I think the ED community has quite a long history of sniffing their own farts, for sure, but I strongly disagree that expecting a modicum of professionalism from a company that you are a customer of is "taking things for granted". The state of Odyssey's release is wholly unacceptable, and everyone should be kicking the out of FDev for another in a long history of mediocre product deliveries. I wish my customers had the same patience and fanaticism as FDev panderers.
It's a wonderful game despite the efforts of FDev over the past four years, largely because the core flight system and Stellar Forge are so good. I don't mind if they ultimately decide to take the game in a direction that doesn't meet my needs - i.e. with the new planet tech - but to say that people are taking FDev for granted when they expect them to actually functionally support their MMO is utterly obsequious.
People take things for granted when they moan for years about almost everything in ED, even though as you can see there is absolutely no other game in a pair of decades that has even attempted what FD has done (unless we consider SC a game). That's the reason why even the it's most adamant haters never leave (except Bazmeson). People usually whine and moan about things in ED that no other game has ever even done, it's ridiculous.
Ultimately, if ED didn't exist, the second best in line would be Evochron Legacy. If that's not reason to cut FD a bit of slack and give them the benefit of the doubt, then I don't know what is. In fact, I suspect that nobody who will disagree with me on this matter will actually go ahead and ditch ED for Evochron.
People may look at ED and FDEV as some kind of evil people out to steal their cash while delivering the "wust game evah" or "worst planetary tech evah", evil capitalists and similar loads of bovine excrement, or they can look at FD as the people who cared to deliver what is today, by many orders of magnitude, the best game in the genre (even with it's
many warts), which has been continually improved, while pretty much every other game studio didn't give 2 farts about proper space sims.
While FD has undoubtly botched the release, the amount of vitriol aimed at the devs on a daily basis is absolutely disgusting and it says a lot more about the ones hurling the insults and about the devs, and while some of the criticism is fair and true, much of it is disingenious to say the least.
I've run through the tutorial of Evochron. It's a meaty to be sure; leans much more heavily into the sim than the action-adventure of Elite. I'm having about the same time as I had with Elite when I tried to figure out what all the buttons did, haha! The flight engine is great, but I haven't been able to explore a huge amount of planets to find what I need. I think it may be a little too simmy for my hooning needs, but also I might just be an awful pilot. It took me dozens of hours to become semi-competent in FA Off in Elite xD
The good news is I have Fly Dangerous for my wozzing about now!
Evochron is still a decent game, made by a brilliant but single dev, who single handedly kept this genre alive for over a decade. Still, as you can see for yourself, it's lightyears behind ED in pretty much everything except the flight model which is also good. You won't be having much hooning, or canyon racing, or wonderful planets, or even much of anything in Evochron, compared to ED.
