An easy way to get rid of a dormant bounty

I got a 7 days bounty during the Run CG. I was in an Haz Res and both my SLF and I (in a Cutter) were busy firing at a wanted ship (already scanned and confirmed wanted) when all of the sudden I see the dreadful WANTED alert on screen, for having killed someone I shouldn't have (I was not wanted prior). Oh well...
I stayed in, finished killing a few more NPCs, then jumped to a neighboring system to reload, repair and refuel. I called my iCourier there, then flew back to the RUN CG station, docked in silent mode and exited the station again. Waited a good 20 minutes for NPC police to scan me outside the station but nothing. Next I went into supercruise, hoping to get interdicted...nothing. Went back to the same station, loaded the iCourier with some cargo and tried getting scanned while exiting...nope. Back into SC with my cargo and I finally got interdicted by an NPC. Uh oh...he wants my cargo now but he didn't detect my bounty! This could be a problem because if I get killed without the bounty being detected first, it might end up not being removed (that was my worry, not sure if that's the case).

My iCourier is built for speed so, no weapons. I escape back in SC only to be repeatedly interdicted by the same NPC. Tired of this, I submit one more time and let him have some of my cargo. I go back to SC and he interdicts me again; he wants more! "This time I'll just unload it all and be on my merry way", or so I thought. I leave the extortion site and he interdicts me again! But my cargo is empty? I keep escaping the interdiction, all the way to an High Res (sometimes submitting and then escaping, other times just fighting the interdiction). I make it to the High Res and drop out. Guess what? He is right there behind me, still wanting my empty cargo ("Drop whatever tonnage and this can end", he keeps saying).

"Alright, I'm gonna fly to the Police, they'll see him firing at me and they will kill him for me", was my 'brilliant' idea of the day. As I approach the police, I'm getting absolutely blastered by this pirate sidewinder now. I'm right in front of the police and the police doesn't care at all! Earlier, while boosting towards the police, another NPC had began scanning me. "Don't think we cannot see your dirty deeds" pops up on my screen. Yeah! Finally I got someone to recognize my bounty! But wait, now I'll have two NPCs firing at me, one that wants my empty cargo and another one that wants to collect the bounty on my head. I must make sure that the bounty hunter kills me (again, I was afraid that if the pirate killed me, the bounty wouldn't go away).

I took my iCourier as close as possible to the Anaconda police and started flying in close formation with it, on the opposite side of the pirate. The pirate was still firing at me, as I got closer and closer to the Anaconda. I'm now so close to the underside of that behemoth that I could smell its fumes coming through my AC system. "It's now or never" I thought, as the bounty hunter NPC I boosted away from earlier, had begun closing the gap. My iCourier wouldn't stand a chance with two NPCs firing at me at the same time (pirate and bounty hunter) and the bounty hunter was now in weapons range. Suddenly the moment I was waiting for: the pirate NPC accidentally lands a shot at the police Anaconda! I peel out of formation, as I watch the Anaconda police open up on the pirate sidewinder. He killed him so fast that the other police ships didn't even have the time to engage. Great, now do me, do me! Still nothing from the police...alright, fine, where is that bounty hunter...oh there! I let him shoot me down and I respawn in the Run CG station, clear of the bounty and happy that I can resume bounty hunting without having to wait for 7 days (by which time the CG would have been over).

At 3:06 you can see the moment I became Wanted. You can clearly see that we were both busy firing at another ship when the Wanted alert popped up on-screen. Bug?

Respect for you wanting to get rid of the bounty fully in-character. Unfortunately the NPCs in the game don't play along very well, as you found out. The easiest and quickest way to do it is a bit gamey: 1. switch to a cheap ship, 2. dock at a station controlled by the faction that gave you the bounty, 3. undock, 4. self-destruct (doesn't matter where, you can do it inside the station if you wish). Your bounty should be listed on the rebuy-screen.

About your video: I didn't see anything obvious. There are many scenarios possible but usually in such cases either you or your fighter hit a friendly or unscanned ship by accident and then that ship was killed by the Police or in a collision or it was already at 1% hull when your stray shot hit it.

--edit: Took a closer look at your video. At 2:46 you briefly select the NPC named KIURU, that is the one you get the bounty for at 3:18. But I see nothing going wrong. KIURU is in your vicinity all the time while it gets hammered by other ships until it blows up. If it was a stray shot you should have gotten an assault bounty for 400cr or so first. Maybe this message can be delayed if the game is busy? You get a bounty of 9465cr but a murder bounty is 9000cr so apparently you already had a 465cr bounty at that point. These cases are tricky sometimes...

If you have trouble being scanned to lose the dormant bounty i can suggest dropping into a nav beacon, these usually have loads of bounty hunters who will happily clear that dormant bounty for you.

Hey Krieger, thanks for the info. Will keep that in mind for the next time.
I opened a ticket with FD and they suggested that it's possible I got hit (impacted) by KIURU at 3:03.
I will open a support ticket and see if I can relay some more useful info (ie logs) that can help with the suicide-scan bug (not 100% sure that's what it was though)

And yes, Capt Ho Chi Minge, Nav Beacon sounds good. I went to the High Res for the same reason but maybe the Nav Beacon is even better.

As soon as you get the "wanted" reactivated, you can kill yourself. It doesn't matter who kills you as long as you took off from the right station.

The investigation is over :) Here is the report (thank you CMDR Vega)

"Thanks for your message regarding this problem.

I have tracked down the event in the logs, the death that triggered this bounty was marked as unexpected event. It is likely that a ship was destroyed due to a glitch and the game matched this crime to your account as a best guess. This is currently under review.

The logs entries that track 'unexpected' events are in fact part of this investigation.

I'm sorry this has happened but it should be fairly rare and not likely to reappear.

Best regards,

Thanks for sharing the report. Interesting that the game sometimes makea a guess to assign a murder to someone. I'm glad somputers don't replace judges yet. ;)

The bounty will remain dormant until the time expires, or it is reactivated by you getting another one. Dormant bounties aren't activated by scans.

I disagree, though a dormant bounties when scanned out side the system is was originally issued isn't available to any one when scanned, it is still avilable and will resort back to a bounty when scanned in the system it was originally issued. Thus one must avoid the system that issued it for the duration of the bounty and even afterwards because a dormat bounty time line is that of the bounty it resorted from. Hence a one day bounty means one must avoid the system for two days.

I keep a stripped down Winder for just that purpose, rebuy is only 707 cr's. Even if I have to ship it some where in the bubble, it's still cheaper than buying one when needed.

OP. You need to go to a NavPoint or a REZ site and get scanned by the cops in the system you're wanted in.

System Authority around the space stations don't really care about your wanted status. They're more like Customs Agents and scan you with a Manifest Scanner. They're more interested in illicit cargo.

System Authority ships in a NavPoint and REZ sites are much more interested in your wanted status as they are the ones who use the KWS scanners when they scan you.
