Anyone Using Track IR?

TrackIR was more than I was prepared to pay, but EDTracker (http://edtracker.org.uk/) is a great investment for just £40.

It works perfectly, and has improved the ED experience enormously.

What's the software that comes with EDTracker like? I must say the TrackIR stuff is very slick, lots of really nice calibration stuff, power curves, tweaks for ambient light levels, etc. Note: I'm not at all trying to diss EDTracker, just curious.

I've been using Head Track No IR, which uses the same protocols, but with webcam tracking. It works pretty well, so long as lighting is good, and great value for free.

Brumster demonstrates it nicely here:

I haven't messed around with the config TBH - I look up, I look down, left and right....set my dead spot limits when centered....it does exactly what I want it to. It very rarely loses its centre, but there a small button on the unit that re-centers your view....just look forward and click. I don't think light levels come in to play....there is no camera involved.

The EDTracker does come up with initial set up software, but once its callibrated the system recognises is as a joystick for all intents and purposes, you can then either configure ED to use the joystick which works great, but if you want more control like using curves and mapping lateral movement to your rotation, you can use the free opentrack software to take the joystick motion, add the advanced controls and output TrackIR protocol so all games think that its TrackIR. :)

I've built my trackir clone from scratch for less than $20 including a webcam and some lego pieces. The webcam was the most expensive part at $10, took it apart and removed the IR filter then put a tiny square of floppy disk media on the lens. I've soldered a cable right into the headset's DAC to power the LED's so there are no extra cables or batteries needed. Using Lego peices, it's practically indestructible too. http://i.imgur.com/jBaHLpK.jpg

Rep for creative use of lego.

I tend to use meccano for such things, but the lego is more colourful. Nice.

I was also hesitating because of the price initially but it gave about 50% to my game experience with Elite. I would never regret that purchase...

Using the TrackIR 5 w/ the Proclip for about a year now. So incredibly happy that I finally pulled the trigger and got it when I did. It adds an incredible layer of immersion and situational awareness to Elite and other games.

For me trackir is a must in Elite (as well as in any other flight sim game) - it makes immersion much better, and also navigation around your in cockpit ui panels much easier.

I started with an Edtracker but was disappointed to learn it couldn't follow my tilting head movement, just pitch and yaw (I think in fact it can if you use opentrack, but don't quote me on that) Anyway since then, I too went for a Delanclip with a 2nd hand ps3 camera (all in about £25) which I popped open and dug out the ir filter - now my headtracking works flawlessly day or night and I can tilt my head to my hearts content..

edit - just noticed OP is weeks old.. as you were.

I have an additional question on it; getting ready to decide if I want to get a TrackIR or not. Is it worthwhile even on a small screen? I play with a 17" monitor, seems like this would be more useful on a large screen or multiple screen setup.

Any thoughts?

I'm using mine on a 1024x768 15" screen (yeahyeah, I know already ) and it's absolutely frickin amazing (plus my experience can only get better in the future).

Love TrackIR. On the occasions when I play on the laptop or TV and don't have access to the TrackIR device I feel genuinely constrained. Some sort of headtracking device is thoroughly recommended for any flight sim.

Curtains? :)

Not enough for me - unless they're black-out curtains/blinds. I always use it with the curtains closed and as soon as the sun comes out the TrackIR still goes crazy.

I've bought Track IR, just for ED and wouldn't play without it now. Worth mentioning that I disable it (F9) when navigating station menus, as they can be a bit fiddly when TrackIR is in use.

There's an option somewhere called "hardware cursor" or something like that, with that toggled, moving the mouse causes the cursor to move up/down/left/right in the plane of the station screen, rather than relative to your head. The latter approach really doesn't work if you tilt your head so you're not looking perpendicularly at the station screen; as you've noticed! ;)

Ed tracker with open track does capture tilt as well
Works great! Much better than the webcam solution.
Had to tweak the curves a bit but much better now :)

Got my Track IR 4 today. It was only $99.00 with the hat included, which is about 1/3 cheaper than a TrackIR5 similarly kitted.

I've heard that there isn't a HUGE difference between the 4 and 5. At least not enough for owners of the 4 to upgrade. Which tells me the 4 is good enough at 2/3 the price.

I was interested in others but I have Flight Simulator X as well, and that was one of the major reasons for jumping in. The 2D panels in FSX are difficult to see out of and the 3D panels require constant moving of the joystick hat to view. So I got the Track IR mostly for FSX, Using in Elite Dangerous will just be a value add.

I've been using TIR for about three months and can concur with the users on her. It's excellent. I use the Pro clip and have mapped centre and off to my x52 pro. Turning it off while docked makes it easier I find.
