Anti-Botting Agreement

Hi there,

You can get your own Google spreadsheet at the following address:

How you choose you use your new spreadsheet is your business, and it is free of charge, so you should feel free to spread the word!

To be honest I don’t play the game to fill in spreadsheets and use a BOT that tells me what to do. I play it for the danger the challenge and fun, your spreadsheets and BGS BOT are effective but not very fun. Of course anyone can use a spreadsheet, but your tool is a programmed asset designed specifically to replace human work with automated instructions. Again why not share it and show us, it’s a simple solution. Let everyone use it and the odds will be equal.

Hi there,

In my previous message you will find a link through which you will be able to create your own spreadsheet, should you desire to do so.

Any use of the Google Sheets API that you may or may not take part in, is between you and Google.

I hope this helps!

So if there are no plans to develop it further you should have no issue with an agreement that draws the line beyond it's existing functionality but below what Mysteron describes, yes?

Personally I think what you describe is already so far beyond what the game itself provides that I see no functional difference between a player group using what either of you describe. As a thought experiment it's a technically interesting challenge to bring it all together, as a tool for tactical BGS manipulation it's a slippery slope.

The point of this, as I'm sure you already understand, is that this AB-A is a toothless gesture of goodwill if all it does is ask people to agree to FDev's existing ToS when actual 'confirmed' botting is vanishingly rare but the paranoia (over botting) resulting from this exercise is rather more widespread yet tools like what you & Mysteron describe are capable of being used to similar effect as far as the game is concerned.

ETA for clarity: I am not concerned in the least about botting affecting my game, I am concerned about the effect paranoia over botting has, and opposing the effects of large scale automation of BGS manipulation with actions performed by humans instead of bots is rather closer to an actual issue in the long term than just paranoia that any opposition might be bots.
It serves to do the opposite. Ive been involved in games in the past, where paranoia about hacks & botting spread by whispers led to a general self-defeating attitude where the first response to being comprehensively outclassed was to cry 'hacks'. It was at a level where competitive players couldnt even hang out on most public servers without getting banned (from that server) amid a tirade of abuse.

It was a shame, and made many players forever-noobs because they never tried to learn from what happened but immediately dismissed it. It made them feel better in the moment, but stopped them actually learning to play better which was tbf the focus for them generally.

What the 'community' in that game didnt have was a place to discuss the reasons they felt cheated, and see if others more experienced felt the same way about their circumstances, or if more info was needed, how to get it, etc. If they had that, it would have stopped a lot of the paranoia, not heightened it. & a dose of reality goes a long way in itself.

Yes I mostly agree with you. There is already an anti-botting response and it´s called Frontier Developments. You may think that they are not doing enough or may never do enough but they are the only ones who can and you can at least be sure they know what´s going on and will take some steps at some point. The best policy is to monitor and report to the people who can actually do something. Attempting to gather some kind of grand army of factions and create a botting inquisition is a dark path to go down. As I have mentioned before, the entire endgame of this thread is to create this response task force to ´deal´ with systems or factions that have been accused of botting. I can guarantee you that if such a force is created it will be used and abused by those who cry wolf too many times. I have encountered factions who believe the are so effective that only bots can beat them and simply can not stomach a bit of honest opposition. We take our hits with a little grace and humour and work hard to fight back, we never give up and persistence pays off in the long game. I wish we could put to rest all this bitterness...

Thanks for the link but we don´t need a spreadsheet. However it would be nice to see how your discord BGS BOT works. Surely you can admit that this is an actual programmed BGS BOT that exists, the spreadsheet merely feeds it data. I have used this BOT many times it works very well and negates the need for me to do any actual BGS work myself. I´m not saying its against the rules or anything but surely you can at least confirm that this an actual programmed BGS BOT.

Hi there,

As iterated before, Enosis is a computer program that connects to the Google servers through the Google Sheets API. You can get libraries for this in several languages, I personally prefer JavaScript. But PHP works too.

It can not negate the requirement of you doing BGS work, because it can not play the game for you. It simply does not work that way.

