April Alpha

Somehow, there are people that think Frontier Developments are incredibly stupid and believed that they could go from Alpha to release in 4 months ... this from a game company that has been around since 1994, making games for every platform available ... Really? .. they must have known!

I just felt that the estimated dates on the kickstarter were ambitious. Personal opinion.

I just felt that the estimated dates on the kickstarter were ambitious. Personal opinion.

I also felt this and commented on it way way back. There were people on this forum adamant that they were going 2 weeks alpha, 2 weeks premium beta, and 2 week standard beta. I laughed heartily.

The kickstarter page was rushed, or phoned in even! Pretty much anyone could see that at the time.

Those estimates were a bodge job definitely. But am I correct in saying that pledge level info is fixed once kickstarter is started?

I'm sure FD knew at the time, just couldn't wind back the clock to before the rush job.

Let's forgive them for that mistake in the excitement of launching a kickstarter to finally build the game of your dreams shall we?

Wasn't the original KS dates based on a different version of the game though? I thought after achieving such a high level of support they changed their plans to something far more ambitious, hence a substantial difference in development time.

Not really, Only change I'm aware of is the Frame shift drive that came about due to DDF interaction and the Mac stretch goal. What we're getting is what they laid out during the kickstarter.

The real reason, you'd hope as a possible alternative is not too savoury, while filling out the Kickstarter form someone asked "How long will each phase last" and someone else said "I dunno, a Month?".

I didn't look through all 60 of the updates on kickstarters so can't say if they said anything there but in the main description the only changes to the plans were the two stretch-goals. First, at £1.4 million a OS X version that will be released approximately 3 months after the PC version. Second, at £1.5 million, 10 extra flyable ships. No mention of needing more time...

Now, that said. In the risks and challenges section (which all pledgers should have read but I will assume only a minority did) they did say "If necessary then we will delay the release beyond March 2014, but I do not believe we will need to do so" so, yea...

I'm probably confusing it with something else, but I thought the level and depth of the multiplayer portion of the game changed during the kickstarter campaign. Maybe that was Star Citizen instead.

A delay is no biggie considering the complexity of it all.
It would have been nice in March but I'm not going to throw my toys out if its late.

That's pretty much my reaction too. As others have said the wait for a new Elite game has been so long that a few extra months isn't really that bad.

I think most would also agree that waiting a little longer and getting a more complete/less buggy game is far less frustrating than getting a game that was rushed and becomes unplayable with bugs.

Hope I dont start something

As a previous beta backer who has been glued to every pixel and word dripped out of the project I can understand there frustration. I did relent and purchase the alpha partly the above frustration, where I do feel it can seem as though frontier are deliberatley wringing it out to make you stump up the considerable extra. Anyway having got the alpha my views have changed ,every little bit of it so well crafted that you want them to do it right. Just a thought though if frontier were to release say 1 scenario from alpha 1 one of the ones at the end to beta waiters it may go along way to relieving their frustrations. I know they made no such promises but as a gesture of good will and restore the good will of the fans.

Sure they could do this, but then they would either release a very old build, or have to devote resources from building the game and bug fixing the current version. Don't get me wrong, I think it'd be a nice idea too, but it would be a waste of their resources which would be better spent making the real game.
