Are you ok hon?

There is a Steven King book / movie where this author gets abducted by a cray cray fan who then forces him to write stories. Redcourt <> King? My guess is as good as yours.

It certainly is a reference to "Misery", yes.
And, my word, is it a blunt and uninspiring one.
Thx to OP for reminding me to stay away from GN, and a repeated plea to FD: Hire writers, please.

They don't even need writers, just observers who report the events which happen in game. Trawl Inara for good log books or pictures, jump into PP discords and ask for an update. Follow the expansions of Player factions.

Live the game like some players do and then report it.

Simples.

I actually don't recall any player submitted news, so it must've been as memorable as the Galnet fluff we get now.

There was some big noise about it on the forums, as people felt that those 'favoured by FD' had a higher chance of having their stuff published. Especially when it was from a 'different perspective' it would be problematic as it would appear FD was picking sides in player-organized disputes.

I used to collect and colate GalNet stories.
Line them all up after the weeks they ran.

I used to follow GalNet looking for clues and hints.

Not any more.

Le Radeau du Galnet

On one hand, I'm very pleased with some of the stuff which is happening in Elite Dangerous Q4 release. On the other hand, though, I do sometimes wonder what the 100+ people who supposedly dedicated to Elite Dangerous are doing with their time.

Meanwhile, other companies like Hello Games and Egosoft are really kicking their space games into high gear with a small fraction of that personnel!

Frontier take note!

Arguably, many of them weren't Galnet but Local (Station) News, so you got a valid point there.
Plus, a huge amount never got published, one had to turn to the Forum or Discord Channels to witness them in all their glory.

All combined, Galnet would by now be a history book of the entire bubble since years with local Articles giving detailed records of the dynamic past that many Systems/Areas of space hold (i.e. with links to related local Stories right in Galnet, "Would you like to know... more?" ;) ).
Unfortunately, almost none of those rich Player-driven events and campaigns made it there.

I got a far better indicator of how seriously FD takes that particular site. From that link in the OP, hit News...

...You're welcome for the laugh on a monday afternoon.

Yep, great huh? It's just yet another thing that's been abandoned. Right there with the iOS app from launch, Mac support, 32-bit, and oh, PP, SLF, SAR, MC, CQC/Arena, etc., etc. ...

OP: Galnet has always been like this as in disconnected and with characters you cannot interact with. There's ZERO characters in this game, none. Galnet just scabs on as a story layer but there's nothing in the game outside of names of stations or locations that connects to what is being shown in the (Galnet) text. This latest one simply exposes this fact with greater clarity.

It would be great to see a real plot line and story that actually IS connected to things in-game.

Yup.

So many aborted storylines. So many storylines which, ultimately culminates in a fairly pointless conflict CG. Just one of those storylines actually leading to something interesting in game would be a welcome change.

That asteroid which blew up down below the Pleiades? Even just a wreckage site in the system would've been nice.

Wreaken Industries operating in the Col 70 sector? Where's the permit when you get allied to them allowing access to maybe one or two system in Col 70 with an interesting facility or two to check out.

Just little things like this...

I'm wondering if there is an in joke I'm not privy to? Do these articles mean something to anyone?
I'm pretty sure that there's no in joke in the sense of "you need to know something specific and either non-public or obscure to get it". There may also be an in joke - how would I know? - but the broad meaning of the three Olav Redcourt articles seems fairly clear to me.

Part of me wondered if it was a reference to Drew Wagar and the Premonition thing
I'd read this particular article as primarily a reference to a few rather more recent events - but you're right that the Olav Redcourt storyline as a whole could be seen as a commentary on aspects of the Premonition storyline and the differences in storytelling between 2.x and 3.x

Personally the Redcourt articles are my favourite bits of Galnet - they provide important information *and* it's guaranteed to be amusing watching the reaction threads.

Those articles about Olav Redcour are pretty much ok. Those things bring life to the galaxy, even if they're not related to any actual gameplay, although I wouldn't be so sure it will not be at some point.

This article was worthless though:

Who won? Not that I care, but can you imagine any RL news lacking any information about the victor? it looks like it's taboo to mention it, or it's in poor taste, because it might hurt other side feelings.

Probably a player cg. FD gives you a narrow left and right of arc about what you can say in relation to those

I assume the issue here is that the articles have to be prepared some time in advance for translations and queued up so that they can go live as soon as the CG ends, and therefore don't have time to have the winner mentioned.

It's I guess slightly better to avoid mentioning who won than to go "Dewey beats Truman" by making a guess on the early trend ... but this does seem to be a significant weakness of the competitive CG format at the moment. It would be better I think to have the "CG completed" articles coming a day later but with the actual results added, in this case.

That's pretty good explanation why it's so generic, although I suspect it wouldn't be a problem to simply record two versions of last sentence : version1/version2 "won the war" and just edit it accordingly before releasing the news.

Although perhaps the Asteroid that blew up was a reference to the new mining developments.

At the time I seem to recall thinking Hafnium was finally going to have a use in game.
