An investigation into Frontier's actions on Combat Logging

Down with Reddit and its dramatic self-importance-ranking system in discussion threads!
ftfy :)

You can't upvote yourself, especially not 100+ times ;)

It'll get a lot more dangerous if players cannot disconnect on demand :D

It'd get less dangerous, as the Combat Logging gankers would be quickly rebuyed back to a Sidewinder by the in-game "police" Player Groups.

Unless you're talking about the few CMDRs that Combat Log against NPCs. I'm sure they'd be annoyed

You appear to have misinterpreted the community's voting in that thread, allow me to help.
Mine defaults to 'best' and I read that as the posts that had been voted as the best

I would suggest that's misinterpreting what reddit thinks is implied by that word and not necessarily seeing all the voting, but this way you got to talk down to me which is the modus operandi here I notice... I even said I had it in that order in my post. *sigh*

Best = Hot (the old name for the default view, apologies for the miscommunication). Vote scores are visible next to every post and comment, indicating exactly what the community voted as most important/popular.

I suppose you see what you want to see ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Reddit doesn't hide posts, so all comments and votes are visible (unless removed by mods for rule breaches). In very popular discussions I'll flip between the various sorting methods (best/hot, top, new, controversial) to relatively quickly gauge the opinions of fellow Redditors, but I'll try to read most ED-related comments where possible (on sub-topics that interest me anyway, I'm not one for mining or PvP loadouts).

According to the SDC discord chat, many would like to chat but are banned from the forums.

Gee, I wonder why that might be... /s

There's a reason many folks, myself included, are a bit incredulous at the generally free reign SDC players are given on reddit. The one-or-two fair-mannered members don't make up for the rest.

All CMDRs have free reign on the ED Reddit, to submit and discuss topics and content, as long as they abide by the rules. Posts/comments that breach the rules are removed (pending edit) when spotted or reported. Repeated or severe rule infractions are dealt with via temp/perma bans. Our 10 member modteam consists of 5 non-aligned CMDRs (including myself) and 5 members of Players Groups (2 from Adles Armada).

Specific rules that are frequently enforced are:
  • Follow Reddit's rules – These apply everywhere on the website. Psychological vote manipulation is not allowed.
  • Follow Reddiquette – This is your textbook guide for making first contact with other CMDRs.
  • Be respectful – Treat other CMDRs well to ensure a lasting, peaceful, and productive relationship.
  • No hate speech or inciting conflict – You are free to offer your opinion in the local space-bar respectfully, but comments intended to demean a group, incite conflict, and the pejorative use of slurs are disallowed.
Some Player Groups have either a controversial playstyle or enjoy drama. Banter between the different Groups and playstyles are welcomed, in the same vein that sports fans will joke with fans of their favoured team's opposition - again, as long as they abide by the rules. When Powerplay was popular (relatively speaking) the drama and banter produced between the various Powers' supporters was excellently entertaining. Why should we moderate members of SDC any differently - because they have a controversial playstyle and enjoy drama?

Okay, Brett! Let me just "learn to play" when my Sidewinder gets interdicted by a combat FdL! Let me just ADAPT TO IT!

Wait, what? Nothing I do is going to make a sidewinder competent against an FdL? Okay, I guess I'll just trust the crime and punishment system to handle the player accordingly. Except it won't.

Yeah, no. If you actually played the damn game without a dev account for any meaningful period of time, you wouldn't be making such obviously wrong statements as these. Utterly depressing.

I watched a live stream maybe a month ago with Edd and another FD dev (really sorry, cant remember which one) and they were getting taken out in seconds, inc in the station iirc and getting naff all protection from the game systems.

whilst they were trying to poker face it, it was obvious they were NOT enjoying the interaction... esp when a certain wizard from SDC was own team killing (what a surprise). but still, regardless, the point is, if the devs cant "get gud and learn how to play" when it is their game then what chance is there for the new players?)

I don't care what FD does about Open.

Leave Solo and Private alone.

I really used to hope one day FD would sort out open.... however the longer it goes on the more i am beginning to look at it this way too

1 good thing about this thread... its interesting to be in agreement with a few players i am normally not seeing eye to eye with :)

...the Reddit discussions (on this topic) have the top-ranked 50 or so comment-branches being of the consensus that Cheaters (Combat Loggers) should be punished (to varying degrees), and a proper Crime & Punishment system should be brought in (to punish PKers appropriately).

which is pretty much the same thing being said here... nothing new, we have been saying that largely since before launch. the issue is, from what we have heard, changes to crime and punishment are not happening any time soon... so we have a chicken and egg scenario. as long as we have some players exploiting the system to such a degree that money means nothing, choosing to beat on other players who do not have such riches having zero consequences.... the temptation to combat log is going to remain.

Well, as the main design of player-story interaction is derived from classical pen&paper system, where FD takes the role of the gamemaster, i think sorting out Open asap is crucial, before "winter" arrives.

.... I'm so scared, i'm so gentle. Don't say so terrible world.
I think it's your way of thinking.
Elite dangerous is elite dangerous not Barbie the game. 50% players trying to change this game in game for children. Either the game is "dangerous" or not. If player can disconnect on demand the game is not "dangerous".

I think it was that you managed to be ageist AND sexist in pretty much 1 sentence..... I know kids who are FAR more competitive than I and who would hand my backside to me on a plate... equally i know plenty of adults who could not even land a ship properly.

the funny thing is you are not even right! you bought a game with a PEGI age rating of 7........ one may argue the game is absolutely catered for kids as well as adults... (tho i admit i was surprised it was rated so low)

This dude kinda has a point. QFT.

And the Sidewinder is the obvious extreme example, but the truth is that this is happening in many more other situations. Must I re-link one of the recent "Gank of the year" videos where a Type-9 gets blown up in mere seconds by a couple of missile salvos?

This point is so obvious, i don't even understand why we are talking about it. Of course, there is a massive imbalance if one player spends weeks to engineer a ship for the sole purpose of killing other Cmdrs in slow or weak ships, and another Cmdr who is just doing whatever job he finds fun (trading, mining, ...) and has his ship fitted for that. I doesn't matter if he has some defence, because he will be dead before he even realises what's happening.

This issue is not about chickening out of balanced PvP encounters, but the polar opposite! (And btw, those T9, sidey pilots CL from FDLs are not the cowards in this picture)

I mean.. chaff and try to fly circles around the FDL for as long as possible as your FSD charges?

Wow. It had to happen sometime, but I'm in partial agreement with Obnoxious_Gamer for once. Must be a rare planetary alignment or something?

Yes, players have to take time to learn the systems, and fly the ship, but they should be protected in some way whilst doing that via the security mechanics in core systems. And the disparity between ships, especially with engineers is a tad excessive these days...

So now the sound and fury has died down a bit was a conclusion reached? I'm for Open PvE myself but once we have that (which we won't but I can dream) there seems no reason not to enact both larger penalties for murdering players (outside of Anarchies and CZs) and a longer timer for logging out (I'm not sure if anything can be done about hotkey process killing on the current networking and FD aren't going to rewrite it to client/server).

Haven't flown a dirty drive FDL but I'm pretty sure a standard Sidewinder can outmanuver a standard FDL and if they use gimps they won't be able to touch you.

Problem is in this scenario, that the pilot in the FDL can be a complete noob, but the pilot in the sidey needs to be an ace Elite pilot to even stand a chance of outmanoeuvring the FDL and timing the escape. One hit and it's over.
