to your journey would be next level.
That would indeed be next level boredom, I bought this game so that I could actively play not to sit back and watch something else play it for me. There is a case for limited availability automation for those with disabilities but not for those too lazy or too time poor to play.
It could:
Handle neutron boosting and route corrections
No autopilots.
Log your flight and discoveries
Lots of perfectly good third party software to do this already.
Provide real-time combat feedback
But do we really want some pundit distracting us in a fight?
Have customizable personalities
Given the challenging tasks below it would need this.
Give you that “living ship” feeling
You could play solo, but never feel alone. and it would help out with the "space madness"
Or make it much much worse.
I hope the devs consider it as a future immersion feature or experimental mod integration. I know a lot of us long range explorers and RP folks would LOVE this.
o7 Commanders.
Most of it sounds like something they have already considered and rejected, adding the latest software buzz AI to the automation is unlikely to get it added to the game or allowed by the EULA.

this was just a concept I had when I went to bathroom while my game was running lmao. I just thought it be cool to talk to your ship like HAL 9000 type

I believe that with Voice Attack and some HCS(?) voice packs we can already talk to and be talked at by our ships.
We can, but it's all pre-recorded phrases and also they only react to specific phrases you need to learn.
I love VA and the HCS team does absolutely fantastic job! But after 10 years and a few thousand hours it does get a bit old tbh.

A well programmed, in-context LLM based copilot could really be the next step in that regard.

I'm sorry Dave, I can't do this.

Personally, I can live with voice activated UIs if either I don't know the menu structure or where to find the corresponding button or I can't spend the time looking for them (like when driving a car), and reaction time is less critical.
Otherwise, especially if reaction time gets critical, I fnd it much faster to slam down on a button than to ask my voice assistant whether it would give a couple more pips to the shields. I even switched off most of the existing voice prompts - I don't need my ship to tell me it''s getting hot, I can see the smoke already.

As for using LLMs (no, I won't call them AI because they aren't) - yes, they can give an illusion of depth. But they either would (state of the now) require an online connection and payment to the LLM operator (once you get beyond the limited "free" access) or a reasonably powerful modell running locally on your machine, which is (in most cases) already struggling with ED as it is right now.

But by all means - go ahead with your idea. I'm an old fart with a lot of stuck ideas, and I love to be proven wrong.

Oh, and BTW - you shouldn't lleave the game running while going to the bathroom, ED has no "pause" mode. This sort of thing has been the cause of many rebuy screens. If When it happens to you, keep in mind that you can retrace what happened from your CMDR's logs, which are easier to read through one of the tird party apps like EDDiscovery .

Yeah I'm feeling a coach and horses being driven through both the Code of Conduct and the EULA.
Good luck OP, enjoy the ride!

EDIT for clarity - comments addressed to OP not whatever rootsrat is up to which I've every confidence is 100% pukka 😇
I would never support actual botting and full automation mate :) I actually like playing Elite.
An immersive ship assistant that responds to me and the ability to feel a bit like in Star Trek though? Love it!

Am I too lame in my disappointment that all the doors are not 'Glad to be of service'? - that wouldn't get old fast :ROFLMAO:
I don't want to have to persuade the express lift to return me to my hangar in the case the station/megaship is going to be under attack. Not unless we get heavy ordnance to deploy against the manufacturer's headquarters.

That's as far as I read before my brain said "no effen way". No to all AI , everywhere in the whole world. Go read the latest studies done, college students in harvard who can't read and comprehend, humans IQ's dropping over the course of 6 mos, the demise of the third cortex, which is already in decline because of self centered focus on how someone feels rather than intelligence and then forming a feeling based in reality.

I mean ... automation aside. I am very anti AI for most things. And I don't particularly want ChatGPT in my cockpit .... however .....
As a VR ED player, I can see some use case scenarios where AI would be very helpful and enhance gameplay dramatically, if implemented in a restricted fashion.

One specific example would be connecting the Inara knowledge base to my cockpit. Everyone swears by Inara as the "must have open when you're playing" bible. However when playing in VR is is entirely impractical to keep taking my head set on/off to reference it. An Inara AI bot would be fantastic in terms of "Inara, where is the nearest whatever to me right now ..." etc.

I can see how this would make flying the ship a next level experience. It would certainly save me a lot of awkward headset and keyboard fumbling.

It's in the works (not by FDEV, it's a fan project). I have been testing it and the early proof of concept looks promising :)

Not sure if the developer would like me to say anything more about, so I won't, but yeah, it's being worked on :)
I've tried it and it is nice to have some chatter, though I've grown accustomed to listen to podcasts/YT vids in the background while playing Elite (exploration), so it had to go.

It would be like talking an annoying friend with you , or partner that just talks about ANYTHING , i just listen to Audio Books , I'm doing LOTR ( again ) , they are on YTube to find =-)
