Bacterium search a joke

certain types of bacteria are nearly impossible to find. even while standing on them, you have no chance recognizing them. it is getting even more ridiculous. in turret mode of the srv, you can see the patches clearly in a distinctive color like other patches you can find relatively easy from the sky during flying. but only having the turret aligned in an certain angle. is this a bug or are players getting intentionally treated like idiots? i have no problem finding something rare with a bit more time spent to be successful, sry but this is next level rubbish.

i did this for over half an hour. also changing entry spots from orbit. the range of the scanner is so small, that it is just a coincidence when you find one. the same goes to the srv turret method. who thought this kind of gameplay would be an engaging and motivating method of collecting data?

yes you can move on to another but you are wasting so much time before realizing that you need way to much time finding the appropriate bacteria. i get it, exploration and especially life form searching can be tedious from time to time, but this is a joke.

and no colonization hasnt been out yet

My approach for finding Bacterium is check if the atmosphere is neon, if it is don’t bother.

Select a small patch of blue on the bright side and arrange to arrive out of glide at one edge of the patch with a good clear run across it. The larger the patch the more places the stuff has to hide.
Keep a good look out while in the final descent from exiting glide they can sometimes show up clearer from height.
Fly across the patch at say 30-50m stopping every few hundred metres to spin around 360 degrees looking for differences and listening to the scanner.
If I get to the far side of the patch without finding anything move on to the next bio on the planet or the next planet/system.
If I get bored move on.

Did you know that the Sampling Tool has two functions? One of them is a ping to find nearby exobio...So if you're standing on it, you can find it even if you can't see it...

You may find this extremely recent thread interesting, with lots of discussion of how it might be better and also discussion on how to work with what you have.

But the TL;DR is:
the ship can detect it
the SRV can detect it
and you can ping for it using the suit
and in the real world sometimes things are a dark thing on a dark background
bacteria is worth very little compared to literally dozens of other things to collect, so skip it if you don't like it

Personal observations:
  • bacteria hunt worth only if we have FF on a planet and 3-rd spot of something like Stratum Tectonicas has bacteria spot nearby.
  • ship with decent lights and good view is required. Mandalay is perfect for it.
  • turning on Night Vision and Ship Lights simultaneously allow to find bacteria without problem since rocks, ground, Stratum and bacterias are all having very distinctive different light reflective properties.
  • I would not refuse to have a dedicated UV lights for such occasions, but what we already have works (fo me, YMMV) pretty much OK.

Bacteria are just textures: they have no 3d element. Catch the angle just right and they can phase between their true colour and black. This is really useful on red or darker planets with the more translucent and widely-spaced specimens. This method works from your ship or through the remote camera and rarely fails.
