General / Off-Topic Anybody else sticking with Windows 7?

Because I am. The fact that I heard the gadgets and aero glass theme was discontinued is a real disappointment...and the icons look too flat and simple, and their shininess was removed. To be honest, I feel that If I switch to Windows 10, it's going to be like I'm running a touchscreen tablet on a keyboard-mouse desktop with the metro/tiles theme that is also included in the start menu. Even with that theme disabled and set back to classic mode with icons set to small, the buttons are still pretty big.

What do you guys think?

The next Windows 11 will be forced surveillance (worse than Windows 10's surveillance) and advertisements you'll be required to click to pass certain functions. And after that? The typical every-day police officer that pulls you over for speeding will be wearing their big exoskeleton suits and will be authorized to point a railgun directly at your head thinking you're going to pull a weapon when they ask you to take out license and registration from the wallet in your pocket. The future is indeed scary and true, my friends. And we've already passed the beginning of all this.

For the PC that runs ED I'm sticking to the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" mantra. Will probably upgrade from 7 to 10 on the last day of July (or whenever it is) just to take advantage of the free upgrade. I will use the other family PCs as guinea pigs, as the users needs are less important i.e. homework ;), Facebook etc.

My understanding is that MS have said there won't be a Windows 11, just incremental updates to 10. Perhaps in a couple of years MS will just rename it to "Windows" and then we'll get Android-like patch names like Kitty Kat, Gobstopper, Dogbreath, Oddsocks etc.

Frankly, the internet privacy ship sailed years ago.

Those of us who surfed in the 90s will remember the wild west atmosphere and how it very suddenly ended in 2002 after the 9/11 thingie.

To be honest, some of the stuff that I used to stumble across back then leaves me with little regrets for the old days. Click on a perfectly innocent link, eventually up popped a photo and it's Gary Glitter all over again.

Here in the UK, it's been effectively illegal to send encrypted information for a number of years.

Even the local garbage collection company has a right to access anyone's surfing history.

That this history even exists demonstrates how utterly pathetic demands for privacy are.

Grow up people.

No-one cares.

If anyone snoops on my computer they will need to be pretty board. As for my bank account, I'll save anyone the bother. The balance is zero, like most people's.

I wish I'd stuck with Win8, now with 10 my Rift can only use the refresh rate of my main screen which is a 1080p60 TV, for decent Rift experience you need at least 75 Hz but with the new SDK on Win10 you can't control those separately anymore...

I liked Win XP for many years. Even if I had Win 7 on another hard disk, I used Win XP many more years. For several years now, I like Win 7. It is fast and I use the Windows Classic theme
I do not like aero and all the superficial stuff.

I moved to WinXp from Win98 and from that moment I've used XP. Aive tried other versions, but didn't see reasons to move to them. This is my own preferences.

No problem whatsoever with Win 10. 64bit smoothness and no (knock on polymer) hickups. Just follow the old rule; every odd OS: Win XP, Win 7, Win 10.

To add a small amount of balance here, I've switched to Windows 10 and it's fine. For background - I'm notorious for not upgrading at work. My main desktop PC is Windows XP and my reaction to the news that Microsoft had dropped support for it was "thank god, no more updates". On my laptop I've got Windows 7 and really like it. So, when I came to buy myself a brand new gaming PC recently (mostly for Elite) I was faced with this question - Windows 10 or Windows 7. I did a fair amount of research and came to the conclusion that Windows 10 was a lot better than Windows 8 (which I hate) and frankly I should just bite the bullet. I want my PC to last a fair while (and ultimately to support the latest VR developments) and I figured that, over the next few years, there's gonna be more and more support for Windows 10 and less and less for Windows 7 so I might as well get used to it now rather than have to change the OS on my machine further down the line. While I agree that the look of Windows 10 is pretty uninspiring I've had no real issues with it plus I get the sense that it's generally a more efficient operating system than 7 or 8.

Oh, and I don't really give two hoots about all the Windows 10 big brother spy paranoia plus it's very easy to turn off those data sharing features (which I did for performance reasons - I don't want my PC wasting any valuable bandwidth).

So, a thumbs up for Windows 10 here.

I used XP on my old PC right up until it died. As you said, no updates, and that was great. I found it completely stable not to mention that after all those years, I knew it inside out.
