Engineers Amateurs

Irony on

Hey Frontier, where did you find these chaps that call themselves engineer?

Don't you know that Engineer is the new cowboy?
It misses me off that in some countries (mine included) Maintenance Engineers are thought of as janitors. Not that there is anything wrong with being a janitor. At all, at all.

As I understand it, in beta, you were not guaranteed a better unit because of the variation, however I am sure in one of the news letters Braben stated that one of the things they were changing for release was that each upgrade would always be better.

I have not yet done a tier two upgrade in the released version to say one way or the other, but my assumption was that this has been fixed.

Nope, not my xp. Don't know what was said before or promised, but in current 2.1' just yesterday in fact, finally did my first few sets of FSD improvements (spent first week just ranking up felicity to level 4 and of course scouring the universe for yttrium)

skipped rank 1 and 2 so don't know about those, but rolled a nice level 3 fsd with about 20% improvement.
then made first leve 4 and got worse stats then the prior level 3
two more rolls and got lucky and rolled a nice 29% level 4 fsd.

i stopped there because out of yttrium and I figure 29% out of 35% max is good enough. Am afraid if I try level 4 again I will just get lower rolls so saving up for eventual level 5 attempt.

Here we go again !

My thoughts exactly.

They should have never been called Engineers. They are not engineers. They are tinkerers. The actual defnition of Engineer I had in my signature put the argument to bed. Part of the process of engineering is preparing and predicting the outcome and accounting for its own shortcomings.

Be careful with that, my lvl5 roll came out worse than my lvl4. Took a little more hunting for mats but I got it better in the end.

:D

WOW we are sore on the forums today. I don't know if you can get a worse upgrade? I was under the impression that each step would always be better, but by how much would vary. If I am wrong then, I would agree with you on this point.

My point is not saying that it should be OK to get a downgrade.....but more to that fact of people moaning about the variation. I for one think it is a good idea as long as each step is an improvement, maybe it needs some refinement, but other than that it is fine.

Love the fact you assume my argument - I only mentioned the fact it was realistic to show that the slightly random effect was quite normal, I do appreciate this is a game, I suggest you should as well and get over the fact you need to find resources to craft with.

Best result for a grade 2 upgrade is 14%. The worst result for a grade 4 is 11%
So it is possible to go from a grade 2 to a grade 4 and end up worse than you started. The minimal values obviously need to be adjusted
