Anyone else got this problem with Engineers?

Not entirely true - if you have G5 upgrade, the experimental can only be changed/added at a G5 engineer for that upgrade. The engineer you visit to change an experimental must be capable of creating the level of engineering you have.
.
Uh. Interesting. I had no idea that Farseer can actually do G5 Dirty Drives. If she can, you might be right. If she can not, then your statement clearly is false, for i recently again did my dirty drives G5 by remote engineering, then went to Farseer to have the drag drives effect added. (Just like i remote engineered my power plant to G5 armored, then had Farseer add the monstered special effect. So i guess Farseer can also do G5 armored power plants? )
.

The engineers suck, they suck abysmally and are the one single reason i dont own every paint job in the frontierstore and jurassic world evolution.

Worst example of gameplay i think i have seen and if elite werent such a great game otherwise i would have quit playing it solely because of the engineers.

Totally agree OP, the engineers absolutely suck (for the reasons you outlined and others) and reflect a serious lack of creativity in game design imo.

Yeah I feel you with SJ. What I do is pin lightweight armor from her then load up my anaconda with nothing but hull reinforcements and engineer them all in bulk.
yeah. its a pitty that we don't have a second engineer for grade 5 HRPs.
we can get the secondaries from Liz, but for the actual blueprints both Bulkheads and HRPs need to be done by SJ

Do you do a lot of pvp?

For example: Unlocked one engineer to 5 but have an upgrade at L1 of an unlocked 5, providing the engineer can create at least L1 of that mod type then they can apply/change the experimental.

No, that's not true anymore. They changed that in the 3.0 update.

I literally just put thermal spread on my a G5 engineered armored power plant at Felicity Farseer.

That is not what I was saying.

IME the experimental upgrades can only be done on upgraded parts that they can produce - i.e. G1-G2 drives can have their experimental changed at Elvira, but not G3-G5 drives. At Farseer G1-G3 drives should have their experimental changeable but if you have G4-G5 drives then you are out of luck. At least unless it has changed since I last did a round of engineering.

Errmm... I am talking in at least 3.0 and 3.1, maybe 3.2 or 3.3 changed/changes this but it definitely was not the case during my last round of updates.

3.0 changed the mechanics entirely, but in all cases post 3.0 where I have tried to apply an experimental upgrade at an engineer with a lower skill then I have been unable to do so.

I literally just engineered an entire set of core internals for the Krait phantom and mamba.
I G5ed everything from pins at my home station then went to Felicity Farseer and The Dweller to put all the experimentals on.

Also, I haven't been to Marco Qwent or Hera Tani since 3.0. I just G5 my powerplant from pins then put my experimentals on at Farseer.

Then you are not in the Live system, you are in the 3.3 Beta.

I can say for certain that post-3.0, I have been unable to add/alter experimentals at places with an engineer with lesser capability than the upgrade I had fitted. My personal way round that issue which definitely applied at 3.0 and possibly 3.1 was to only apply the minimum (or near minimum) engineering, then the experimental (at a suitable engineer), then continue upgrading it afterwards.

If this issue was fixed at some point it was never announced in the release notes (not even for the Beta).

you can go with a grad5 engineered module to a grad3 engineer, click on the grade1 blueprint and apply the experimental effect.
thats doable for quite some time now.

I'm on Xbox. No possible way to play the beta.

I bought all the core internals and put them on my conda so that when the ships release i will have every component ready to go.

Sorry, I should've been more clear about that.

The Phantom and Mamba are not in the mainstream release yet - not sure exactly how, but you must be playing the Beta if you have access to the Phantom and the Mamba. They are not available in the live release on the PC.

I don't have access to the ships yet because I'm not playing the beta.

I just used the Coriolis beta to see what the core internal sizes are then bought them for my anaconda and engineered them. The components are currently sitting in storage waiting for the ships to be released on xbox

That's right. With Dirty Drive recipe pinned I no longer need to visit Palin because Farseer can apply special effects to it.

To unlock them you have to do some super out of the way stuff that in some cases just go against how you play the game (One wants me to reach a certain level with the federation yet I raid their ships often so will just never be able to unlock that engineer I guess) and that you have to spend a full day flying out to wherever they are, running around the galaxy tracking down each one.

The worst bit about it is how much of it makes no sense.

Grind is one thing if it can be justified, even if it's dull. But under a system where the rationale behind that grind falls flat on it's face then the system just fails on all fronts.

Much of it is just so unimaginative, from a player's point of view non-sensical and in some instances even pointless. No-one wants grind for the sake of grind.

Material traders are your friend, thankfully these take the edge off the worst of it.

Well all I can say is that was not true for PC users like myself - whether that is a platform specific issue or some other concern is unknown.

All I can say is that with 100% certainty that the situation I have described is in accordance with my experience on the PC.

I think you should give it another try and report back with screenshots or something.

Why? to satisfy doubting Thomas/Theresa types? No thanks, got better things to do with my time than spending unnecessary time and materials on such endeavours.

What's with the hostility?

I just hate to hear that something that's been so helpful for me and many others isn't working properly for you.

Sorry if I came across as offensive. That wasn't my intent.
