Asp Explorer: Shields and Power Distributors

Simple question. What do you recommend for Asp (E) in terms of shields and PD. Explorer build obviously. I have no interest in exploring with weapons.
Currently running with 5D shields and a 3D PD. I can increase jump range considerably if I go 3D shields. Is this a bad idea? What are you guys running with.
I know this has been asked before but I can't find the thread.

Running with a 3A shield which really just helps with patchy landings...why anyone would want to run with a big heavy shield is beyond me because yer never actually gonna need it...and it's heavy ^^

Maybe i am in the minority in this but i think 3D shields means just a few pulse laser hits + 1 missile and youre dead when returning to the bubble. Take at least 5D shields and if you can live with it add one 0A booster. Makes landings more convenient too :) In my opinion the Asp is not in need to be stripped down for range :)

no need, at returning you go into private mode so that you don't meet up with players. for landing the 3D works very well with 4pips in sys, a very small little bit of flight-skill is needed xD
5D shields are too heavy, boosters need too much energy what means, you need a greater powerplant.....again range decrease.
it's for exploring, not multipurpose or combat

additional:
If you are not wanted, don't have cargo and don't fly through powerplay systems, you barely have to fear any interdiction^^

Especially not if you mod your FSD...

5D shield is less weight, less power, and more MJ than 3A shield ;-)

i take a 5D, because i'm terrible at landing. i'm not really afraid when returning over a safe harbour/ high sec system at the edge of the bubble, to reoutfit an AspE bubbleready.

You might be comparing to a 4A, then. A 3A is 3T lighter than a 5D..

Solo doesnt exclude npcs. And they can (not often, but murphys law) interdict you w/o being pledged, without cargo and even on low combat ranks. Yeah you can still do total stripped down loadouts but i wouldnt dare to lose months of data to a nasty viper, which shoots 3d shields in a heartbeat and disables thrusters with a single missile on an undefended sitting duck loadout (because you would also use small thrusters to save range, right?). Thats just my thought, but i was interdicted on return pre 2.1 and i survived due to point defense, so i learned a lesson which i dont want to learn again :) I only use class A shields now for exploring because i think survivability is superior to max range. Asps can still have more than 40 Ly with a decent loadout

Hmm I stand corrected then...honestly didn't know that. Safe harbour ain't really the issue anyway, got a nice entry station that's less than 50ls from the primary star and it's the only orbital station in the system...very remote and nicely ignored by just about everyone. I'm on my way back in after losing my SRV, so shall take a closer look as I get further into the bubble, although the original plan was simply to replace the SRV and repair a busted hull and then do a 180 and head straight back out again ^^

This is why i said a little bit small flight-skill is needed. In an ASP you can mostly avoid interdictions. If not submit before loosing control and with the 3d PD you can still boost away. Besides the non-mission NPC's massage you long before interdiction. In this time you can jump away, log out, drop from supercruise etc etc ^^ Or you buy the Anaconda. Will be hard for NPC's to masslock her.

I am pleased this has generated discussion. I am an experienced player and cannot get my head around the best fit for shields on Asp (E). (And thrusters as well, currently running with 5D thrusters too).

CMDR Newman is correct I have a grade 5 modded fsd which currently gives me a whopping 47ly with 3d pd 3d shield and 5d thrusters. I just dont want to lose that sweet range:)

Your input is appreciated, please continue:)

Nah .. 3D is all you need. Park your explorer at a system that is on the edge of the bubble, with a short trip to the station so when you go exploring the first jump is to uninhabited space. Return to here, pick up your more bubble suited ship. Or get yourself an escort on return

I wonder if I could ask, are ye stripping out the hull bulkheads to get that range? I got lvl2 engineer mods on a 5A fsd and thought I was actually doin ok with 32ly, although I have since come to rethink a few things. Would stripping down to get that range not make it paper thin?

I never did understand why players think more jump range is a good thing , the next system I go to is usually under 10ly away while I'm out exploring .
I only see jump range as a means of getting somewhere fast , not for casually drifting round the galaxy visiting systems.
I got A5 shields and distributor ,I am armed and still have a 30ly jump that I seldom really use lol.

If you include Engineering mods, then Enhanced, Low-power shields give you a reduction in mass, although I've not modded a class 3D shield to see if it can still 'fit' the Asp Explorer. I'm not sure if there are any distributor mods that reduce its mass but an engine-focused distributor mod might allow you to boost with something lighter than a 3D (although, as stated above, the range difference is small). An overcharged power plant might allow you to use a more lightweight power plant as well - however it starts to get difficult to plan your builds without knowing how much power everything will use/supply.
.
For DWE I used 3D shields (and 5D thrusters iirc but I've lost my screenshots to be sure) and that was fine. I'm not sure how I would have fared had I been interdicted upon my return but I docked somewhere on the edge of the bubble with a station <10ls from the jump-in point and without passing through any inhabited systems getting there, to minimise the risk. With all the warnings about 'Winter is coming', my Asp now has a combat-explorer loadout with the best shields and thrusters I can fit (modded also), so I hope to be able to escape from anything. Whether I'll actually need to is another matter...

Depends on where ye are...some systems are actually fairly isolated and may need a long range to get to...that and it's like driving a powerful car...just cos ye have it doesn't mean ye have to use it all the time, but it's damned nice to have in reserve for when ye need it ^^
