Welp, i guess we will have to wait for the latest CG to finish before we actuality progress.
hello. just a quick question. So i joined the community goal as i have been scanning for 2-3 days now. i went back to the system that we got the mission and by mistake i gave the mission that the enginner gave us and i got the money for the 8 succesfull scans i did. i went back to the allien ruins and i dont get the failed scan messages any more, only the data types after scanning. is there any way to get the mission again?
Has anybody else noticed that the ruins are quiet today, they no longer "sing". however if you go above 4km, on any of the systems bodies you here you hear the "singing". One notable observation Merope is at a zinith of 90 degrees on the opposite side of the planet, ie hover above the ruins at select Merope your facing straight down.
The behaviour for solo sounds correct, but the open situation sounds like it's revealing more than it should. We'll look into it, but I don't think you're missing anything that should be able to access.

Thats somewhat an effect from the sound-generation, when alot of loud noises from your ship/srv, other subtle sounds are lowered.
If you sit still, make little noise, turn of equipment, you will hear it better again.
I like this expression, "the illusion of progress", that sums up my feelings exactly. Not player driven progress, but breadcrumbs laid out by Frontier. The ruins were never solvable until Frontier implemented a mission and a CG at Ram Tah's. The Aliens were never out there to find until Frontier turned a switch on to make them hyperdict us all over the Pleiades region. The beacon stations were never findable until Frontier gave us a CG and beacons to tell us exactly where to look.

And I understand that it probably has to be like this in Elite because the players really don't have the proper tools in game to make progress any other way. Our scanners don't tell us if there are man made signatures detected on the planet, so all of those people searching throughout the Rift for all of this time had practically no chance at all of finding surface bases on their own. Our scanners don't tell us if artificial structures are detected on the planet surface, so there is no way at all to tell if a planet might possibly have alien ruins on them by simply searching systems. The alien crash sites and barnacles didn't lead us to a region of space where we could discover that hyperdictions occur, Frontier just turned them on one day in a well trafficked area of space so we could start experiencing them. It's the lack of tools in game that could allow players to make natural and honest progression on things like these that, in the end, require Frontier to spoonfeed us little bits of progression, because we have no way to facilitate it on our own in game.
The illusion of progress. Don't get me wrong, I like the story side of Elite and I do my best to take part in it all and contribute, but I do feel that it would be very nice if we had ways to make progress on our own, to discover new things by effort and gameplay rather than always waiting for Frontier to tell us via game mechanics where to look next. A lot of players do make finds and discoveries by brute force Mk I Eyeball searching combined with a whole lot of luck, but I wish we had more ways to actually explore and discover things on our own too, without the breadcrumbs being laid down for us.
I've been thinking on this for a while, and I thought I'd share.
If FD wants to add planetary searches and content we will need better tools for the job. Imagine for a second somebody comes with a second location for the ruins, located in a 5.000km radius planet, but nobody knows the coordinates. We could have 1000 commanders searching the area and we will most likely miss it. Right now even simple navigation is difficult, we don't even have any kind of navigational chart or a bearing lock for straight line flight. Right now I'm at Synuefe trying to fly straight and I will probably end up kilometers from my intended target.
We need better scanners too. Scanners that offer geological detailed comopostion shown on the surface map of a planet, geologic activity POI's, maybe even anomaly signals... things like that. Not the "X marks the spot" sort of thing, but maybe something to point us in the general direction of the actual content. Maybe even some infrared or heat map filters on our hud for low altitude flight... You know,20173303 stuff
I'm all for wild exploration, but sometimes I feel I'm flying a downgraded Spitfire in space. And I think this will improve pure exploration too.
Not a rant, I actually like things the way they are, but everything can be improved.
Sorry for the offtopic, just sharing some thoughts.
Or both. We can solve the questions if we capable, and turned on if we fail to do before deadline. Think on it as a race against time. The more, and faster we solve before deadline, the better prepared we can be before the next major story event.
So everyone remembers that there's something inside the relics right? (Can't remember who posted it originally, and it'll be buried so far back in the threads I'm not going to try and find it!)
Anyway, I thought I'd take a look at it last night and bring it back up for the group as I'm sure quite a few people will have missed it and I don't remember any real follow up on it in the first place.
This probably* doesn't lead anywhere, but who knows. There's a possible hint about "what's inside", and I brought this up at the time but it never went anywhere:

Anyway, the possible hint is:
"It is beautiful to behold, but beyond that - what secret does it contain?"
It's from the market description of the relic, see: http://i.imgur.com/bv3kfk7.jpg
So as far as I can tell it contains an icosahedron which in turn has another shape inside it. The other shape could be a sphere/spheroid or a polyhedron with a large number of sides.
Pics or it didn't happen and all that... Enjoy!

*ok, almost certainly!
The problem, even if there is still a puzzle to solve in the ruins, we now have a front page with probably a high level of false information due to open/pg not working as intended, not just one red herring, but a whole damn school of them.
