PvP An Investigation Into Frontier's Actions on Combat Logging, Part 2

My dear Sole - I'll happily sit here and talk networking with you for, erm, shall we say, until the heat death of the universe.

I'm a mainframe hardware engineer :D

I can build RS485 hubs out of my belly button fluff.

And my dad is rich.

Do you make video games? if not then my point stand.

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...-against-combat-logging?p=6272467#post6272467

I have posted the above in suggestions, regarding the idea of a network check for Open.

I would appreciate people read it, and feel free to post, be it praise or criticism. Just keep it constructive & civil.

I looked at it, lots of words not many interesting ideas like :

''I suggest FD implements a "minimum network requirement" for Open.'' followed by ''I will not get into the details of how it could work''

What does that even mean?

That doesn't really help the combat logging issue.

If you want to lay out better solutions you need to look at other games with similar issues as a reference point.

I never said it would "stop" combat logging.

What I hope it could do, (I may be wrong), is that it might be able to give FD strength, in that people might have one less excuse to worry about.

"I won't get into the details." I humbly apologise for not being a network engineer. Would you rather I go try-hard and spout a load of jargon that I clearly don't understand?

I appreciate my idea is a vague one. But I made it clear that it's a vague one. I'm sure this is the bit where you're going to tell me where I should shut up, seeing as you're so hostile to everyone, including, in this case, someone who is actually on your side about combat logging.

Save yourself the trouble, and block me, if that's the case. I will not be offended.

How is being critical of your suggestion now deemed hostile, you asked us to look at it and give you feedback.

You are right. I apologise.

But you do have to bear in mind that I'm not a technical expert. I simply cannot give the exact details on what processes a base idea would need to work in real terms.

I'm sorry but I don't have "connection issues"...

Suggesting that the game crashes frequently because of anything I'm doing is quite frankly absurd.
How then would you describe the fact that I rarely, if ever, experience these crashes you talk about? In the last month of playing the game I have experienced exactly two disconnects/crashes.
Please explain to me how such a behaviour of a game can assertively be blamed on the game itself. If there was indeed an inherent problem with the game, or its networking, would we not both be experiencing the same problems? Asserting otherwise would patently, to use your own words, be absurd.

You don't need to be a technical expert with a 7 year degree in computer engineering to discuss potential solutions to a problem in a video game. That's probably why I responded that way to asp explorer, I apologize if I may sound hostile but I don't care about your boring credentials in a debate. The argument from authority - i.e. I am an engineer I know more than you do, isn't a good one.

Someone has to stand up to experts!

But nice of you to link a video from the pseudo-intellectual hack known as Ben Shapiro to show where you stand.

What is the point of contesting? We're all doomed!

And this gave me a good giggle :D

Just wait until you've been called as an expert witness ;)

What are you trying to say Jason? :D It's escaped you twice!

Now, please sit down and have a nice cup of tea and a biscuit, and tell us all how you feel!

The game is buggy and crashes frequently. Whether you experience those specific bugs or not is irrelevant. You are a sample size of one. There are many threads and posts on these forums, many bug reports and all sorts of other evidence of these bugs, crashes and D/Cs existing for many players.

If you think that someone's internet "connection" explains game bugs like the ones that are frequently reported on these forums then I really don't know what else to say.

That is fairly simply solved. Post your modem / gateway / router and firmware stations, any "exotics" like 10Gb SFP+ to twisted pair or AUI's going to buried copper complexed to multiple BNC's :)

We probably can't help you with internet problems, but we can absolutely crush your LAN ones :D

Huh. I go to the pub for a bit and the thread suddenly gets fun.

Sole: Do not presume to lecture Asp on networking. He knows more than I do, and that's actually impressive. (edit: well, at least as much. I remember Perl controllers and Twinax)

Asp: Do not presume this is a purely networking issue...

I chuckled, a little bit.

Nobody is lecturing anybody about networking here, we are talking about a video game.

You clearly missed the point.

We are getting off-topic.

So how then, do you suppose frames turn into packets?

How can individual computers playing the same game, all over the world, talk to each other and manage cohesive performance and gameplay experience?

What is "netcode"?

Huh.

Asp: "My dear Sole - I have pointed it out as clearly as I possibly can. Understand what servers FD use. Understand what they are used for. I can help you no further I'm afraid.

At least I didn't add "Git Gud!" for the lulz "

Sole: "Because P2P is both a topology and an architecture and an infrastructure. It's not a simple "Oh I need to go to Tesco to buy some more P2P". Network much, dude?
You're lucky I replied and please don't talk about thing's you clearly don't know."

You sure about that, Sole?