It can only provide you information on what you should do in a system to achieve the target influence for a given faction. This is similar to opening the spreadsheet on your browser and reading what needs to be done(the equations exist on the spreadsheet in question).

However, it is up to you to log onto the game and actually execute the task that is required.

Given that you have professed knowledge of the program and the user experience, it seems unnecessary for me to go to any length of detail in explaining how exactly it works.

I hope this answers all of your questions.

Finally thank you for an honest answer, that´s all I wanted. This is a programmed BGS BOT that is fed data from a spreadsheet and gives you precise details on what BGS actions to carry out, that is exactly how I have been describing it. We hope you will pledge to either cease use of this BGS BOT or perhaps better still share it with the community. We all can agree that we want an end to automation.

Hi there,

The degree of "automation" provided by Enosis is only that you don't have to open your web browser to view the results. This is intended to make it easier for console players.

Before there was Enosis, people were told to look at the spreadsheet. But that doesn't work on mobile phones. So Enosis was born.

Your request of "cease the use of this BGS BOT" has therefore been denied for the following reasons:

1. There is no functional difference between using Enosis and using Google Chrome, or say. Firefox
2. It is already shared with the community. However, due to server capacity limitations, it is only shared with groups that have signed up to our Partner Scheme.

In the beginning, there was the sheet. And the players would ask the curator of the sheet what should they do, and the curator the sheet would say, look at the sheet for it contains all ths information you need to define your own priorities. For the sheet is the word. It both defines targets and measures progress towards them. But the console players did not like this answer for they found to 5000 cells of the sheet bothersome to read and write with a controller in one hand and a phone in the other, so a wise and resourceful person created a programme which did both the reading and writing of the sheet through an interface they called discord. And so the console player were happy.

The curator of the sheet was also joyous because no longer did the sheet have to be designed so the players could understand its ways or read its contents when flying. The sheet evolved as the 7 disciples of the sheet added new and wondrous things to it. So Endeth the 1st lesson

And so began the steady decline into grindy automation until the first person took it too far, then others followed so they could feel competitive and steadily the smaller groups were edged out.

Then everyone agreed automation wasn't healthy for the game & agreed to stop treating it like a job & just get on with being a spaceship pilot & having fun ;)

And everyone lived happily ever after :)

Finally we are getting to the truth, again my thanks for your honesty. All this boils down to one simple fact, the BGS BOT outputs detailed instructions to anyone who uses it and all you need do is follow the instructions, the spreadsheet that feeds the BOT is in turn fed by only a tiny group of people. The vast majority of users need do nothing except digest the BGS BOT's instructions and execute them. We hope you will reconsider your use of this BOT or consider sharing it.

And now to the crux of the argument. This entire campaign is built upon the venomous foundations of a vendetta driven crusade by one faction against another faction. This quest has achieved just one thing, to vaguely heighten frontier's awareness of the use of automation, and that unfortunately is all it will ever achieve. It has no power and no future. Furthermore it has done more damage than good by fear mongering and artificially exaggerating the perceived use of automation in game. How many players have been put off by all this negative publicity, how many players have given up their BGS gameplay thinking that all their work is fruitless. End this now, and don't poison the image of a game we all love so dearly...

Myself and my faction hereby withdraw from this agreement and we urge all members to disavow this ill conceived campaign, end this now, and let Frontier deal with this in whatever flawed way they can. When the first accusation comes, the first faction censured, the first freedom denied, this will chain us all irrevocably. There can be no justice as long as laws are absolute. Botting is a shameful act but not as shameful as false accusations of botting.

A wise man once said 'The road from legitimate suspicion to rampant paranoia is much shorter than we think.'

Let us all ponder this as we all blaze our own trail out there in the deep dark void...

Anyone can feed the sheet and they do. There are at least 5 small groups I know of who are entirely autonomous. I liked you so much more when you were threatening your neighbours with destruction than when you play the victim card. Excising you from the A-B A i forthwith.

EDIIT For the avoidance of doubt, this absolutely does not refer to Riverside.
