Am I the only person NOT playing with a TrackIr or OR?

Nope, nothing extra or special. Playing on my regular ole computer, using a 360 gamepad and nothing else. I bought a HOTAS, absolutely hated it, so will never ever buy anything extra for any game again...

i'll uh... help you out giving that HOTAS a new home.

Mouse and keyboard currently w/o any i.r - i do fine but have to over-rely on gimballed weapons.

Oculus Rift = Visiting stars yourself
Monitor = Viewing the gopro footage of someone visiting the stars

Best way to explain it really. I don't use the rift all the time though, mostly for exploring.

If you cant afford track ir etc have you tried making /buying an EDtracker

If you haven't heard of an ED tracker the go have a look online.

Brumster 100's youtube vids are a must. I saw them and thought "I want one of those"

I put one together myself and found it Awesome.

There are no issues with light levels and you don't need to wear a hat.

I was so impressed I kept my notes and posted them just in case they help anyone else.

I've built 3 now (for family/friends) using my notes. All have worked first time and are still going strong.

Every time I have made one, I used the more expensive 9150 chip, but they still come in at under £20

I use joystick, keyboard and mouse, with the headlook on the mouse. Makes it easy to look around, I have left button set to centre the view and the right button to turn headlook on and off so I can look at menus in station. Got throttle on the mouse wheel too, it's useful in combat.

I have TrackIR but I tend to sit so rigidly still with it on that it becomes uncomfortable, so I rarely use it. The joystick hat pan around is good enough.

I have a hotkey on my HOTAS to quickly enable/disable head tracking. I only switch it on in combat, or during docking.

Also, set a larger dead zone on the head tracking so you can move your head more before the view changes.

Anyone who is playing this game without HOTAS and head tracking is missing out somewhat - they were both game changers for me.

I literally could not play ED without my TrackIR. You can take away my HOTAS before you take away my headtracking.

Actually don't take either, that wouldn't be nice.

It seems like every video I see of people playing ED has them looking around in the cockpit with a TrackIR (or similar).
Since I am poor and "Married with Children", I wonder if I'm missing out on much, or whether I am handicapped in some way while playing for not having one...?
Is it worth the cost?

I've got some savings which I am holding onto for the Consumer release of OR (I ally debated whether to get the DK, then the DK2, but decided it would be best to wait for the actual thing instead).
Is there any point getting a TrackIR if I'm going to eventually get a Rift?

Yes! ;)

And you can't use the cost as an excuse when we have the amazing EDTracker guys on here! ;)

I use a gamepad, keyboard and mouse. Don't use track IR.

Would be more immersive if I could use more screens (e.g. as ingame MFDs), that's my biggest issue.

I seldom "look around", but when I do, it's with the mouse. Everything important is on the radar anyway. Still, would be nice to have more cams around the ship to map to different monitors (e.g. bottom or top cam for docking/undocking to see obstacles)

I also have a X-52 Pro, but it is simply ineffective with E:D. The ships are so slow that I don't need the extra precision of a flight stick, and it just takes up space.

Using an X-52 Pro HOTAS, an ED tracker and waiting for the release of the Oculus consumer version. Once I have that, I'll be getting an X-55 HOTAS.

An update on this now - I found my old PS3 Eye camera and discovered the Free FaceTrackNOIR jobby-wotsit.

I set it all up and gave it a go. Works great overall and there's no real problem with it, but I think it's probably not for me in the end.
Some minor annoyances:
- If you get an itch on your face and scratch it, you end up looking up at the ceiling for ages.
- If you take a sip of coffee, you end up looking up at the ceiling for ages.
- If you keep the "deadzone" in the middle, there's a really jarring pause as you look from one side of the ship to the other
- The face recognition works ok, but there is a fair amount of noticeable lag at times

It's definitely worth a try if you have an Eye though (and looking around the space stations was fun) - not to mention, it was free, so nothing lost there. :)

Iv not invested in one either. I have however invested in CH Products Throttle and Stick, which both have 8 point hats on them, which i have mapped to the head look. It is not perfect, but it does work when I need to look around.

I borrowed an OR, used it exclusively with ED for three weeks and then had to give it back. I'm in mourning. It's just not the same (even my 4k monitor feels a step back). I know the CV is on the horizon, but I don't feel I can hold out.

The only thing TrackIR has as an advantage over OR in my opinion is the ability to use the keyboard for text chat and typing in nav destinations. Every other function I need I have mapped to the HOTAS or works with the mouse.

I play with PS3eye Freetrack (3 IR led slapped to headphones) which cost me something like 10$ including camera (used) and 3D passive monitor. Fun fun fun
Cockpits in 3D are so awesome.

The patch on me eye prevents me from havin' one of these, me hearties, arr. Plus the hook is making it difficult to hit the selfie cam keys.

May have to stop RP'ing the Pirate role so hard, eh?

:)
