Watch dogs was downgraded to match console version...its weird, i remember i did not buy because of that, and it was one of my must have before they downgraded it.

I really hope its not the case with Elite Dangerous, i love space and inmersion...I can only expect it to look better.

Watch Dogs was released on PC, XBOX and Playstation at the same time!

We can park it here until we get an update from FDev or we can let people ramble on?
Entirely up to you, it's your thread ;)

A lot of people were involved in this thread...I don't think it is fair for me to make that decision. People can continue to talk...it's all good. :)

Cool. No worries

You know, what I would love to see at some point in a future; is the size/shape/structure of the asteroids proceduraly generated too.

Maybe around the time we get the Asteroid bases ;) Though I hope we get them sooner than I can see this happening :D

This would be great. There is so much gameplay potential within the ring systems. Especially that they make up such a significant amount of areas within the game.

Yes please, there is a small sequence in on of the trailers of about a dozen ships mining one asteroid, that would be so amazing, the asteroids in the game so far seem a bit too small for that kind of activity. Also, much thicker belts, something I can get lost in.

Very pleased that FD are looking into this, I never had any issues in the ring systems and really miss the astonishing views in some of them. After horizon my laptop was not abel to get satisfactory FPS on the planets, so I had to get my main game PC up and running again. So after a lot of lobbing in the realm of Miss Lysander (everything outside my man cave) I finally received permission to go ahead and refurbish my rig. Final piece will arrive end of this month and then I can finally play ED as intended.

So to answer the original question of the OP. Yes, there is hope, it's just going to take some time.
It took some time to identify the root cause of the issues and it will take some time to implement a better solution.

So now that logic and rational thought has prevailed, can we close the thread now? :) :p

I don't know if it will "ever" be fixed. One of the issues is that the Cobra engine isn't up to the task. It makes poor use of compute resources and RAM, yet it doesn't perform very well. Never had issues in Asteroid fields, but the stutter inside stations is very much annoying for example. Or the route calculations.

It will take quite an effort to make the engine both smooth and performant. CIG put a lot of effort into refurbishing the CryEngine, and it shines well over the Cobra - offering superior performance and graphics on the same hardware.

Well, lets just say that you are not correct, and this is not the place to discuss CE over the Cobra Engine.

I'm not really sure if I'm buying that response; I literally never had issues with the game performance wise pre-release, nor did I see tons of others complaining about performance in asteroid fields. However, I'm not a FDev developer, so you really only have their word to go on in this situation.

MS: You want your game on XB1? Reduce your ring quality on PC!!!
FD: Uh......OK!

Seriously? That's some NeoGaf style nonsense right there.

First of all, thanks for your rendition. It was very moving.

Secondly, things like that happened before with other games, there's even a term for it. Graphical/Visual parity, look it up. It's more nuanced, they are probably many items and bargaining chips. It's business negotiations, remember the whole deal with CQC release dates and 'limited exclusivity' on XBox?

And finally, the most prosaic explanation - XB1 doesn't support the necessary features or it causes too much of a performance drop. And FDEV decided that rather than spending resources maintaining it for 2 (3 with mac) platforms they would keep codebase as unified as possible. Features that XB1 or Mac doesn't support well are getting removed or reworked.

"Visual Consistency" is FDs version of that Phrase.....it is mentioned several times in this thread.
.
While we're at it.......When I first played ED, I can't remember the interior of the station popping in to view.......yet in later versions it was very noticeable indeed. Was just a black hole up to a point when the whole landing bay area gets loaded and as you are generally lined up on the slot by this time, it was really jarring.......did they ever fix that? (Not played in a while) That one really surprised me as the fix would seem so trivial..I would have thought even a basic plane with an emissive texture/picture of the landing bay, would have been a better LOD than just ....nothing/darkness that pops in to light?.......

The "graphical parity" argument doesn't ring true. Parity would be with the lowest common denominator right? The comparative specs for an XBox one are significantly above the minimum requirements for this game. It isn't anywhere close.

In the examples you're thinking of it happens when a title is developed with the console and PC port at the same time. Titles like The Witcher were developed for two console platforms with the PC version being developed alongside it and there were statements from the developers to confirm that. There was controversy because the Witcher (and Watchdogs) were demonstrated at trade shows using high end PCs showing off a small portion of an unfinished title using settings that weren't used to deliver the final product. The developers having not used them when it came to putting the final product onto the millions of variations of real world video cards and CPU's and not wanting to support them or spend the time implementing them in the rest of the game.

That doesn't match the situation with ED. The game was already delivered to PC platforms with the XBox port developed and released much later in the year. There is little reason for Frontier to downgrade the existing PC version to remain in parity to a specific port. Arguments that suggest there is make very weird assumptions about the way video games are developed IMHO

Just throwing the words 'graphical parity' doesn't provide any logical explanation to why someone would want to do that when porting an existing PC game.

There are still some nice looking rings out there. Here is the Beta-1 Tucanae 2 Ring with a beautiful star shining behind it.

That's the only angle you can take a shot like that. Look elsewhere away from that star and its bloom affect, and you will see no dust, and mismatched color low poly background 'roids. Rest of the ring still looks pretty bad.

I simply gave up on rings. Used to spend hours there practicing FA off and just flying around snapping pics. Now they are just ugly. Such a shame.
