Anti-Aliasing does not function

No matter what I select I can't seem to get rid of the horrible aliasing in game. It is most prominent in the Stations when Docked. No matter what setting in Elite, or forced by the video card, it just looks terrible.

Any suggestions?

Have the Latest Nvidia drivers and a GTX670

You could try DSR, Nate. SMAA is working pretty well for my, but in stations there is still quite a bit of aliasing going on, agreed.

The difference is clearly visible:

Very bad antialiasing!

Greetings fellow spacefarers.

I am really enjoying Elite Dangerous, still learning the ropes.

But what's the deal with the antialiasing? I have a very powerful system but the AA is rubbish. Tried a number of settings, even tried using Nvidia Inspector to set the AA, still just as bad.

I've done a search on the forum, but not found anything recent of any help.

GTX770 4gb Duel BIOS.

Sorry chaps, but FXAA isn't working for me. I've tried other settings too.

Awful aliasing mostly on stations.

I'm afraid posting still screenshots says nothing. Aliasing is worse with movement.

Yeah, AA is pretty bad in this game, and anybody who says otherwise is just wrong.

Yes it works, in the sense that it gets better as you use higher settings and there is a clear difference between each, but even with FXAA it's just bad.

There shouldn't be so many jaggies.

Ya, there is a difference between having AA turned off and putting one of the options on but there is little to no difference between the different types of AA. I took some sample screenshots with FXAA, MLAAx4, and SMAA. There are so many jaggies. I am getting a solid 200fps, I want to turn the AA up by about 4x more but there is no option.

I put the screenshots in a album on Imgur https://imgur.com/a/ShiEn.

The difference at all these screenshots is clearly visible. FXAA blurs the image to make it smooth. MLAAx2/4 were the worst in terms of AA in ED but they still work. SMAA clearly shows the difference in comparison to MLAA. And as you did not upload the screenshots if AA OFF it is impossible to justify that AA does not work. If you have the same image with AA ON and OFF - there is an issue, if AA ON and AA OFF are different then AA is working.

Just a thought but ... anti-aliasing is dependant on resolution and sample size.
The higher the screen resolution the better it can blend in the jaggies. The more area around the line (sample) you take the more the blend will be smooth.
The original poster didn't tell us the Screen resolution he(?) was using.

The anti-aliasing is a function of the GPU not the program so in part you can't blame the developers of Elite for this issue. they simply enumerate and make available the options supported by your video card.

What might be the issue with Elite AA is the numerous straight lines in the game and the high contrast. It is far easier to hide a jaggy with AA on a multicoloured background than a black one or one which already has multiple special effects applied to it.

Thoughts from an unkempt mind.

I never said there was no difference with AA on or off. But maybe I posted in the wrong topic.

AA works for me, but the difference between the types of AA is very small.

I uploaded a new album highlighting the problem areas. http://imgur.com/a/IJp5M

SMAA is the best, but the jaggies are still EXTREAMLY noticeable...even more so when the game is in motion. Maybe I am getting old, but I remember the days when we could jack AA up to x16 to remove the jaggies.

I agree completely.
At any settings there are clear and unattractive jaggies/shimering on sharp lines.
It is most observable when approaching outposts.

Enabling SMAA or any other AA doesn't seem to have any noticeable effect for me. Jagged edges are very prominent in and around stations and also visible in the menu's when I move my head. I uploaded a little vid to demonstrate.

From the first day i started to play Elite i noticed this, Aliasing is too poor, jagged lines everywhere, any other modern game has more and good AA options. DSR just lowers too much the frame rate, at least you need twice the resolution for starting to see the same same effect as a good AA so it is useless for me, and i tell you this using a 780ti. Some Dev told that some render or lighting system they are using in the game doesn´t allow to improve AA.

Problably people who has playing many hours get used to it, but it´s interesting to see this threads from new commanders.

It seems to be a specific shader that causes aliasing especially in Station Interiors, makes a great looking game look very low resolution.

I'm playing at 2560x1440 with SMAA and it looks like 1280x720 inside stations, very offputting.

I've tried running at 4k and the shaders just look as bad.
