An open letter to Frontier

At the very least I believe the ship name shows up in the shipyard and for ship transfers so, if you have more than one Cobra for example (one for racing and one for bounty hunting say) then you can easily tell which is which.

I can do that using Inara, named ship plus last docked location. If you have two ships at the same place of same type, just look at the ship stats on shipyard, you can easily see the difference between your ships and as others have pointed out, no CMDR can see your shipname even after they scan you.

Hi everyone,

There’s been a number of questions from Commanders regarding ship naming and how ship name plates will work so we wanted to give you a little more information about how these features will work when they’re released.

In-game ship naming

When you have named your ship in-game, your ship name will appear in multicrew grouping and in your HUD. In addition to this, in beta 5, when other people scan you, or target you in space they will be able to see your ship name in their UI. This feature will be available for all players of Elite Dangerous (both base game and Horizons players) including Xbox One, upcoming PS4 release and PC Commanders.

Cosmetic Ship Name Plates

The ship name plates will offer an added layer of cosmetic personalisation for Commanders wanting to wear their name with pride, much like paint jobs and other cosmetics currently available in the store.

Name plates will be made available in themed packs. These packs will contain three designs, each of which will be available in three colours: black, white, and grey. This makes a total of 9 nameplates per pack. After purchase, each pack will be available for use across all of your ships (Ship launched fighters and SRVs don’t have name plates) and each pack of 9 variant plates will be coming into store at just £2/€2.5/$3. This means that purchasing one pack of name plates will allow you to use that style across all of your current and future ships, at the same time and rename each individual ship as many times as you like. We believe this flexibility offers Commanders great value and is a great way to help support the continued development of Elite Dangerous.

Thanks!

It looks like our voices were heard

I was just trying to be helpful - you don't want to name your ship? Don't name your ship.

Yet another thread about the matter. But I understood that they don't give a **** about this complain. The whole community of Elite is crying about it...but we will have to pay eventually. Yuks!

Just in case people haven't read Ed's post ...

You only have to pay for the cosmetic nameplate.

It costs £2 for a pack of 9 different themed nameplates (which can be used on ALL your ships).

Other people will be able to see your ship's name in their scan data, even if you don't pay for a nameplate.

We need Teddy Bear Award.
I've seen so many thrown out since they decided on name plates and charging a small fee to display them on ship.
You get extra points if you threaten not to play the game again.

Thank you for the update. Perhaps the rhetoric will settle down.
People that complain about this remind me of the rotten little [redacted] in a toy store screaming their heads off because their parents won't get them the toy they want. The toy that they would play with for an hour then forget about because they are screaming about the next thing they feel they are entitled to.

Those posts are just slightly more common than people complaining about the complainers. Here's some insight into the thought process.

Say there was a basic feature of the game that people had been asking for since launch, like cleaning the smudgy canopy windows of your ship. Since the game launched in 2014, windscreens on the ships, even brand new ones, look like they've been sneezed on a few times and then rubbed with a dirty rag. It's a neat effect, actually, making giving some depth to the cockpit and all, but it just looks nasty. So people have been asking "will we ever be able to lean our windows?"

Then let's say Frontier has heard our demands! Window cleaning will now be a part of 2.3! Windows will become dirty over time, but can be cleaned in the ship repair section like the hull of the ship. The community response is WOOHOO! People are thrilled with the idea until this shows up:

Frontier decides to take a long desired function that many feel should have been included in the game and charge real money for it. It's a purely cosmetic one so it doesn't affect the gameplay in the least, but if you want clean windows so you can see more clearly or your screenshots looks nicer, it's gonna cost you.

Meanwhile, Holo-Me, which is a decidedly more expensive and required much higher development costs and is purely cosmetic is included with the patch.

It just leaves a bad taste in peoples' mouths and reeks of a cash grab aimed at the people who are the biggest fans of the game.

Naming your ship is free!

only displaying the name on your ship costs £££, imo it's simply not needed, do others need to know my ship names? nope, of course not. as long as I can see them, that's all I care about.

If people are so vain they want to show off their name, then sure.. go charge them 'stupid' tax. it doesn't bother me :)

Now that we have official info about ship naming, it highly amuses me that if everyone complaining about FDev being greedy capitalists had spent the same amount of time sweeping floors or flipping burgers, they would have earned the money for the free nameplate they so desperately needed.

I do not see the issue.
Basically here's what happened:

FD was going to release the feature of ship names with a built in pay wall, i.e. you needed to pay for a nameplate livery in order for other people to see your ships name. As stated in the initial 2.3 Beta change log:

Ship Naming
● If it's not our ship and they have no name plates, then we don't know the ship's name.

Sandro Sammarco even repeated how it will work on one of the live streams. Lots of threads popped up from the player base saying, "That's not kosher FD."

And so having gotten caught out on this FD backpedalled:

Except they pretended as if the community had simply misunderstood and phrased the back pedalling as if it was intended to be this way all along:

All's well that ends well of course but the people who called FD to task on this deserve a genuine thank you from everyone else in the community my opinion. It is because of the people that spoke up that you now have a complete ship naming feature in the game compared to what FD wanted to do in the beginning.

You are most welcome :)
