Another Mongoose?

It's been over two years since we got the meerkat, which is still our only mongoose in the game and certainly it was the obvious choice... But how about a second species? Mongooses are quite an iconicgroup of small carnivores so I think we could justify getting a second species.

Personally, I really would love to see the Dwarf Mongoose get added as I have seen them in loads of zoos and the addition of the viewing domes made me think about them more. The main roadblock here is that they are absolutely tiny, like a third the size of meerkats but if they could somehow work (maybe in Walkthrough?) I'd be really happy.

If the Dwarf Mongoose couldn't be worked into the game, I'd still like to see another species as a nice alternative to the meerkat. My top picks would be either the Banded or Yellow Mongoose:

Both are nice. I kinda like the Indian grey mongoose the best, though

Looks different enough from the meerkat. The last 2 that you mentioned look sorta like meerkats, especially the banded mongoose

Hmm, maybe not. I know that mongooses (what's the plural? Mongeese?) we're taken to other countries, most infamously Jamaica. I thought that they could be tamed and kept as pets, so I assumed that they could live in a zoo, but maybe not

I actually chose that species because of Riki Tiki Tavi, the Indian grey mongoose that saves his family from 2 cobras and their offspring. It's a good read, part of Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book, but I forget which one

I wouldn't be surprised if we got another Mongoose, simply to resuse the rig. That sort of work efficiency lends itself to a good bit of animal choices IMO.

on the other hand, like the Giraffe, the Mongoose is just such an iconic zoo staple, that I could see why it would be a one and done situation. They pretty much gotta get them in there even if they don't plan to reuse the rig. It was absolutely baffling how the Meerkat was not picked for base game anyways.

To me the common dwarf mongoose is the obvious choice, extremely common in zoos. Yellow and Banded are other options. You had it right with your initial post imo. All these later suggestions are obscure picks which don't make much sense imo given how prominent the first three you posted are in captivity.

I have personally seen five species of mongoose in zoos - aside from meerkats (by far and away the most common), I have also seen:
  1. Banded mongoose - A larger species than the meerkat, that would suit more grassland-type habitats compared to the more arid meerkat. They should also be able to have interspecies enrichment with the warthog.
  2. Common dwarf mongoose - Probably the 'cutest' of these four species, but as mentioned earlier they are tiny and may not be workable as a habitat species.
  3. Yellow mongoose - The only one of the 'non-social' mongooses that is common in captivity in Europe (although I think they are completely absent, perhaps even illegal, in the USA). They should be able to have interspecies enrichment with the meerkat, as they live in the same place and are often mixed in zoos.
However, I think my personal favourite choice for a new mongoose would be the Western kusimanse - a sociable species of mongoose that, unlike any of the other species mentioned above, is not restricted to open grasslands or deserts. They do live on moist savannahs but also live in dense tropical rainforest. They would add an ideal filler species for the Guinean rainforest (currently represented only by big showstopper animals like the chimp, bongo and pygmy hippo) and have a very different type of enclosure design to either the meerkat or the other mongooses I have mentioned.

There are two reasons for that.
The large indian mongoose simpy never established a stable breeding populations, with most of the zoos that had them having them only for their life span and most holdings dating back over 30 years ago.
The Javan Mongoose meanwhile is on the European Black List, meaning its illegal to import or breed them, so they all just quickly died of and unlike the Racoon and Nutria, who both also live significantly longer, there is no large wild population that can be caught and be put into the zoos instead.

I had forgotten about kusimanse, I would also be happy to see those.

I really like your Suggestions. I'd prefer one of the first two. Even saw the yellow Mongoose sharing a Enclosure with Meerkats

Didn't even know that Species yet. Would definitely be interesting and we definitely need more african Rainforest Animals. I'd love to get those in a DLC together with the Congo Peafowl and one or two african Monkeys
Edit: or one african Monkey and a Turaco if they would be possible due to mostly jumping from Branch to Branch🐦
