Attacked & destroyed in SOLO MODE

Hi All Tonight I was attacked and destroyed in SOLO MODE by a Thargoid whilst blind in Analysis mode scanning in Arietis Sector VO-R b4-.2. How is this possible? I thought you were not able to meet other players in this mode? The previous 3 nights when in open play the same happened once whilst in FSD jump once in super cruise and once whilst scanning. Are Thargoids supposed to be able to attack you in silent mode? I put this down to being in the wrong place at wrong time. Thats why I went in solo mode. This is putting me of playing ED, since I'm wasting my time. Are there any safer areas to play both in solo mode and open play.

You were in a warzone, so yep, wrong place wrong time. The galaxy map has a thargoid war mode and there’s a warning before a jump to a thargoid system.

It’s a bit confusing, especially for explorers, but the FSS and menus don’t stop the game, and solo mode doesn’t remove combat.

It’s easy to think it does, because unless you’re carrying cargo, pirates probably won’t interdict you and even if they do, they will just ignore you if you submit. You can even drop into the middle of most fights (eg nav beacons, res zones) without being attacked.

With the war, Thargoids now default to hostile in lots of places, so if there’s thargoid activity, you need to be very wary.

Let me go through that one by one
I was attacked and destroyed in SOLO MODE
Can happen - the only encounters you can avoid when going solo are other players...
by a Thargoid
...and those never are players. They're just another class of NPCs
in Arietis Sector VO-R b4-.2
which definitely is in the Thargoid conflict area.
How is this possible?
So far, you entered a warzone and were attacked (and destroyed) by an enemy ship.

You didn't - like I wrote above, you encountered an NPC. Non-human NPC, and hostile to humans (in this area).

If you mean silent running - as long as they got close enough, sure. Going cold just makes it harder for them to get a fix on you.

Playing a game is usually considered wasting time :)

Sure. For starters, any place outside of the Thargoid conflict area at the south side of the Bubble. For a really quiet place, you could try the Boreas, Ishtar or Zephyrus regions of the Galaxy - just about 20 kly North-West from Sgr A*.

If switch to white knighting if there was a chance to fly a thargoid and take part in the thargoid war.

(i know i'll be ignored by dozens after this post but it was worth it).

ps. If you get killed by an npc pilot in solo, its name is displayed on the death screen just like what i imagine happens for real players. Confused me a few times.

What made you think you couldn't be attacked by anything in solo mode?

Solo mode only prevents other players from instancing with you so you can play on your own. It does not stop any other elements of the game i.e. NPC's thargoids etc from roaming about doing what they do.

In short solo is not meant to be and has never been "Elite Peaceful".

Hi Karrde I dont know what you mean by white knighting. What does npc mean. Sorry I'm thick

Hi St0mFury Dont know

NPC = non-player-character i.e. not other players, just part of the game software.

If you are jumping to a system which has "Thargoid Invasion" or "Thargoid Alert" as the status (or systems owned by Thargoids), you may be hyperdicted/inderdicted by NPC Thargoids who will immediately attack. But these systems are only a tiny number compared to the 400 billion in the game.

In other systems you may get interdicted by NPC pirates, but as long as you have nothing in your cargo hold they'll generally just fly away again.

In Solo mode you will only meet NPCs. In Open you'd also meet other players, who will act according to their nature....

That was sarcasm...
Dont DO it since Shinrarta is known to be a gankers paradise praying on noobs that just unlocked Shinrarta and get there in Open in their shininy large ships, only to be sent to the rebuy screen before even knowing what happened.
Hi Northpin Thanks for heads up

No problem. When you hit "Hyperspace Jump" you get a little display at the top of the screen with some details about the target system's state - as long as this doesn't mention "Thargoid Controlled/Alert/Invasion" you generally shouldn't get destroyed out of hand in Solo. If it does mention Thargoid then maybe cancel the jump :)

If you are comfortable with the Galaxy map, I think you could also configure your route plotting to exclude Thargoidy systems.
