Beta 3.9 oculus specific fixes

Seems very good in extended for me. Excuse my noobness, why do some play in Direct? What advantage 'should' it have over extended?

Cheers
When Oculus gets it working properly, it should offer lower latency (I did notice a slight improvement in Tuscany before 0.4.3).
I still stubbornly try it with each new demo, only to be disappointed. Then I switch back to extended where it always works.

I got hours at work before I can go home and try it <sigh>.
Does the system map still plant your head in the middle of the star?

Nope, but then it did not do that in 3.05 either

Sadly I'm still getting frames judder while in super cruiser in Open Play when there are CMDs arround me, At this point i guess I will be playing solo mode until they fix it.
Any suggestions that anyone can give me to improve the judder ?
My biggest mistake was to buy a Amd card. :((
My system spec..
i7 4790K@ 4.0Ghz
8Gb ddr3 @ 2400ghz
amd r9 290x
ssd hardrive.

Dont know what ur problem is with the card, it's on par with 970. Sure it's a bit hot, but it's winter anyway ..

Can you run direct mode ? And if yes - with what drivers.

I can not seem to get mine to work. In direct mode it is not being seen nor in extended mode. Also the 3D option for Oculus Rift seems to have gone away - although this could be because of the not recognized issue.

Any ideas?

I'm stuck with a DK2 rift that just won't work with ED too. 472 bucks wasted! :-( I have an Nvidia 780ti fitted which works with the rift and other games - just not ED

Actually I have a few problems with the card, one of them you already mentioned, it work very hot, there is no support for a basic feature like downsampling when nvidia has that for years. Driver support is horrible, you get 30 beta driver every week and 1 official driver every 7 month.
About direct mode on the DK2 yes I can run it , but as everyone else you are unable to make it work at 75hz and the frames judder make it imposible to play.
Im using lates amd beta driver 14.11.2

hi

does this still work on 4.2 or do you have to update? 4.3 seems hit and miss for a lot of stuff

also if you ARE on 4.3 I read somewhere NOT to disable aero any more as it is needed for performance. strange but there you go.

i was not suggesting you uninstall if you were already on 4.3...... .

but many of us have been holding off the upgrade from 4.2 to 4.3 as many apps do not work well in 4.3, so i was curious if I was finally going to have to make the jump to the new drivers.

Downsampling with that card will anyway perform bad, it does pretty much on all configs.
I agree that AMD have been quiet on the VR front. I'd like VR optimizations and tweaks in their drivers really soon. But apart from that they have solid hardware and work on the mainstream games pretty good.
I crash on startup on direct but it's because of my old drivers. I don't wanna change them though since they are really stable in extended mode. So every major release I ask ppl how direct mode works :)
Anyway I'd strongly advise you to stick with your card (as I will to my two 290s) until CV1 comes out, then we'll make our picks :)

The Direct Mode problem is clearly that the rift is trying to keep in sync with the refresh rate of your primary monitor. I think Frontier must be using 75hz monitors and don't realise the problem. If you have a 60hz primary then you are going to get very juddery framerate in Direct Mode in the Rift.

I set my monitor to 75hz before starting up ED and it still runs at 60hz...

I have a GTX Titan and in extended mode I need to set everything to LOW setting, and turn off blur, otherwise it is a smearing mess when I move my head. GPU usage is close to 90-95%, and hits 99% for any settings above LOW. Which is a bit disappointing since I run every other game in Ultra with this card...

For Direct Mode, I've ticketed the following today:

Using the Oculus DK2 in Direct Mode with a GTX Titan, the following happens:

- The game appears on the Primary Monitor and on the Oculus. They are mirrored. In my case I have the monitor set for 75 Hz at 2560x1440, and have tried the game fullscreen and in windowed mode at this resolution or 1920x1080 @ 75 Hz.

- The Main Menu renders at 75 fps (see screenshot)

- When entering the game, it starts rendering at 37.5 fps (exactly half). It seems to be capped at that level. In the Oculus, there is a lot of smearing happening when I turn my head (low persistence not enabled?)

- GPU usage is at 45%-50%

I have tried the various in-game settings without success. I have also tried setting the following parameters in the NVIDIA control panel to no avail:

- VR pre-rendered frames to Application-controlled
- Triple buffering
- Vertical Sync override
- Preferred refresh rate

Well, I guess there wasn't much focus on Oculus Rift improvements with 3.9 :( not much changed for me... Still getting Judder in space stations, asteroid fields, and entering/exiting SC or SC'ing near planets... and the Galaxy map is still unusable!!! Sound also seems to cut out every once and a while now too? I am running an I5 4670K, EVGA GTX780, 8gb on a MSI z87 gaming MOBO with a DK2. I really hope this gets sorted out before the official launch.... The game is playable, but still seems like it has a ways to go for perfect Oculus Rift support!!!! I can dismiss some of the other issues, but judder kills the experience for us Rifters :(

I am still on 4.2 and it runs fine. Just hard to read the text. Will try cranking the brightness up a bit since that seems to have helped others.

Sound cuts out here too but only seems to happen when using the Rift. Maybe every 5 minutes or so, sound just stops for a couple seconds then kicks on again. As if it stops, rewinds a couple of seconds, and starts playing again (i.e. looping). Been having that since beta 3.05.

Impressed so far. On a single GTX 680 (since my GTX980 blewup :() and FX8350, very stable in Extended - not seeing the sharp framerate losses I experienced in Beta w3.0x. Direct works, but badly - still significant stuttering/freezes, still have the framerate update blur between left and right eye. DSR doesn't appear to work as well as it did but 2560x1440 supersampling appears sharper and text is better defined, not suffering performance losses so I'm happy.

Getting a new PC next week to celebrate Gamma, i7 4790K and GTX 970 2 way SLI, so hopefully I'll be able to really crank up the settings. :)

Just to confirm the following definitions:

- Judder: when the view jumps around randomly or shakes even though you are not moving your head.
- Smear / Blur: When you move your head, the image is "doubled" as if the eyes aren't in sync or there is something called "persistence" at play
- EDIT: Chromatic aberration: When you see red/green/blue separation

Correct?
