Are fleet carriers disappearing from deep space?

Shortly after I got my fleet carrier this summer, I took it out into a sector of unexplored space that I had discovered some time ago on PS4, a place I wanted to make my "home away from home". It's not that far away, under 10KLY from Sol, so while my little sector remained undiscovered, there were multiple carriers within a few hundred LY from mine. The nebula in my quadrant also had a good concentration of fleet carriers.

That was months ago, and I just returned to my little plot of stars today. I had left my carrier out here and returned to the Bubble the old-fashioned way some time ago (returning to my carrier the same way). As is my habit when exploring, I checked the galaxy map to see what other carriers are around, and much to my surprise, deep space seems much more "empty" than it was last time I checked. There are no other carriers anywhere near mine, and even the nebula have only just one or two carriers, rather than the dozen I was seeing early on. Of course this makes me wonder how many explorers grew bored with their carriers or tired of refueling them, and thus decommissioned them. Fuel is not a problem for me because I rarely move my carrier. It's more of a mobile station these days, and I'm happy with where I parked it. I also leave it out here even when I am working in the Bubble, which probably is the exception, so maybe all the carriers I originally encountered in this deep space region have returned to the Bubble for CGs.

I'm not complaining, mind you. I actually prefer deep space feeling more "isolated". I'm just curious. In fact, it makes my carrier feel a bit more novel, since it's now the only one in quite a large radius, and anyone stumbling across it will be quite lucky. I'm just kinda curious as to where all the other carriers went to.

That's a superb plot setup though: What happened to all the carriers? I hope we will find a new type of USSs, containing derelict and salvagable carriers. Maybe that's what the extended downtime is for on Thursday?

:D S

most are outside the mining hotspots... yesterday i looked at one painite hotspot, and they're nothing but carriers and some in the bubble are already been returned to the factory.

Seems fairly evenly spread out in Deep Space, although only a miniscule amount of Carriers appear to be employed in Exploration role and at a distance to known tourist routes or hotspots.
Alot less than I expected. And if anything, the bubble and the Colonia Highway is quite crowded.

Last time I checked, when I counted either the carriers which were farther than 1000 ly from Sol and Colonia, or the ones which had UC installed, both counts came up as roughly 10% of carriers. So exploring with a carrier is a fairly niche usage.

To OP, it's probably just the area of space you chose. Looking at the timelapse video (on EDAstro) and just carriers in general, there doesn't appear to be any significant decline. But then, who knows how many fleet carriers are there in total?
Actually, @Arthur Tolmie , it would be quite fun if you guys posted that number somewhere ;)

Mine has done about 40kly since I purchased it, just approaching the bubble now after a trip west of the bubble for the HIP project.

Does the in-game galaxy map actually show fleet carriers at long range? I thought it was like the mats trader map, and you had to be relatively close in order for it to show up onthe map.

Several hundred light years I believe, but there are websites that track carrier locations, Inara has many thousands listed.

Yes, but the OP is reporting using the in-game tools. If the in-game tools don't show carriers if you are further than 500 LY from them, then that would explain why all the neighbouring carriers he could see while parked at his carrier have "disappeared". In which case, they haven't disappeared, it's just the OP can't see them anymore at that distance.

The OP could test the hypothesis, by asking someone else to see if they can find his own carrier out there using the in-game tools.

It appears so that they show at long range. (this is with the carriers filter applied)
