Are FDev still optimizing Odyssey? Or is this it?

If my memory serves me... (but I may be in error) the last couple of EDO pre-launch trailers were 'in-game footage' rather than in engine.
Screenies were produced using the now removed 'Ultra for capture' setting, which I do recall making great scenery, at a cost to FPS, of course.
Your memory serves you well... It did said that, and to add more to it, the game itself in first Alpha stage did truly showed as in trailer... Even on my gtx 1070 i was able to experience it, albeit on a 20fps show, but it was there.... Downgrade happened update after update, which was dissapointing, even if my potato would never had the resources needed to load that.

i absolutely remember those adds... they were dodgy Bullshot adds and i had no respect for those when they made them...... however the bit of the post i quoted is the important part for me.... now most companies who still insist on this (and i still dont like this) put not in game footage on them.

Even FD did this when they launched their outrageously fake elite launch promo video ...... and yet despite it saying not ingame footage a lot still complained - and it generated meme videos of "elite trailer vs elite gameplay"
At the time i am fairly confident (but dont have a link i am afraid so discount if you want) that FD said from then on that their trailers would actually use genuine in engine unmodified video........... and AFAIK they have generally done just that. It is why i believed their launch EDO trailer.... and tbh it is still possible it WAS genuine

(but maybe running on SLI 3090s or summat)

i would be interested to know actually.
If you're talking about the launch trailer, you'll notice that there is a huge gap in quality between an action gameplay sceneries and a chill gameplay sceneries. You'll also notice that there are some features that were not at launch (like the atmosphere tint) or that there were already some weird bugs we still have, like the center plan being less detailled than the fore, back and sides plans.
So yeah, it's definitively in-game footage but from an alpha build (since there was no official beta phase) and not from the launch build. And i admit that they haven't overboosted the graphics parameters (since it seem very similare to UltraForCapture during open-alpha) unlike in previous trailer. But you'll also notice a difference in the pace of NPC movement between "chill" sceneries and "action" sceneries. In chill sceneries, movements seem to be in slow-motion, which makes me think there is a "bullet time" rate capture that is accelerated in "real time" rate video. Not really a thick argument, i agree, but still thicker than just being confident ;)

You right. Even the Ultra+ is now the shadow of what it was when it replaced the UltraForCapture (especially during the approaching phase) 😩

Thats my thought. I think Ralph has told use before but I've forgotton.

I mean, my 2017 system (GTX 1080 with i7700) does 60fps on ground at 1080p (tad slower in combat zones), mostly on ultra.

What's in this tater tot of a system?

Well, there's your issue right there.

Ground sites have a lot of AI. AI uses CPU, not GPU. It's your CPU that's grinding to a halt when you enter settlements.
Nah.
He plays on a GT 1030 which doesn't even meet the minimum requirement of the game. Not even close. I guess that's going to be the biggest problem.

Suffice as to say Odyssey reeks of bad, bad code and after 18 months of totally inept patching they gave up!

All we have now is twitch drops and people chasing lights across the sky box in their tin foil hats.

No new ships for over 4 years and a narrative that just drones on with zero new content.

God knows i have my issues with the direction of Elite, and i do have concerns about this narrative content........ but only in so far as it is a 1 shot and done kind of thing....... once it is done it is done and if you miss it, it has gone, rather than content which goes into the game and can be done either today or in 12 months time.

HOWEVER................. it is narrative content, and i think it is something the game is in need of, so i dont think it is fair to discount it.. Also i quite like the skins they are giving out.

The CPU is a bit slow for EDO settlements and CZs, but it's no where near as much of a problem as a GT 1030.

Most economical change to that system would be to drop in a second-hand mainstream GPU.

Keep that negative re-inforcement coming! I love the negative validation!
at some point games move on........ it really wont cost the earth to imporve your gpu with a 2nd hand one that will have a radical improvement.

(your cpu will take another upgrade imo). for example.... i bought a gtx 980 to replace my 560ti in my pinball table......... it was 2nd hand and cost me £100...... in gtx980 terms it was a monster as well, with a good factory over clock on it.

obviously whether £100 is a lot or not is subjective........... but if you want to play newish games you are going to need a better gpu than the one you have (truth be told i cant imagine horizons was an amazing experience on your gpu either was it?)

but just to give you a very rough idea here is a head to head of your gpu with a gtx 980 which i think would be a good fit for the rest of your system (bear in mind a 980 is still 8 years old now so its not going to be cutting edge, but it will likely be a point at which it is not worth going past due to the rest of your system

actually a v v quick google you can get a 980ti for £120 on ebay right now from a seller with decent feedback

am sure you can do better as well if you look harder. ebay would not normally be my go to for 2nd hand gear, i prefer avforums classifieds or overclockers uk members market - the latter is not easy to access however and needs you to be a contributing member of their forums for some time so i would go avforums iiwy

edit 2.... i just checked avforums classifieds, it sold a few days back but a high end gtx 970 which would also be a big step up on your gpu sold for £70 delivered.

All uk based but am sure where ever you live there will be a local equivalent

Ah yes the old rabbit hole screw it get the chip, motherboard, GPU, power, fans, and case then play all the games you want. Sorry cannot help you with the funding maybe start a fund raising page and get creative.

Excellent! Now, front me the money for a new PC for just one game. :)
Well, you could buy a ship in Star Citizen for the cost of a decent gaming rig... 🤪

My last before this one was bought over six months. Piece. By. Piece. One month the CPU. One month the GPU. Next the Power Supply. Next the Case. Next the cooling system... so we've all been there. During that time I had to make do with an integrated intel graphics card and turning all the setting down to low just to keep playing. Not once did I blame the game. Just dealt with it. Guess we're from different generations.
