General / Off-Topic Best & Worst Sci Fi Movie Ever

I seem to remember a book by Douglas Hill (I think) on a similar bent called Alien Citadel. The typical type of aliens have wiped out humanity down to a last few and they have reverted to a primitive state and one 'outcast' becomes the hero and saves the world (Very L Ron Hubbard - Battlefield Earth - WORST SCIFI MOVIE EVER!!!).

Ah Battlefield Earth truly a bad scifi film,But I would like to present another film for the forums consideration.I give you the "HUMANOID" http://www.golobthehumanoid.com/ staring Richard Kiel.this little beauty makes even starcrash look good.:D

Haha that looks awesomely bad :D It even looks like they have stolen shots from Star Wars!

The film is even worse in motion it just has to be seen to be believed, and that robot dog what were they somkeing when they came up with that idea?.:D

More great pic there steve, Love that low tec rocket powered looking ship pic called rendezvous. Be great to see something simular in Elite4 where there was a real difference in the technology levels between the empires.

I know that our opinions on the worst film ever is nothing to do with those great pictures, but,
I would like to nominate for worst Sci Fi film ever - "Plan 9 From Outer Space". The story of it is told in the Tim Burton film "Ed Wood" starring Johnny Depp.
Ed Wood jr is regarded as THE worst film maker ever.

The above quotes were posted in the stunning sci fi pictures thread, but I felt that they were about a completely different subject so I thought maybe we'd all want to continue that subject here (if i'm wrong this thread will just fade and die !).

Nice one Alien,Plan9 From Outer Space is one of the all time great howlers.:D

Believe it or not, i've not seen Plan 9 From Outer Space. I've only seen what Tim Burton re-created of it in Ed Wood.

But it is regarded as one of the worst sci fi films ever.

Well I'd have to stick to my initial call of Battlefield Earth being a monumental flop, more so because of the huge budget that went into it.

My personal fav best Scifi movie is Strange Days however my call on the best of all time? I think I would have to go with Empire Strikes Back - Just brilliant.

Adding my two-pennyworth!
I'd agree that the original Star Wars Trilogy are up there with the best, and the recent trilogy, not the worst, but the most disappointing. As a Trekkie I'd have to put in a vote for "First Contact" as the best Star Trek film.
More generally, although there are the awful 50's SF films, does anyone else feel that recent offerings (War of the Worlds, Independence day, Lost in Space and many others) have been pretty disappointing: surprising, given that current CGI should make them so brilliant. None of them seem to use the artwork you have come across Steve, and none as epic as the (admittedly tedious in places) 2001: ok, I'm biased on that because of associating the Blue Danube with docking in Elite!
Anyone agree? Or am I getting a Grumpy Old Man?

If I'm being honest I really struggled with 2001. It was just a little too slow.

Just quietly I quite liked Indipendance Day and I shed a little tear in Armageddon :D They were both entirely shamless for what they were and didn't take themselves too seriously. I like that in a movie. I quite enjoyed the Star Trek movies but the original ones I found were much more engaging than the TNG ones. They were a really decent departure from the TV series where the TNG ones felt like extra length TV episodes.

But...the US president flying, and alien technology that was Microsoft-compatible so it could be disabled by a computer virus?!?
I know what you mean though, sometimes not-too-deep fun is good. And the actors: love Jeff Goldblum in the Fly, Will Smith in I am Legend, Men in Black and I Robot, and of course Brent Spiner as Data (we're back to Asimov and Star Trek again!)

Actually there is a book I'd like to see as a movie - Caves of Steel by Asimov.

A classic! The Foundation series probably wouldn't film well, but I remember the sense of shock reading it as a boy when he revealed the identity of the Mule.
Maybe SF doesn't translate so well, it's too big, too much about "what if..."
The ones that work engage you in the lives of individuals.
We haven't mentioned the Alien series or ET which personally I don't feel is one of the greatest films of all time, despite polls saying otherwise.
And I take your point on the Star Trek films, though like 2001 the pacing is very slow. But the scene where Spock dies...

More so because the Foundation series had only tenuous continuity however some of them were excellent reads. Alien and Aliens were brilliant and yet another example of a sequel being as good as, if not better than, the original. Alien 3 the directors cut was actually quite good as well but the final in the series was weak.

LOL @ Spock dying - ever so slightly dragged on :D

LOL where do you dredge this stuff up :D That was amazingly bad!

Iam a sci-fi nutter.:D

I would now like to present,to the forum some of my all time fav films.Dark Star from 1974 http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=gSccwmmrS5A&feature=related John Carpenter first feature film.(most people will love it or hate it). tenuous link time, for few more of my fav films.Dan O'bannon who plays pinback and co wrote the film, would go on to write the screen play for Alien http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0oYNvmNZP2o which was directed by ridley scott who also directed Blade Runner.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lW0F1sccqk Syd Mead http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syd_Mead who did the industrial design.Would design the Leonov from 2010 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mHb2ygiLOw and the Sulaco from aliens http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRKn-42V4OI " Bygod I could bore for britian!":D

As for worst film. "Battlefield Earth" is #1. What they did to my most favourite book was criminal.

As for best sci-fi film, I could not choose because I have a lot of favourites. Some movies that I'll mention are:

"Bicentennial Man" based on Asimov's short story. Which I think Robin Williams did a good job in. I think many people were expecting his stand up comedy, they did not take him for a serious actor and thus the movie was pannned.

"Blade Runner" without the voice over and the happy ending!

"Soylent Green" hits real close to home. (Re: Avian flu, mad-cow disease, and other food borne plagues coming to a grocery store near you  )

If you are thinking of making a book into a movie, I'd like to see "Enders Game" would be great. Hmmm.... looking around I see via Wikipedia, that it might be happening.

.....with you on Bladerunner.:) Again, it's interesting that it came out before CGI may special effects so easy, so maybe a concentration on plot, atmosphere and character is what makes it so great (as !st Star Wars trilogy vs 2nd). Ridley Scott is a great director. Has Sci-fi dipped in popularity and been replaced by Fantasy to some extent, in the way that it took over from westerns previously?

And as an aside, I read that both Asimov's Foundation and the original Star Wars are both based on the Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire, maybe why they both work so well as epic dramas.
