Another solution to ganker problem

That's why the majority of people play in Solo, because we aren't jerks. And Open remains less populated because of that.
It just baffles me that people wonder why Open isn't more populated, when the answer is easy.

I'm not sure that's actually the case though. I think there are just fewer people playing. It is true that Carriers & the Odd instancing split have affected the chances of random encounters though.

The number of posts complaining about the population in Open that pop up on a regular basis would seem to disagree with you. I really wouldn't know, I rarely play in Open, as there is zero benefit to doing so.
None of these posts came from the PvP community, as far as I'm aware.

This^^^, exactly.

Obviously player preference plays a large part in mode choice, sometimes I just don't want to interact.

But in general, if a player is in Open, more things can happen.

True.
For example sometimes I'm away from home on a crappy connection so I"m obviously not going to click Open only to lag and teleport around on other people's screen.
Also sometimes I'm on call at work, in which case I'm not going to participate in organic PvP because I don't want to appear a clogger.

I've been that T9 pilot in open looking for a challenge and can categorically state at trade CGs there is never a shortage of traders in open in my experience. If anything the most recent CGs have lacked opposition (.com notwithstanding!)

There's a false assumption that Open is dead and these threads are somehow an insidious and diabolical way to get new CMDR Roger Ramjet into Open to be cruelly killed.

Across the galaxy, it's unlikely you'll meet at anywhere but hotspots. But you will meet other CMDRS at hotspots.

As a trader, every death is on you in Open. Either "compromise your build" to be able to escape, don't compromise but get extremely good at reading the scanner, or choose another mode, or block.

It's really not that complicated!

Like revoked only because of the "or block" part. :)

For all those who love PvP and by extension ganking people who are unarmed because the game "allows you to do it as its not against the rules", if you so enjoy open so much sell it to everyone else who wants to play Elite like they used to and exclusively play in PG or solo. Go on sell it to us to make us want to come into open and play it exclusively ;)

When I was a kid I played the original Elite on the family BBC model B. I played it a hell of a lot, I got really immersed into the whole being a spaceship pilot finding my own path kind of thing. My avatar on this forum is the Acornsoft Badge I got for reaching Elite & sending off the postcard that came in the box, it was an achievement that I was proud of & I continued to play various versions of Elite, Elite+ & Oolite for the next 30-odd years until i got ED in 2015 & it exceeded my expectations as far as that general feeling of being a spaceship pilot finding my own path.

All those years playing Elite one thing I regularly wished I could do was to meet another player in the game, to see the different approaches they took & to join forces or find out how we stack up against each other competitively; to learn from them and let them see the things I could do.

In ED we have that choice now, we can finally do that if we want to.

I'm not picky. I simply wish to press one button and watch all my foes instantly perish in flames, and am subsequently promoted to galactic emperor and awarded a Death Star.

Is that so much to ask?

I think you're forgeting that this discussion is generally about why Open is dead. Open is dead because, in general, most people don't like jerks. Question is, are you one of the jerks here making excuses for being a jerk?
Open isn't dead. Just minutes ago I saw:
  • 9 players in Leesti
  • 7 players in Shinrarta Dezhra
  • 1 player in Deciat
  • 1 player in HIP 22460
Pretty normal outside peak hours. If open feels empty to you, it may be because you have too many players on your block list and the game keeps creating empty instances for you wherever you go.

I'll settle for trailing gunsights that actually work with dumbfires.

Not necessarily due to blocking. Empty instances can also happen if you are behind a CGNAT or use Dual Stack Lite or have improperly forwarded ports or lack of UPnP support (either unsupported or blocked by the router) and there is no rechable peer in an already existing instance.

FDev does not spawn TURN relays for random encounters.

Hmmm..

No. Computers cant see the difference between a gank and a friendly play..
Also.. Just stick to Solo/PG if you are doing a CG and are afraid of rebuys. Where is your sense of adventure?

See all the other topics on other suggestions. There have been many
Yes they can. “Report crimes” on or off.

I'm PORT_RESTRICTED with UPnP and port forwarding off. It doesn't seem to affect my chances to meet random people.

Proposal: If report crimes was on, the killer gets notoriety. Notoriety flags them as “most wanted” and makes them a mission target. Folks who accept the missions get beacons and tips to the killer’s location. The mission reward is large and paid from the offender’s own funds, with a sizeable portion going to the victims.

This is an opportunity to engage more players, while creating another form of legitimate pvp.

Need to balance to be sure that you can’t just kill your mates and cash in; just make the whole effort costly to the perpetrator.

Ineffective. The killer will just switch to solo or pg and simply wait out the notoriety decay.
