Automatic speed control in Supercruise is bad?

Mate, I could give you examples of complex automation on multi million $ aircraft that does things that 'Seem like nonsense' The Autothrottle logic does some crazy things on certain Boeings. Bottom line it was programmed to do a job, if used correctly if carries out the intended function.

But this isn't real life. :p It's a game. In real-life we value safety to the extremes when it comes to commercial planes (especially the larger ones). But, again, this isn't RL, and so these mechanics do little more than waste our time. If I want semi-realism I'll play Rogue System or Flight Simulator X...

...actually, on reflection, the MS FSX (Steam edition) is rarely realistic... :p

Hi there!

EDIT: Just to be clear, I know perfectly how to avoid the "Loop of shame" by hitting the 75% throttle bind. It seems, that too many people think this is the problem.

So, when in supercruise aproaching a targeted signal source, why is it that if I let myself speed up to the point that remaining arrival time is less that 6 seconds my ship is incapable of slowing down to the needed speed? It feels like the navigation system is just too stupid to slow down because if I change the target, the ship has no problem slowing down instantly. I can understand such behavior when near planets (gravity and all) but it makes no sense for signal sources.

Is there an explanation for this or is it really a bug/poorly implemented feature (no offence FDev ^^)?

You can see it in this video. I am at 0 throttle but the ship keeps speeding. As soon as I change my target, the ship stops and I can safely re-target the signal:

With this in mind, it is really possible to reach signal sources a lot faster than simply keeping the countdown at 0:06.

I don't know why this 6 second thing is a cutoff and it makes no sense that once you break that you lose the ability to slow down.

6 seconds (well actually 7s) is just the result of the programmed decel rate, nothing is documented. You don't lose the ability to slow down faster in that mode, you never had it in the first place, as long as that mode is engaged the automation will always try to achieve that fixed rate. The mode doesn't 'think' so to speak (it is simply programmed to maintain a rate for a smooth deceleration)

If you engage the mode when under 5's seconds, the automation can't maintain the programmed rate of declaration to get you within the safe drop speed (unless you get lucky with a gravity well) you have to take over manually.

5 seconds is the bare minimum, although you can be quick and tap the disengage button if you are fast enough.

Could the whole system be better? Yes a lot better. Does it work if used correctly? Most definitely.

just dropping by to say i hate SC

why a ship cant accelerate in coloration to its agility is a bit silly, all ships do the same speed, accelerate the same, stop the same... big room for development and diversity here, But while an anaconda laden with circa 500T behaves the same way in SC (in relation to acceleration / deceleration) to a ~230T asp scout or DBs with the SAME 4D thrusters.... hmmmm

the whole thing needs a QoL improvement and ships agility / weight should play a bigger role IMO

For an illustration of the effect the OP is referring to, see the first fifteen seconds of this video:

I regularly use a quick deselect then reselect of my destination to near instantly bleed off huge amounts of SC velocity when I slightly mistime my gravity breaking. That this is how SC travel works is silly.

Why is having a target perventing me from putting everything to deaccelerating?

Because the flight computer is a troll.

dont show them our current SC workarounds... jeez FD will be in with the nerf bat before you can say nerf! ;)

Imagine a Cutter... able to reach 100c/s in an instant regardless of where you are, but then you slow down for the next 99Ls... :D

That said, I'd like it if the ships had variety beyond turn rates in SC!

In Star Trek, ships can do it. Considering ED is almost 1000 years ahead, it should definitely be possible here.

This was a neat little wrinkle in the supercruise assist mechanics. An exploit if you like. Down To Earth Astronomy explaines it. But it is nerfed now. You used to be able to go full throttle in supercruise assist, into the blue at 5 secs out from destination and the supercruise assist would do you an emergency stop. So supercruise times were faster. Handy if you're a trader and make a lot of stops. But now, after the September update supercruise takes mandatory automatic control of your throttle. It keeps it in the blue at all times which probably makes your supercruise times longer now. So now I don't use it.

Errr, no - you can switch that off. But nice necro (y)

Not a necro anymore. The thread has started up again. So let's call it a lazarus. But seriously. How do you switch off automatic throttle control? When I know I will become a fan of the module again. I wonder how I switched it on😱

OK. I give up. I thought what you meant was that it was like turreted weapons where you can switch them to fixed. But no, there is no similar setting. If you switch SC off. That's it. You've switched if off. So please tell me what I am missing, because it is driving me to distraction.

Supercruise is still work in progress, just give them a few more years.
But it was great before the September update. I really liked it. Now as Turd Ferguson has pointed out, it actually takes longer to get you to your Supercruise destination because it keeps the throttle in the blue all the time. Whereas if you just do it manually, you just do the well known "full throttle till 7 secs out and then pull back to 75%". Sorry if I seem to be obsessing about this, but SC assist really did cut down on Supercruise time, especially if you are a trader, whilst making final approach more fun with emergency stop.

right panel -> Ship -> Flight Assistance -> Supercruise Assist set on Manual Throttle.
Enjoy fast braking at 4-5s mark.

Damn................Thank you so much. Never saw it. Woo Hoo. I'm back in reckless driver heaven now. Thank you so much. You have saved me many hours of unnecessary flying.
