Game Discussions Bethesda Softworks Starfield Space RPG

A shade over 160 Hours played, Level 52 and just got my second power, I happened to land on an planet where there was one ..... Still flying my slightly modified Star Eagle which I am loving, not built a ship myself yet, but I am sure I will get to that at some point.

Just picked up a MagSniper that natively does 400+ damage, modded it goes above 500. Other than that been using a heavily modded Hard Target and heavily modded Grendel , I tend to swap them out and re-mod them when I find ones with better damage.

I hear the shield skill tree can bug out, which probably happened with the starter ship in my previous playthrough. It wouldn't update better shield ratings with the according bonus. Allegedly no workaround known apart from console commands.

I have Shield Systems L1 skill, and looks like it works for me: My new Orca's shield strength is 20% higher than what ship dealer's information says. Or is the bug such that the shield is actually weaker than the reported strength?

It could happen that you do not get any of your % increase or even have a negative percentage.

I have a ship with 1600 shield. With my shield systems at rank 4 (+60%) and one crewmember (+20%) I should have 2880 (+ 80%). It happend to me that I only had 960 shield. I don't know how or when it happend but it's pretty annoying. Now I ever so often check my shield strength which did me no good. I was just flying around and scanning planets and boom when I checked next the shield was down from 2880 to 1600 and of course all my autosaves and the quicksave do have the same lower shield. I have to revert back to my last exit save which means around 5 hour of gameplay lost. I think I'll take a break.

/edit: The only thing happening was a level up while I was in the map scanning planets. Maybe I'll test out if that caused the bug.

You say "unique", you do realise that Stroud is identical with slightly different lighting?
Take another look at the extra "greeble", airvents, grab bars, and lighted moulding that runs along the aisle ceiling in the Stroud Workshop and above the central table in the Stroud Science Labs. Changes the vibe a bit.

And yea the lighting differences set different moods. The under-cabinet task lighting above the left/right work tables in the Deimos Science Lab in particular look good to me. These lights don't exist at all in the Stroud Science Lab.

But each have their own appeal.

So I made a new character, because of course I did. I was fooling around on some planet and ran into a robot-controlled base I'd never seen before. I got past the first few robots and entered a building. It's the first time I've seen skeletons anywhere.

Looking around, I found various notes and computer emails and such that told a very creepy story. The folks at this base had discovered some kind of valuable ore combination, and were expecting to become very rich from it. But then the boss man disappeared into the command tower and his robots started patrolling , and keeping everyone out of the tower. So the workers feared that the boss had gone insane, and they feared for their lives. They were preparing to leave when the robots suddenly attacked.

I fought my way up to the top of the tower, past the robots and turrets, expecting to find a mad man at the top. Instead, I found some notes about how he was creating a new AI to handle the ore combination properly. Then later, I found notes about how the AI went rogue, and locked him in the tower. I found the computer where he made the AI, but it wasn't operational any more.

Freaky stuff. I enjoyed the combat, though. I'm trying to use only found weapons at the moment -- it makes things more interesting.

As I left the place a ship landed nearby and I was able to steal it and turn it into this. It's pretty nice, actually.

I didn't read it all but even though it's not part of the main story line, spoilers for the actual details would be appreciated :D

This has been my thinking in general, in that it looks amazing and fun to design and "live in" a custom spaceship, but if that spaceship just sits on the ground all the time, then I fail to see the point. Sure, you fly your spaceship in space, but is there any other gameplay in space tied to your ship's design and interiors? Is there a damage model and associated gameplay, for example? Is there a "repel borders" scenario where your ship is boarded and you a gunfight in your custom-crafted rooms and hallways? How does ship design affect the flight model?

Coming from Space Engineers, I have high expectations for the gameplay that involves my spaceship, where every design choice matters, and where I can set my ship on autopilot while it flies a few thousand feet above a planet's surface and walk around and enjoy the views from various windows and portholes, etc. Not that designing and walking around a ship in Starfield wouldn't be fun for me, but I want it to be more than just a mobile base. Maybe it is, and I'm missing something.
I don't know about repelling boarders. It might be possible as a mission. But boarding pirates' ships and battling them within their own ships to get to the pilot's seat is a lot of fun. And my favourite ship at the moment is one that I'd stolen

Just be sure to up your piloting skills before you do it. The first time I did it I was told I didn't have the necessary skill to hijack the ship

Ahh that one, yeah I've been there, it was interesting for about 10 min then it all fizzled out in the sand, I was expecting something more I guess.
one of the most intense space mission I've done was in CoD infinity wars of all games, where you have to safe some scientists located on an asteroid, that was a good mission, and for some reason I expected BGS to at least make something interesting in space than just copy paste missions.

I seemed to work when I got another ship, but my starter ship just would accept the skill and/or crew boni properly. I think it even downgraded the rated shield power.

Is my first impression correct that space combat is more arcade-style? At least the feeling was very disappointing to me, more like NMS. Also the HUD not being integrated in the actual terminal ... it is back to Elite for some serious space combat (not to mention deep space exploration, ofc) , is it not?

Calling all experienced pilots: I have switched to an EM weapons (can't see right now, it's lasers, should I be using different?) to take down engines using targeting, but every time I end up blowing the ships up.

Can anyone recommend the best A-class weapons to take down engines, in order to board? I have the skill, I just think I am using the wrong EM type.

Correct. It's no where near the same as Elite. If you want movie-style (especially when using VR) combat Elite AFAIK is in the top 1 of all combat space games (never played NMS or X-series, so don't really know).

Apparently you can do some kind of FA-off but it's still not the same (not tried it but can't for a moment doubt it is not as finely tuned as ED).

The combat is a little different too - there was an old game called Freelancer (I think) where ships would come at you and then move away in your target of vision - rather than take advantage of being behind you. SF very much reminds me of that - they don't 'jink' and try and get on your tail. They come in at you then swerve away allowing you without trying to get on their tail.

That being said wait until modders get hold of Creation Engine next year and I think you'll see some mods that will address all these things.

X4 comes pretty darn close (including 6DoF and good FA-off), though I'll give Elite the win when it comes to small-ship dogfighting combat. X4 takes the win when it comes to large-scale epic battles between fleets of capital ships, regardless if I'm commanding one of those capital ships or jumping into my fighter/bomber to take out enemy fighters or subsystems on enemy capital ships.

I knew Starfield is an arcade game when it came to combat, but I didn't know it it's a kid's arcade game, LOL. But I'm sure it's still the most amazing game ever 🤪

Some EM have also a physical damage component. And check if you dont accidentally shoot other guns. EM is supposed to go through shields. EM is called "Suppressor" often. Check the stats left bottom in the ship builder if they have other damage properties.

There's an issue with the current version of Starfield that prevents random space encounters if you are not using the Frontier: https://help.bethesda.net/#en/answer/62939

So I decided to upgrade the Frontier as much as I could using only one rule, I will only use parts made by Nova Galactic. That means no Horizon weapon mounts and Taiyo equipment plates and since Nova Galactic is the only ship manufacturer that makes Grav drives, I have to use that too. Engines, reactor, weapons and cargo are all good since those are not made by Deimos, Stroud-Eklund, Tayio and Hopetech. I also wanted one hab of each type with the exception of 1x1 store room and companionway to prevent ladders, the only thing left of the original ship is the 2x1 Frontier hab and landing bay. Tour of the interior

Kept the classic laser, ballistic and missile configuration even though a full particle setup would be optimal.

I think for A class it's the Nullifier 1750
Deimos is probably your best bet for supplier.
