Am I the only one who hates the look of most ships in this game?

They just seem dull imo. Some of them are good looking , like the luxury ships . But most of the ships are ugly. And not a GOOD ugly (industrial ships like in the alien universe)

For example the sidewinder. Its boring . Its shape makes no sense. and it seems like it was imported from a top down bullet hell game.

It seems like most of the ships were designed around the fact they have to fit into the pizza slot of starports.

Star citizen has the right Idea i think.

I feel the opposite. I don't like most of the star citizen ship designs. Specifically because they look fragile and not like they are up to deep space exploration or combat. Just my personal feelings though - is obvious lots of hard work goes into them.

I really don't care for the majority of SC's ships, personally. Most look like they're about to turn into one Michael Bay's Transformers. They're covered with so many extraneous fins and chunky pieces. I also don't like how practically the whole ship tends be usable space that you can walk in/lay down in-- like mobile homes with rockets attached to the outside. A good portion of the ship should be inaccessible because it's just filled with... ship.

I guess the ''right idea'' for you is to make ships that look like they could be from anything.
What does a star citizen ship look like? I can't tell.

I see a lot of space games where you can very clearly see the intentions of the designers, for example there's that one now that has very NASA-ish spaceships, you can almost see how they have evolved from 1900's rocket ships, but the ships in Star Citizen, they look like more detailed versions of what I used to draw when I was a kid. Everyone would look at it and say ''what kind of aircraft is that?'' and I would get angry because they couldn't see that it was a spaceship...

the ship look like they were designed to fit through the toaster slot because it makes sense for them to be able to enter the stations, and to be sturdy and practical which means no weird bits sticking in some weird direction (see your SC shot ... what ARE all those things?). Also : the look depends on the manufacturer. Delacy is definitely into flatt'ish ships (snakehead-like ...figures), Core Dynamics is more into the classic spaceship design with the Eagle and the Dropship. Zorgon Peterson And Lakon have an obviously pragmatic design. They are the bulldozer and truck builder of the Elite Universe. They're NOT into pretty! Saud Kruger and Gutamaya are the luxury car designers. their ship's main task is too look good ... like ... incredibly good looking good. They don't need to read (or fly) well .

So the answer to your titular question is : yes :p

Totally agree. SC ships remind me of the Teladi ships in X3 - seems like they were cobbled together out of spare parts. I always preferred the sleek look of the Paranid ships, or the organic look of the X2 Boron ships.

ED ships - I guess they were trying to replicate the look of the ships from the previous games, and I think they did a decent job with most of them, altho I do agree the Sidewinder is just ugly.

I guess i was just spoiled because my first space game was earth and beyond :p

I think the ships look a bit plain, yes they're similar to the ones we saw in Elite in the 80's but at some point perhaps we can see some more organic looking ships. If/when the Thargoids arrive they'll add a bit of colour to the proceedings.

It would be cool to see massive, industrial / mining barges - lots of detail, showing that they are working ships covered corrosion and general wear and tear (Everything seems brand new in ED). Passenger liners plying routes between systems and perhaps holidays around a planet etc. Perhaps ships that have been rigged together...too many to mention but it would be good if they moved away from the clean lines and shiney surfaces.

Spacecraft don't need to be streamlined like aircraft but the do need to be able to brush off space dust and micometorites.

Bits sticking out might look good but would not last long before they get punctured, gouged, scrapped or torn off. As we don't have deflector shields, a wedge shape works best.
